FREDERICK, MD - Nu Flow America, the world leader for in-place mechanical pipe system rehabilitation, has opened its newest office near Washington, D.C. This expansion was made as a result of the flourishing growth and demand of Nu Flow s unique services, as well as an abundance of previous work with government structures. This expansion was necessary because we have had a constant presence there for the past two years, said Nu Flow CEO Cameron Manners. We have acquired back-to-back million dollar projects with customers in the D.C. area, so establishing an office there only makes sense for our customers and us. This new office currently includes two salesmen and three project trucks for the technicians. The new regional manager of this Maryland office, Paul Eaves, who previously was a lead potable technician in Nu Flow s San Diego office, foresees a lot of sales and growth for his new office. I ve seen how successful Nu Flow has been in other locations and I knew that the Maryland and D.C. area would be just as successful, Eaves said. This is a prime market for us since we ve already done a lot of work here and the infrastructure is among the oldest in the country. Eaves said the D.C. office salesmen are currently focusing on providing our services to government buildings, commercial buildings, condominium complexes, apartment buildings, country clubs and casinos. NU FLOW LAUNCHES THE MI-T-CUTTER OSHAWA, ON - Nu Flow, a manufacturer, installer and distributer of cost-effective, green repipe alternatives and no-dig solutions, has launched the Mi-T-Cutter, designed to cut open lateral reinstatements from the inside, as opposed to the branch line. The Mi-T-Cutter from Nu Flow was constructed to fit in 4-6 lined pipe and used to cut open lateral reinstatements, trapped drain connections and cutting out hard debris in longer sections of drain lines. The Mi-T-Cutter is 32 long and is accompanied by three different cutting heads. The cutter itself has a bladder that locks it into place making it ideal for vertical pipe reinstatements. With a separate airline, the camera lens is kept free of debris for clear viewing on the 19 monitor. The camera holder is made to fit a Ridgid camera head and can be adjusted to any angle for optimal visibility and includes a 250-foot video coax so that you can view lateral and main views alternately on the monitor with the flip of a switch. Our Mi-T-Cutter is the ideal solution for cutting open lateral reinstates, said Nu Flow CEO Cameron Manners. With a 19 viewing screen and a camera head that can be positioned in any direction, you can see exactly what is going on in the pipe. 4 Case Study: San Diego I-8 Freeway Nu Flow continues to raise the bar in the pipe lining industry. Nu Flow s unique technology enabled the rehabilitation of an 8 electrical conduit cooling pipe system that runs beneath a busy San Diego interstate without any freeway closures or disruption to traffic. This extremely unique and challenging feat was accomplished by Nu Flow s innovative, Pull-in-Place technology, Nu Drain. Project: Rehabilitate a failing electrical conduit cooling system that runs beneath a busy interstate without disrupting traffic. Site: I-8 freeway in eastern San Diego County, near Alpine, California. System: Approximately 700 feet of PVC electrical conduit cooling water lines, 8 inches in diameter, which run about 30 feet underneath part of the I-8 freeway. Problem: The electrical conduit cooling water system experienced failures due to poor glue joints and structurally damaged sections. The customer did not want to shut down part of the interstate in order to rehabilitate the pipes. Circumvention: If the customer chose a traditional repair instead of Nu Drain, the customer would have experienced severe frustrations with the consequences of the work. An alternate fix would have been core drilling under the interstate to install a new pipe line. This process would include laying out new pipe lines and encasing them with concrete. If this alternative solution was chosen, the area could not ever be drilled into again, so this posed a great risk for the customer. This process would have taken longer than the Nu Drain solution and could have caused major disruption to drivers all risks that the customer did not want to take. Where life interacts with infrastructure. Pipe System Beneath Freeway Rehabilitated Without Disruption Interstate-8 is a major artery for the county of San Diego and we didn t disrupt it. There was no disruption to traffic flow what-so-ever. - Bill Turner, Regional Manager, Nu Flow Solution: The failing, underground pipes were successfully lined with Nu Drain and traffic was never interrupted. First, Nu Flow s highly skilled technicians created access points on both sides of the interstate, leaving the freeway s concrete completely intact. After the pipe system was cleaned, an epoxy-saturated felt liner was pulled from one access point to the other. An internal bladder was inflated, pressing the epoxy to the inside of the pipes. This patented process created a seamless, protective pipe within the host pipe that will prevent future failures. Nu Flow had the ideal solution for the customer because, as the world leader in rehabilitating mechanical pipe systems, we have the best long-term, no-dig solution. This job was completed during normal workday hours without any cars disturbed by our work lining pipes 30 feet underground. This unique job is a prime example of why Nu Flow s technology can be utilized to rehabilitate the mechanical pipe systems for any commercial, residential, industrial, municipal or federal company. Case Study: Downtown, 5-Story Library 5-Story Library Does Not Shut Its Doors For Pipe Repairs The staff of a historic, urban, public library can rest easy now that Nu Drain has been applied to its aged and failing sanitary drain system. After a series of leaks and costly damage to some books, this 5-story