1 The University earned a Green Rating for its campus wide initiatives from the Princeton Review. Green incorporated into our academic programs, facilities, and campus initiatives. Committed to developing green into our undergraduate and graduate programs. Embarking on the development of a new interdisciplinary Master s program in Green Systems.

2 Sustainability Practices for the campus: Use of Green cleaning practices & equipment Use of Green paper products Reduced water usage Using recycled water for campus irrigation system Energy management of facilities Campus has a recycling program resulting in a 78% diversion from the landfill Campus Compost Program picks up food scraps from the kitchen once per day, and creates organic fertilizers that will be used for oncampus agriculture, reducing reliance on external inputs.

3 Outdoor laboratory and field study site of observation, demonstration, and research in sustainable land use. Focus on design and maintenance of Agriculturally productive ecosystems which have diversity, stability and resilience. Workshops for community members and training for elementary and secondary teachers in the use of gardens on their campuses to teach integrated science, social studies, language arts and the humanities.

7 Campus Sustainability Initiatives Council for Sustainable Futures: devoted to the teaching, outreach, and research of Sustainability Host of 3 rd Annual Conference for Sustainable Futures - Oct 16-18, Three day event features programs, speakers and activities that provide solutions to global climate change and the greening of our Central Valley Endangered Species Recovery Program a cooperative program between USBR & USFWS. ~30 scientists, students, and support staff working to facilitate endangered species recovery and resolve conservation conflicts through scientifically based recovery planning and implementation. Director Patrick Kelly received 2009 USFWS Recovery Champion Award. Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit, a cooperative with all the UCs and some of the CSUs to engage in ecological research

8 started in Fall 2006 to contribute solutions to environmental and sustainability issues research-based master's program coursework includes ecosystem services, restoration ecology, environmental policy, and quantitative methods prepares students for careers in ecology, teaching, and doctoral programs.

9 Master s in Green Systems Program Prepare a workforce for the future green economy Focus on green technologies and policy most germane to California s Central Valley including solar energy, biofuels, and other clean and renewable energies, energy analysis and conservation, agricultural practices, land and water use and transportation. Re-tool current professionals from all disciplines Develop a innovative curriculum from the social and natural sciences, including biology, chemistry, economics, geography, geology, political science, physics and public administration. Utilize the Master s in Interdisciplinary Studies Develop a Green Concentration The Program being developed for late 2010 launch.

10 Master s in Green Systems Program Next Steps Meet with regional experts and employers to refine the curricula and content for courses, as well as identify guest lecturers for courses, field trip and internship opportunities. Underway Survey alumni and regional professionals for interest and finalize scheduling Finalize courses and curricula and obtain approvals.
