1 TEMPLATE FOR WEBSITE INFORMATION COLLECTION News Photo Department of Civil Engineering Department Description The DIT through the Department of Civil Engineering will soon start offering training programmes at Myunga Campus in Mbeya Regional. The campus is located 80 km from Tunduma along Tunduma Sumbawanga Road. It is expected that by the beginning of next academic year September 2015 the first programmes will have started. Events Event Name Stakeholders Workshop for Oil and Gas Technician Programme Event date 16 th March 2015 The DIT through Department of Civil Engineering has developed a Technician Programme in Oil and Gas. As requirement by the NACTE, the institute had organized a stakeholders workshop to discuss the curriculum and make recommendations.

Departmental Information 2.1 Civil Engineering Department Photo to be inserted 1.2 Why Considering Studying at this Department The Department of Civil Engineering at DIT provides an educational experience and skills that will prepare you to become a successful civil and extractive (mining) engineering professionals, capable of undertaking engineering works and further advanced studies. The training at the Department is Outcome based training realized through the CBET training system regulated by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE). From this base, students develop the hands on skills and the ability to conceptualize. The Department has sufficient training resources. This included a well-trained academic and support staff members and physical resources (laboratories and equipment) which is also being upgraded based on technological advancement. 2.3 Training Programmes The Department conducts both the long term training programmes (courses) and short term courses. All long term training programmes have been accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) while the short course are internally accredited Long term Programmes A: Diploma Programmes The Department conducts TWO diploma programmes and expecting to start a THIRD programme at the beginning of the 2015/16 academic year: A1: Diploma Programme in Civil Engineering The programme aimed at producing Civil Engineering Technicians with skills in civil Engineering Materials, Building Construction, design of simple civil engineering structures, Water Resources, Highway Engineering and Geotechnical. A2: Diploma Programme in Mining Engineering Our Ordinary Diploma started in 2006/07 academic year has a focus in the world of work; graduates of this programme are developed to have aspirations to play a leading role in undertaking implementations

3 of most technical solutions in extractive industry. Our delivery in this program is active, outdoor, handon learning, with industrial practical placement and projects that will challenge the student to put your new skill into practice. This program is delivered by renowned trainers who are committed to students success and keep close contact with various stakeholders for placements, paid co-ops and internnships. Further, graduated from this program apart from the technical knowledge, are equipped with additional entrepreneurial skills. A3: Diploma in Civil and Highway Engineering The programme aims at producing Civil Engineering Technicians with specialization in Highway Engineering]. To start in the academic year 2015/16. A4: Higher Diploma in Oil and Gas Engineering This new program is expected to start in 2015/16, it has been developed to provide training for employment within both oil and gas value chain. There are also career opportunities in downstream industries, or working for environmental monitoring agencies. B: Undergraduate Programmes The Department conducts ONE Undergraduate degree programme. B1: Bachelor in Civil Engineering The programme aimed at producing Civil Engineers with skills in civil Engineering design, construction, supervisory skills and entrepreneurship skills in areas of Water Resources, Highway, Geotechnical, Structure and Construction Management. B2: Bachelor in Mining Engineering Recent survey has indicated that Tanzania does not have a local institution that offers an applied degree programme in a category of Mining Engineering; most of the graduates in mining industry are from the universities with limited applied engineering background. In a nutshell, the number of Mining Engineers is below the critical mass required to stimulate and spearhead socio-economic development. In leau to this DIT is developing the Bachelor in Mining Engineering program and is expected to start during the 2016/17 academic year as an effort to bridge the gap. C: Postgraduate Programmes The department conducts ONE postgraduate programme: C1: Master of Engineering in Maintenance Management The programme is coordinated by the Department of Research Publication and Postgraduate studies. The aim of this programme is to equip engineers to play roles requiring high level of skills, knowledge and understanding in the field of Maintenance Engineering in which they can take responsibility at respective area of work. 4 2.3.1 Short term Programmes Civil Engineering The department conducts a number of short courses in the areas of Civil and Mining (extractive industry) Engineering. The courses are either readymade or tailor made. The details of the readymade courses can be obtained from the Institute Consultancy Bureau (ICB) which is responsible for the coordination of the short term courses. For the tailor made courses information can be obtained either direct from Civil Engineering Department or through the ICB Short term Programmes Extractive Sector DIT has joined hand with various other stakeholders as a subset of the Multi-stakeholder Initiatives in seeking to support formalization of the ASM sector through targeted interventions such as to: Improve viability of ASM operations and in turn incomes of miners Improve the miners knowledge and skills Improve access to finance, equipment, technology and markets Reduce negative social, health and environmental impacts like mercury exposure, land degradation, child labour, gender inequality, unsafe and exploitative working conditions. Currently DIT is conducting TNA in several areas and evaluating the potential beneficiaries and sustainability of the training program. 1.3 Research and Consultancy Work The Department conducts research and consultancy in the following areas through its academic and supporting staff members: Geotechnical Engineering Water Resources and Environmental Engineering Highway and Transportation Engineering and Structural Engineering Extractive Sector (Mineral Exploration, Mining, Mineral Beneficiation, Oil and Gas etc) Note that the Department also conduct researches through undergraduate and postgraduate students projects and dissertations respectively as requirement for their studies.
