3 Events and Conferences: NFMT Vegas International Case Study: Radisson Blu Hotel Radisson Hotel in Cape Town Not Disrupted During Reline Project This prestigious, waterfront hotel experienced a leaking sewer stack inside the hotel s spa. A Nu Flow licensee was chosen to rehabilitate the failing pipe line, because Nu Flow s unique, non-destructive pipe lining solution would not cause any disruption to the hotel or its guests. Nu Flow recently attended the Building Operating Management s NFMT Conference and Tradeshow in Las Vegas, NV. We introduced our Nu Drain system to hundreds of facility managers from across the country. More than 1,000 professionals responsible for the management, operations, maintenance, renovation and construction of non-residential buildings attended the show, which was held in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. In these two-day courses, technicians, with all ranges of skill levels, were taught various Nu Drain system techniques to improve their performance on the job. If you aren t one of the licensees who benefited from these training courses, please contact your sales representative or call It was impossible to repair the cracked sewer stack using traditional repair methods, so Nu Flow s non-destructive lining system was the ideal solution. Project: Rehabilitate a cracked sewer stack in-place using Nu Drain. Customer and Site: The beautiful, five-story, Radisson Blu Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa, which sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain. System and Problem: The hotel had a 110mm-wide (4 inches) PVC sewer stack that was cracked and leaking. The pipe line runs within a service duct, located inside the hotel s spa area. Circumvention: It was impossible to repair the cracked pipe using traditional methods. Solution: Water Damage Services, a Nu Flow licensee, used the Nu Drain system to reline the damaged section of pipe. The structural liner was saturated with Nu Flow s quick cure epoxy, which cures in one hour, therefore ensuring minimal disruption to the hotel and its guests. The end result is a new, seamless pipe within the old pipe. This protective liner will prevent future cracks and leaks in the sewer stack. Nu Flow Newsletter -Summer

4 Case Study: San Diego Public University University s Leaking Pipes Rehabilitated Over Spring Break This university needed a leaking HVAC system rehabilitated in-place during its one-week spring break, and Nu Flow was up to the challenge. The pipes were effectively cleaned and lined without causing any destruction or disruption to normal school operations. Case Study: Hollywood Skyscraper Liquid Diesel Fuel Lines Project: Use Nu Line to rehabilitate the failing HVAC lines in-situ. Site: A southern California public university s science building. This 3-story building was constructed in 2002 and holds science classrooms, laboratories and staff offices. System: 650 feet of black steel pipes that make up the HVAC chilled water system for the building. The 6"-wide pipes are located above the ceiling of the first floor, behind fire rated drywall ceiling. (Left) Corroded black steel pipe before cleaning. (Right) Black steel pipe with epoxy coating. Problem: The black steel pipes had water corrosion and MIC build-up, which caused leaks throughout the system. Also, the school wanted the work done during spring break, so there was a very tight schedule. Circumvention: If the university had chosen a traditional pipe repair instead of Nu Flow s in-place solution, the science building would have been closed off to students and faculty during the normal school year. The fire rated drywall ceilings would be opened, causing a messy destruction site and expensive repairs. Solution: Nu Flow s most skilled Nu Line technicians completed this project within the short timeframe. The pipes were cleaned and then the epoxy was applied to the pipe system. This epoxy barrier coating will prevent future pinhole leaks, corrosion, MIC build-up and other common failures. This process was completed using two small existing access points at the beginning and the end of the pipe system. 5 Case Study: Health Food and Beverage Health Food Restaurant Stays Open During Drain Rehabilitation Restaurant Case Study: Canadian Telecommunications Nu Flow Prevents Disruptions to Telecommunications Provider Povider Whether it is the hot water from the dishwashers or acidic foods put down the garbage disposals, drain pipe failures are commonly found in restaurant kitchens. Nu Flow helped this restaurant rehabilitate its failing drain line without causing business closure or destruction to the property. This prestigious customer trusted Nu Flow s unique, non-destructive pipe lining solution to prevent future pipe system failures, as well as prevent business disruptions while performing the work. As the world s leading small diameter pipe lining company, Nu Flow lined the pipes, although in extremely hard-to-access areas, while the facility remained fully operational. Project: Use Nu Drain to line a failing pipe line that is below ground and hanging above a ceiling. Project: Use the Nu Drain system to rehabilitate leaking storm drains without disrupting the customer s normal business operations. Customer and Site: A health food and beverage restaurant chain in Anaheim, California. Customer: One of Canada s largest telecommunications providers, which offers services such as mobile phones, cable, internet and residential landlines. System: A cast iron sink drain system with diameters of 2", 3" and 4". This 13-year-old pipe line is located underneath the restaurant s floor and also runs through the neighboring retail store, where it is exposed along the ceiling. Site: A four-story building in Ontario that houses the communication switch boards and terminals for a large portion of Ontario. Problem: The acidic ingredients from the smoothies accelerated corrosion inside of the pipe line, causing it to rot and leak. The exposed pipe line located along the ceiling in the neighboring retail store leaked onto merchandise and damaged it. Circumvention: If this customer did not choose Nu Flow s in-place solutions, both the smoothie restaurant and the retail store would have to be closed in order for a traditional repair to be implemented. System: Vertical and horizontal storm lines that range from 3" to 6" in diameter. Problem: The storm drain system experienced leaks due to cracks and mechanical joint failures. The horizontal storm drains, which are covered with electrical wires, ductwork and asbestos, run directly over switchboards, terminals and batteries for the communication network. Leaks jeopardize the functionality of the communication network. Nu Flow s structural liner is installed in-place, which