library knew it needed an effective, long-term pipe rehabilitation solution to prevent further damage and disruption. Project: Rehabilitate failing sanitary drain lines that are located in hard-to-access areas throughout a high-traffic, downtown library. Customer and Site: A 5-story, historic, public library, located in a heavily populated, urban area. This particular downtown library is part of a library system that serves more than a million residents and contains millions of books. System: Cast iron sanitary sewer lines that are 2", 3" and 4" in diameter. These pipes are around 60 years old and are located in ceilings, walls and under concrete slab. Problem: These sanitary pipes experienced leaks as a result of age, which prompted the customer to look for long-term solutions to prevent damage to the library s books and other documents. Since the drain pipe system is located throughout the library s walls, ceilings and floors, an in-situ pipe system repair seemed ideal. Circumvention: If the customer had chosen a traditional repipe repair, the ceilings, walls and slab would have been ripped apart in order to replace the failing pipes. This would have caused severe disruption to the library s normal operations and it would have been a timeconsuming, inconvenient and messy project. Solution: Nu Drain was used to rehabilitate the leaking sanitary lines and prevent failures from occurring in the future. Nu Flow s non-invasive, patented process was the best solution for the customer because the library remained open and the restrooms were available for use during our work. Nu Flow s Pull-in-Place liner was installed using existing access points, to reduce any disruption to the library structure, staff and visitors. This patented, in-place process preserved many structures within the library, which in turn saved the customer money, time and hassle. Along with those benefits, the library s drain system is now protected with Nu Drain, which is a long-term solution against leaks and other common failures for several mechanical pipe systems within all types of commercial, municipal and federal buildings. 5 p/n 583 v1 In order to prevent inevitable pipe system failures in the beautiful, beach-front Dorchester of Palm Beach condominium, the property s management decided to apply Nu Pipe to its aged, potable risers. Since the work is occurring before there are any pipe problems, the customer has the luxury to break up the job into three parts, which saves the condominium money and inconvenience. Project: Apply Nu Pipe to six of the potable risers in The Dorchester of Palm Beach condominium complex without causing any destruction. Customer and Site: The Dorchester of Palm Beach is a twobuilding, five-story condominium complex in Palm Beach, Florida. These luxurious condo units are placed right on the beach and surrounded by lush, manicured gardens. System: Copper potable risers that are 2 inches wide and around 40 years old. Nu Flow lined four of these risers in 2011, six in 2012 and will line the final 10 in These pipes are found throughout the walls of the condominium. Problem: This high-end, beach-front condominium has management that is very forward-thinking. So instead of waiting for something to happen to the aged, copper pipes, management decided to implement a long-term solution to prevent pipe leaks. Circumvention: If The Dorchester of Palm Beach would have waited for a pinhole leak to occur in its aged potable pipes, the leaking water could cause very expensive damage to the high-end units and the residents belongings inside. Also, a traditional repipe would require tearing up the walls from floor to ceiling inside the units and at least three months of work. Solution: Nu Flow had the ideal solution for the customer, and as a result, the customer is enthusiastically thrilled about our work. Management did not want to have to take out a loan for this pipe lining work, so Nu Flow created a flexible time schedule to work with the customer s budget. Where life interacts with infrastructure. So we worked with this customer s budget and since it wasn t an emergency, we broke it out over three years. During Nu Flow s work, there was zero destruction to the property, because the technicians utilized existing potable connections. There was also minimal disruption, since each potable riser was done one-at-a-time and technicians only needed to enter a few feet inside the condo units front doors in order to access a water heater connection. Downtime, resident displacement and reconstruc- tion are added concerns that should be addressed during the planning process. The cost to fix damaged pipes can be astronomical, especially when the pipes are under tiled floors or behind painted walls. Pipe systems are often forgotten until there is a prob- lem. Pinhole leaks, corrosion, low flow, root intrusion and infiltration are just some issues that building own- ers, property managers and engineers commonly run into. Like all tangible objects, pipe systems age and eventually need repairs, but the traditional process of digging up and replacing pipes has more disadvantages than benefits. However, there are technologies available that can be used as preventative measures against pipe failure. Many plumbing and mechanical companies are adding trenchless technologies to their toolboxes. Pull-in-place structural liners and blownin epoxy coatings are two pipe lining technologies used worldwide to rehabilitate pipes without destruction. These methods result in less time spent, less mess and lower reconstruction costs. Pipe lining It is easy to see the importance of updating pipe sys- tems. Lining companies want to provide cost-effective solutions to owners of buildings and homes, while prop- erty owners and managers want a cost-effective way to address their slowly failing infrastructure without destroying their buildings in the process. Old drainpipes can be rehabilitated and