Calvary Church Nursery Ministry The Garden f Grace where little spruts grw in Gd s care Psalm 91:1 states, He wh dwells in the shelter f the Mst High will rest in the shadw f the Almighty. In ther wrds, even as we walk mment by mment with Gd, Gd faithfully surrunds us with His care. This picture f faithful care is what Calvary s nursery ministry is abut. We mdel Gd s care fr us t thse arund us. Therefre, ur visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued. Safe Envirnment - Where security is superir and safe play areas are a pririty Each Individual is cared fr and valued - This includes babies, parents and staff Babies - Children have an intrinsic value simply because they were created by Gd hw d we shw them they are valued? By caring fr them.speaking their names gently, reading bks abut their Creatr, singing sngs abut their Savir, verbalizing thankfulness fr their friends, affirming their Gdly behavir, respnding t their cries patiently, reading Gd s wrd t them, praying fr them, and serving when we have prmised t s that the children have an adequate number f lving arms t hld them. Parents/Guardians - Welcming the parents and their children warmly int ur midst shws we value the whle family s spiritual grwth at Calvary Church. We care fr each individual by greeting them with sincere smiles and displaying genuine interest in the family s welfare. Hw can we d this? By making sure we have all pertinent infrmatin n the sign in sheet, by cmmunicating penly and cperating in rder t prvide the best care fr the children. Nursery Staff - We value each ther by respecting each ther s desire fr spiritual grwth. S, we arrive n time t relieve thse wh served befre us, and we cme n ur scheduled date s that thers will have the pprtunity t wrship when they have scheduled t d s. We shw an interest in each ther s life by expressing Gd s care thrugh speaking wrds f encuragement, by giving a timely hug, and by substituting fr a c-wrker wh needs us. Reflecting the caring and lving image f Christ Calvary Church Nursery Ministry The Garden f Grace Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

(see prcedure) Sign In Welcme parents and babies in a warm, friendly way Usually, we ask parents t stay utside the nursery, but if the child needs sme cmfrting reassurance frm Mm r Dad they are mst certainly welcme t enter the rm. Particularly, infrm first time visitrs that they may stay. Als, assure them that we will call them if their baby gets upset. Cmplete a name tag fr each baby with the child s first and last name plus the family number and cubby number. Place it n the child s back. Label the child s bttles, cups, pacifiers, etc. Place the baby s items in the cubby that crrespnds with the number n the sign-in sheet. Offer a bag tag t parents if their diaper bag is nt labeled. Tags are in the drawer belw the sign-in sheet r at the Nursery Checkpint. Take the kiddie keeper ut f the cubby. Place the clip end n the baby and give the ring side t the parent. Remind parents that they must bring the Kiddie Keeper back with them when they cme fr their baby. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

What t d while the baby is in yur care PROCEDURES FOR CAREGIVERS All staff are respnsible fr teaching the designated curriculum and fr praying fr each child at least nce while he is in ur care. Share the lve f Jesus with ur babies as yu rck them, feed them, sing t them, play with them, read t them, blw bubbles ver them, r change their diapers. Be intentinal. Make each mment a teachable mment Fcus n Gd, but als shw hw special each child is and hw much they are lved! Fr example: Gd made yu Gd made everything. Gd is s gd (t give us tys t play with, t give us friends t lve, etc.) Gd sent Jesus t save us. Gd gave yu strng arms t thrw that ball. Jesus is my friend. Jesus is the bss. It is never t early t teach f Gd s lve and care. In fact, it s ur jb...nt t baby sit while mm and dad are learning, but t teach these little nes f Gd s grace even as we shw grace t them. Review the sign in sheet fr special instructins n each child befre giving a bttle r snack, diapering, laying dwn fr nap, etc. Give lder babies a snack as needed. Cheeris and ckies are prvided. Have a special snack time at the table rather than giving them ckies the entire hur. If the parents did nt leave a drink give each child a separate paper cup with water. Use yur discretin as t hw much fd t ffer. Remember this is a snack, nt a meal. If a child uses a crib, change the sheet when he is finished in rder t help keep all the children healthy. All children shuld have their diaper changed befre they leave the nursery. Check diapers as necessary r minutes befre each sessin is ver. Fllw the diaper changing prcedure that is psted ver each changing table and that is in this manual. Take lder tddlers t the bathrm as necessary. Leave the bathrm dr ajar if yu enter the bathrm with the child. Place yur hand ver the child s hand t assist with wiping. Always supervise the children and the envirnment carefully. Keep yur full attentin n the children. Use yur eyes and ears, and never turn yur back n them. Never leave children unattended. Lk fr hazards in the rm-a climbing child, an verturned chair, t many tys n the flr fr safe walking, brken tys, etc. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

