2 MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR Dear Readers and Members of the UDSM community, It is my pleasure to invite you to this issue of Mlimani Newsletter. I congratulate the UDSM management and staff for their personal and joint efforts that have enabled us to accomplish the various planned activities towards the achievement of UDSM Vision Through these efforts the University has continued to fulfil its teaching, research and knowledge exchange obligations. I also thank and congratulate our esteemed students and their parents and guardians for continuing to be our loyal customers and major stakeholders. This Newsletter issue presents some important events and activities that have happened since the release of last issue. In the October 2014 graduations, a total of 6,823 students graduated in two clusters as customary; the first on 8 th November 2014 and the second on 15 th November This number includes 2 honorary degree recipients: the Late Chancellor, Ambassador Fulgence Michael Kazaura and Lord David John Sainsbury, the Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. There were a record total of 68 PhD awards, as compared to 42 in the last academic year. A number of other important developments have also happened. The University has started new programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At the undergraduate level, USDM has introduced three new undergraduate programs relating to gas and oil, namely petroleum engineering, petroleum geology and petroleum chemistry. Other new undergraduate programs are: Bachelor of Architecture (CoET); Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Studies (Library); Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture (CoNAS); Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies (IDS) and Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Ethics (CoHU). The new programs introduced at the postgraduate level include Master of Public Health (CoSS); Master of Arts in Applied Economics (CoSS); Master of Arts in Research and Public Policy (CoSS); Master of Educational Management and Administration (SoED) and Master of Science in Petroleum Geology. In addition, plans are underway to establish six other undergraduate programs, namely: Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology; Bachelor of Social Work; Bachelor of Arts in Psychology; Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Design; Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television and Bachelor of Arts in Music. In addition to the introduction of new programs, the University has installed the TURNITIN Anti-Plagiarism Software to address incidences of plagiarism in academic work, especially at postgraduate level. This has been followed by a series of training workshops for senior academic staff on the use of the software. We have also experienced some sad and disappointing events that touched our hearts. The worst of all is the road accident that occurred in the Changarawe area, Iringa Region on 11 th March. Sadly, we lost five of our students in that incident alone. The deceased were Mr. Killeo, Eric (B.A. Education, UDSM); Mr. Sosten, Daud (B.A. Education, UDSM); Mr. Watson, Jeremia (B.A. Education, UDSM); Mr. Chiwangu, Didimo (B.A. Education, UDSM); and Mr. Mbaule, Frank (B.A. Education, DUCE). The University held an Institutional Vigil for the fallen sons on 20 th March 2015 at Nkrumah Hall. In another sad incident, on 16 th March 2015 fire broke out at Block B of the University s Mabibo Hostels, which accommodates female students. It destroyed part of the building, university property, infrastructures and students belongings such as computers, clothes, books, mobile phones and cash. The University Management took the necessary measures to provide the affected students with proper accommodation and other forms of assistance. As usual, the Newsletter also offers popular columns with our readers. They cover activities relating to the University administration, research, knowledge exchange, alumni affairs, staff profiles and announcements. You will note on the onset that the University of Dar es Salaam is revamping its dignity as the center of intellectual exchange and development dialogue. Worthy of particular mention is the Seventh Julius Nyerere Intellectual Festival held from 13 th to 15 th April It drew an array of renowned African Intellectuals and grass roots voices. The theme of the Festival was Privatisation and Social Justice for Grassroots Communities. In another event, the Former President, His Excellency Alhaj Ali Hassan Mwinyi, launched new publications produced by members and associates of the Institute of Kiswahili Studies (IKS) on 19 th March 2015 at the Nkrumah Hall. Earlier on in January 2015, the Honorary Consular of Mexico in Tanzania and CEO of Lab Equip Limited, Mr. Mohammed Reza Saboor, issued the Award of Excellence to the best UDSM students in science during the academic year 2013/2014. The recipients of the award were Ms. Doreen Kabuche and Mr. Florian Mkemwa. We congratulate them for their achievements. In reading the Newsletter, readers will also notice a resilient theme of knowledge exchange through various international and national conferences and workshops hosted by the various University units. I trust that this edition of the Newsletter will illustrate the growing success of the series. We look forward to continued publication of this important information outlet. I am sure the Editor will appreciate receiving feedback in the form of ideas, suggestions or recommendations for further improvements of the Newsletter. I wish all the esteemed readers happy reading. It was launched by the Chairperson of the Mwalimu Nyerere Professional Chair, Prof. Penina Mlama. The writer gives a glimpse of a caring future from the past where the great 20th century movements for national independence were to end the scourge of Western occupation with the theft of human labour and natural resources. The disastrous regimes that followed wiped from view all that these movements achieved. Several copies were bought at the festival. 17 University of Dar es salaam and Partners launch a big project on integrated system for treating agro based industrial wastewater and recovering the resources (nutrients and biogas) in Arusha on 29th april 2015 FOCUS ON RESEARCH Managing Director of BIL, Mr Olomi giving explanations to the Guest of Honour (his back facing the camera) on the launch of the project In Tanzania, the project focuses on optimizing biogas production, water reuse and nutrient recovery from agro process effluents. The project activities were carried out at Banana Investment Ltd (BIL) which is a winery company situated along Old Moshi Road, in Arusha City. BIL is in the business of production and distribution of alcoholic beverages made from ripe bananas. The College of Engineering and Technology of the University of Dar es Salaam is the leading partner institution implementing the project in Tanzania. before the treated water is reused for fishing and agricultural activities. Following the successful implementation of the project at BIL, a new project financed through the World Bank has been realized. An integrated process for treating wastewater is being implemented for Mwanza City Abattoir with production capacity of 300 cattle, 150 goats and 150 sheep per day and it is estimated to produce about 150 m3 of highly leaded wastewater per day. DVC Research of UDSM, Prof Cuthbert Kimambo giving the welcome remarks The integrated wastewater management processes involve digestion of the organic matter in wastewater to produce biogas. This biogas contains about 50% methane gas which is green house gas (GHG) known to cause climate change. By capturing the biogas, there will be substantial reduction in its emission at project sites and therefore mitigating climate change. This gas can be combusted to produce energy and CO2, which is less damaging to the environments. The biogas digester gives slurry (bio-fertilizers) that is rich in nutrients. The bio digester has a liquid component that is treated in a Constructed Wetland for further reduction of pollutants Guest of Honor, Prof Makame Mbarawa addressing the audience (not in the photo) on official launch of the BIL project A group photo of the researchers for consortium with the Guest of Honour (seated first from right) 17