become usable again, thereby eliminating the need to remove them and fill landfills with more construction waste. Pipe lining technology requires no digging or destruc- tion and is an effective, long-term solution for failing pipe systems located both inside and outside of build- ings. It can hold up to the structural strength of a new pipe, without the costly digging and replacement repairs. Pipe liners protect the carried contents from mixing with the metals within the pipes, which can result in decomposition or lead leaching into drinking water. Not only are potable water lines and drain lines being reha- bilitated, but the same technologies are used to retrofit vertical applications, roof drains and mechanical sys- tems, including fire suppression and HVAC systems. Trenchless pipe lining technologies are not new; some of the technologies have been used for decades and have passed the test of time. Since the late 1980s, for example, all of the collection, hold and transfer pipe systems in the U.S. Navy s aircraft carrier fleet have been lined with Nu Flow s blown-in epoxy coating. Established in 1987, American Pipe Lining (APL) began in San Diego, Calif., where it worked with the U.S. Navy to develop and later patent epoxy lining tech- nology to protect aircraft carriers, vessels and piping in government facilities. Equipment was developed to apply an epoxy coating to the interior of pipes in place in order to meet the demands of different applications, conditions and environments. This included maintaining pipes at required temperatures for optimal in-place cleaning and coating. APL, which was acquired by Nu Flow in 2007, later expanded its lining solutions to include applications in the private and domestic piping markets that faced aging potable water systems and poor water quality. This tech- nology is still being used today and is licensed world- wide to rehabilitate residential, commercial, industrial, federal and municipal properties. Epoxy coating Epoxy coating restoration of pipe systems is a non- invasive process; epoxy is used to coat the inside walls of pipes without destruction to the interior or exterior surfaces of building structures, hardscape or landscape. Case Study: Nu Flow España Conserves World Heritage Site With its many historic buildings, Washington DC and, for that matter, federal buildings across the country are prime candidates for pipe corrosion, notes Paul Corneil, director of research and development at Nu Flow, San Diego, CA, a manufacturer and installer of cured-in-place epoxy pipe lining solutions. The company began its services in 2000 with the rehabilitation of drain lines and has done many projects on both drains and small-diameter pipes in government buildings, and commercial and residential. By the time people realize there s a problem with a drain, it s usually in terrible shape, says Corneil. They re badly corroded or starting to separate, or roots have entered. Inside older buildings, it s typically a cast-iron vertical stack that has corroded inward, so the diameter of the pipe decreases from something like four inches to three. In such cases, the problem is aggravated if plumbers scrape the insides of the pipes, because the scale falls down and creates a blockage. From then on, the freshly scoured pipe corrodes much faster. If you stop inside corrosion, you ll have something that will last a long time, says Corneil. We did drain lines in a DC building that were literally bits and pieces, and when it rained the water came into the offices because there was no pipe left. These pipes were behind layered brick one foot back, and there was brick around the drain, so the pipe chase would have been disastrous to replace. The Nu Flow process uses high-pressure sand blasting to clear pipes of corrosion, followed by cured-in-place epoxy, and liners for larger-diameter pipes up to 12 inches. Trenchless pipe lining companies may not understand the rationale behind tearing your building apart in order to ultimately protect it. It is a counterproductive process. One of the most irresponsible things a property manager can do is allow construction on his or her property when there are sufficient solutions available that do not require any demolition to the property. Trenchless pipe lining to the rescue. Trenchless pipe lining technologies are not new some of the technologies have been used for decades, passing the test of time. Project: Rehabilitate 5 rainwater drain pipes in the main building of a hospital in Barcelona. Customer: SAPIC located in Barcelona, Spain, a restoration, renovation and consolidation company of older buildings. They also build new construction including residential, industrial, sports centers, public works, bridges and other structures. It was a hard job because of the temperatures we had on the outside, but we are proud having collaborated to the conservation of this great building. - NU FLOW ESPAÑA Team Site: Hospital de la Santa Creu in Sant Pau, an unmistakable landmark in the culture and heritage of Barcelona. Together with Palau de la Música Catalana, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. System: The system consists of 5 ceramic rainwater drain pipes ranging from 98 mm to 150 mm and are located in the main building of Hospital de la Santa Creu. Circumvention: The customer wanted to prevent further damage to the aging building and chose a solution that would not destroy the frontage of the historic building during the restoration process. If the customer were to choose a tradition method, the frontage of this historic building would have been destroyed. Solution: Nu Flow España was able to rehabilitate the rainwater drain pipes at the World Heritage Site with Nu Flow s Pull-in-Place liners in outside temperatures upwards of 97 degrees Fahrenheit. The liners were pulled through the pipes using the patented Nu Flow process, creating a seamless pipe within the original drain pipes.