PROCEDURES FOR CAREGIVERS Pick up time Greet the returning parents with a warm smile in a pleasant manner. Then release the children with a genuine lking frward t seeing yu next time attitude. Give a brief, psitive reprt abut the child s day. If prblems need discussed take the parent aside t d it privately, r refer the prblem t yur rm crdinatr r Nursery Directr. Release babies t parents nly. If smene else is t pick up the child this must be indicated n the sign-in sheet. Only release the child t the persn hlding the kiddie keeper. Parents must have the ring side f the Kiddie Keeper t pick up their child. If they d nt have it with them, insist they g and get it. This is an imprtant security measure. We want ur babies t be released nly t thse wh have prper authrity. We live in a time when these measures had t be put int place-yes, even in Calvary Church. After the last baby has been picked up, please d the fllwing: Straighten the cuntertp. Sanitize the tys that were chewed n r put int a child s muth by washing them with ht, sapy water and spraying them with the bleach disinfecting slutin. Allw them t air dry. Disinfect ther items in the rm by spraying them with the bleach slutin and allwing them t air dry. These items may include swings, walkers, crib rails, large climbing tys, diaper changing area, etc. Empty the bleach spray bttle slutin. If yu see crumbs n the flr, please vacuum them. Ants find their way quickly t the crumbs. (Vacuums are lcated at either end f the nursery suite.) Change crib sheets if a child has been in the crib fr any reasn. Put in a new trash bag. Bags are in the drawer under the changing table. Take trash and dirty laundry t the laundry rm which is lcated acrss frm Rm 337. Turn ut rm lights. Thank Gd fr His precius children. Have a great day knwing yu impacted a life fr the cause f Christ. Calvary Church s Visin is t bring Glry t Gd thrugh the grwing f a biblically healthy spiritual family f fully devted fllwers f Jesus Christ wh make disciples amng the natins. This visin des nt exclude the spruts amng us. In fact, they need t take rt in their biblical health and knwledge f Jesus Christ beginning nw. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

PROCEDURES FOR CAREGIVERS Diapering 1. Gather all supplies diaper wipes 3 glves plastic bag Changed with lve and prayer sticker 2. Wash hands and put n glves. 3. Other imprtant diapering infrmatin: Never shw disgust at a child s diaper. The child may think relieving himself is wrng r yu dn t lve him. During a diaper change is a great time t pray fr the child and t talk eye-t-eye with each ne abut tday s lessn. Never place fd r drink cntainers n the changing table surface. All children shuld have their diaper changed befre they leave the nursery. Check diapers as necessary r 15 t 30 minutes befre each sessin is ver. Diaper changing prcedures are als psted ver each changing table. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

Rub hands tgether fr 20 secnds being sure t wash all surfaces-palms, backs f hands, wrists, under fingernails, and between fingers. 4. Rinse hands well fr at least 10 secnds, then leave the water running. (Singing ne verse f Jesus Lves Me takes abut 30 secnds.) 5. Dry hands with a paper twel. 6. Turn ff faucet with paper twel. Hand Washing It is imprtant t wash yur hands When yu enter the nursery Befre yu serve fd r drink, including bttles and cups Befre yu dress a wund Befre yu change a diaper After yu change a diaper r help a child in the bathrm After using the restrm After cughing r sneezing After wiping a child s nse (glves shuld be wrn fr this jb as well) Hand washing is a simple but effective way f valuing and caring fr thse arund us as we d ur part t keep everyne healthy. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