prevented destruction and business closure to this restaurant. Circumvention: Since the pipes are mixed with electrical wires, ductwork and asbestos, a traditional repipe of the failing storm drain system would create a colossal mess. Also, the location of the pipes being directly over significant communication network devices would make a repipe nearly impossible without greatly interrupting normal operations of the network. The customer did not want the pipe system repair to interfere with business operations. Solution: Skilled Nu Flow technicians devised and executed an out-of-the-box solution for this customer. The failing drain line was first cleaned with our pneumatic tools and then lined with our Nu Drain system. This Pull-in-Place felt liner was soaked in epoxy, placed in the pipe line and then set to cure. The cured liner became a new, seamless and protective pipe-within-a-pipe that will prevent erosion and other failures to the pipe line. This entire process was completed without any disruption or destruction to the health food and beverage restaurant or the retail store. Solution: Nu Flow s Nu Drain system was the perfect solution for the telecommunications company, because the facility remained fully operational during all of our work. Our Pull-inPlace structural liner was installed in the hard-to-access storm drain pipes using limited pipe access, which reduced the cost of asbestos abatements. Once the epoxy-saturated liner cured, it formed a protective, seamless pipe within the host pipe. This new pipe will prevent leaks from occurring. Drain systems in restaurants encounter many harsh substances that may cause frequent erosion or backups. 6 The Emergence and Benefits of Pipe Lining Damage Prevention Professional For years, homeowners, property managers and municipalities have resorted to traditional pipe replacement methods to fix their cracking, leaking and root-intruded pipes. The process to dig up and replace the pipes is not only time consuming, but the renovation costs can be expensive, especially in a situation where pipes are located behind finished walls, underneath tiled flooring or below landscaped lawns. A traditional re-pipe consists of demolition of whatever is covering the pipe. If the pipes were located in the ground, the system would be shut down, followed by the concrete foundation being dug up by excavators and removed, along with any fill. The pipes would then be removed and discarded. The new pipes would then be installed, tested and the fill would be delivered. Once complete and after much downtime, the pipes are operational. Contractors would then need to repair the landscape and portions of the building that were destroyed during the re-pipe. Trenchless pipe lining technologies are not new. Some of the technologies have been used for decades, passing the test of time. For example, starting in the late 1980s, all of the U.S. Navy s Aircraft Carriers collection, hold and transfer pipe systems have been lined with blown-in epoxy coatings. Most facilities built prior to the 1970s have sewer lines composed of cast iron and clay. The most common problem in these lines is cracking at the joints, root intrusion and the bottom of the pipe rusting out; this can ultimately be a result of, or lead to, root intrusion. Root intrusion in sewer pipe systems is reported to cause 50% of all sewer blockages. Traditional care for root intrusion is rarely a long-term fix. With the pipe lining method, roots can be removed and a liner can be pulled into place, creating a structurally sound pipe within the existing pipe. Other common problems include calcification in sewer lines and ground movement. Contractor Brings Nu Flow To Alaska Alaska-Washington Connection Magazine Nu Flow Alaska is rapidly building a following in the Last Frontier for its creative lining solutions for deteriorating small-diameter pipes inside buildings. The Anchorage location is one of 300 licensees of Nu Flow in the United States, Canada and more than 50 countries on five continents. Nu Flow rehabilitates several types of potable, drain and mechanical pipe systems in residential, commercial, industrial and municipal buildings by installing blown-in epoxy coating and Pull-in-Place structural liners. Nu Flow Alaska services all of Alaska, said Joe Jaime, who heads the six-employee Anchorage office. Jaime, a general contractor in Alaska for more than 20 years, purchased the license from Nu Flow in May 2012 for the rights to market the company s products and services in Alaska. I was working on a sewer line replacement project at the VA Long Beach Hospital (Long Beach, Calif.) and encountered an area where we couldn t replace the pipe. I searched the Internet and found a company that lined pipes from the inside without having to replace the pipe, which was Nu Flow. Once I saw how Nu Flow had epoxy lined the sewer line pipe, I knew there would be a need for this kind of application in Alaska. Licensee Corner: Nu Flow St. Louis Site: A four-story mansion located in the beautiful Washington Terrace Historic District, in St. Louis, Missouri. Built in the early 1900s, this home has a brick and stone exterior and recently sold for several millions of dollars. This house and the others in its neighborhood are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. System: The entire cast iron roof drain system, which has pipes with diameters of 4". The pipes reside within the ceilings and walls of the four-story building. Some of the pipes are located behind original, handcrafted, wooden bookcases. Problem: A roof drain leak in between the second floor ceiling and the second floor caused water damage to the first floor s historical, wooden bookcases, as well as the basement. Although the home experienced these leaks for several years, repairing the leaks was put on the backburner, because the residents did not want to have to destroy the wooden bookcases. A traditional repipe repair would destroy the original, handcrafted bookcases in order to access the pipe line. Solution: After some research, the residents of this historical home contacted Nu Flow St. Louis to rehabilitate the failing pipe system with our non-destructive technology. This Nu Flow Service Company saved the customer tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage and rebuilding costs. First, the technicians cleaned the drain system with Nu Flow s Micro-Cutter with fingers. Then, using Nu Flow s proprietary single access technology, the Nu Drain liner was installed in the basement s existing access point and pushed it up through the pipe line. Once in place, it cured within hours to form a protective, seamless liner within the host pipe. The entire project only took 8 hours and did not cause any disruption to the residents.