PROCEDURES FOR CAREGIVERS Curriculum Curriculum fr tw-year lds? Abslutely! One-year lds? Of curse! We use curriculum with ur children in the Garden f Grace frm the time they cme t us as infants until they leave us a preschlers. Teachers in all the rms have a frmal curriculum tl t use t help fcus their praying, teaching, playing, talking, care giving, singing, r finger plays. The main idea is nt t baby sit while mm and dad are learning abut Gd, but t intentinally make every mment cunt. Impress n ur infants and tddlers Gd s lve and His truth. Ask Gd t help yu cmmunicate effectively the message fr the day. Always remember t enjy yurself and the children as yu share Gd s lve and care with them. Yur rewards are eternal. The curriculum in the infant rms (331 and 338) fcuses n prayer. Caregivers can use the prvided prayer guide psted ver the changing table t guide their scripture-based prayers fr each child. Teaching als includes mdeling gd attitudes, giving gentle tuches, prviding quick respnse t hurts, giving hugs t shw ur lve and care, and talking abut Gd s lve and care. The curriculum fr the crawlers and ne year lds (333, 334, 335, 336) includes everything frm the infant curriculum as well as emphasizing a specific Truth Statement each mnth. By referring t the Truth Statement pster, teachers can talk abut this Bible Truth ne-n-ne r ne-n-tw during play, feeding, diapering, etc. Yu will nt have a frmal lessn time at a table. In additin, teachers f ne year lds mdel kind ways t play with a friend, teach hw t be gd caretakers f ur tys, and cntinue t talk abut His praisewrthy deeds. The tw year lds (332 and 337) are taught simple Bible stries emphasizing the same Truth Statements that ur ne-year lds are taught. These tw year lds als learn memry verses and specific sngs that relate t the lessn. Learning Center activities are prvided in rder t increase the sensry experiences f the children s that the lessn is mre likely t stick. Teachers shuld read ver the designated curriculum and related Bible passage befre cming t the nursery. Thugh we can wrk tward having a special time t present the specific bible lessn t tw year lds in a frmal grup, that is nt as imprtant as repeating the Truth Statement r re-telling the stry r quting the memry verse repeatedly during play. The children may nt be able t sit as a grup until the latter part f the year. Meanwhile, the lessn shuld be taught all mrning during play, snack, diapering, disciplining, etc. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

General Infrmatin Nursery Staffing There must always be tw staff members (at least ne adult) in the rm, even if there is nly ne baby. This prvides a safety net fr the child, the staff, and the church. Rms will be staffed accrding t the fllwing guidelines: Age f Child Caregiver/Child Rati Age requirements f caregiver Newbrn -6 mnths 1:2 Adults nly 7-12 mnths 1:3 15 years ld t adult 1 year lds 1:4 15 years ld t adult 2 year lds 1:5 13 years ld t adult Get a substitute t cver fr yu if yu cannt be in the nursery when it is yur turn t serve. Trading dates with smene wh wrks in yur rm is a great way t get a sub. Yu may als trade with smene frm anther rm. Check fr an updated staff schedule each time yu are in the nursery. Please remember when yu are switching that at least ne persn in the nursery must be an adult. When yu first receive yur schedule, enter the dates yu are scheduled t serve nt yur calendar fr the whle year. That way yu will be less likely t frget t cme n the day fr which yu have cmmitted. The babies are cunting n us t care fr them and t teach them abut Jesus. The parents are cunting n us t prvide a safe and caring place fr their child t learn abut Jesus. The 9:25 staff is cunting n the 11:00 staff t arrive early s they may g learn abut Jesus. The Welcme Desk staff is cunting n the caregivers t cme as scheduled s that they may d their assigned tasks, rather than switching staff and babies int ther rms n the spur f the mment in rder t prvide adequate staff t teach the babies abut Jesus. Yur crdinatrs are cunting n yu s that they may attend wrship r ABF t learn abut Jesus, rather than substituting each week fr a staff member wh frgets t cme r neglects t engage a substitute. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

General Infrmatin What are Sme Ways t Help a Crying Baby One way a baby cmmunicates is by crying. A baby cries when he/she is uncmfrtable, hungry, in pain, r needs a diaper change. Try rcking, feeding, burping, diaper changing and diverting the child. Smetimes when tddlers cry as their parents leave them, they are grieving because their parents are ging away and will be gne frm them. At this age, the idea f when a parent will return is really meaningless. Caregivers shuld let the child cry fr a few minutes, while staying clse by t cmfrt them. Then begin t distract the child with a favrite ty r bk. If a child cries befre the parents leave the rm, ask the parents t g and give yu the pprtunity t cmfrt their child. Remind them that yu will call fr them if necessary. If the abve methds fail t cmfrt a baby r tddler, ask ne f the welcme desk staff t place the baby in a strller and g fr a walk. (Yu may strll the child yurself in the nursery drp ff area if there are at least tw ther staff members left in yur nursery.) A parent will need t be called if the child has cried cntinuusly fr fifteen minutes. Parents will appreciate knwing abut this time limit if their child is crying when they leave the rm. We are happy t wrk with parents wh want t make ther arrangements such as letting the child cry fr a shrter r lnger perid f time. These instructins shuld be clearly marked n the sign-in sheet. If yu need t call a parent, cntact smene at the Nursery Welcme Desk t d that fr yu. Keep in mind that crying is hard n everyne- yu, the ther children, the parents and the child wh is crying. Calling fr a parent is a way we wrk tgether t shw Christ s lve and care fr ur nursery family. Sme excerpts n this page used with permissin: The Nurturing Nursery 1992 David C. Ck Publishing C. Our visin is t prvide a safe envirnment where each individual is cared fr and each individual is valued

Prcedures fr the Nursery Checkpint Greeting the Families Yu are the first face the child and parent see when they arrive at the Garden f Grace. Make them want t put dwn rts here by lighting the rm with yur Sn-shine. Let yur wrds be watered with grace, remembering that yur jb is t care fr and t value each ne wh steps thrugh the gates. One way we shw that care is by fllwing the check pint prcedures with cnfidence, knwing they were put in place fr the safety f Gd s children. Access t the Nursery N ne, except staff, shuld be entering the nursery withut either a child r a kiddie keeper. Keep ur children safe. Staff must shw yu their Calvary Church Wrker Pht ID. If an individual des nt have the ID, s/he must g t Children s Ministry Central t btain a temprary wrker pass. Only ne adult shuld drp ff r pick up the child. Please have ther family members wait utside the gate in rder t avid cngestin and cnfusin. Only peple entering the nursery shuld be cming thrugh the garden gates. Parents and staff shuld leave thrugh the EXIT drs at either end f the nursery. This will als avid cnfusin at the busy gate area. Parents must have tw pssessins any time they pass thrugh the garden gates. Fr Drp-ff Their pht ID and their child Fr Pick-up Their pht ID and their kiddie keeper Prcedures When a parent arrives with a child: 1. Ask t see the parent s Calvary ID. Offer t escrt the family t the Welcme Desk where thy can hear abut ABF s. 7. Return t the Checkpint immediately. Visitrs may naturally feel uneasy abut leaving their precius child in the hands f strangers. Fllwing security measures in a friendly and cnfident manner can help them t feel at hme and at peace. Other Respnsibilities Check the nurseries t make sure each has an apprpriate caregiver/child rati. Als, check t see that relief staff has shwn up. If necessary, ask caregivers t switch nurseries and/r mve babies. Take attendance n the purple cards and the quarterly attendance sheets at 10 and 11:30. Help t calm crying babies by pushing them in strllers. If a child has been crying cntinuusly fr 15 minutes, a caregiver may ask yu t call fr a parent. T page a parent, call the Welcme Desk at extensin 255. Give them the family number r the parent s name and lcatin if ther than the auditrium. When the parent arrives, please ask if they have first visited the Welcme Desk in rder fr their number t be remved frm the screens. If they have nt, call the Welcme Desk t have their number remved. These instructins are als lcated beside the phne at Nursery Checkpint. At the end f the service make sure all children have been picked up. Turn ff the lights and lck the drs.
