6 LONE STAR LEGACY PARK AWARD Oscar Rose Park was recently selected as a Texas Recreation and Park Society Lone Star Legacy Park Award winner. This distinct honor is only awarded to Parks that meet select criteria. Oscar Rose Park is one of 12 Parks in Texas to have received this recognition. A Lone Star Legacy Park is classified as a park that holds special prominence in the local community and the state of Texas. To qualify for consideration, the park must have endured the test of time and become iconic to those who have visited, played and rested on its grounds. Parks have played an important role in the development of our communities throughout history. Much like Main Streets helped to provide commerce and identity, local parks helped to promote community, natural respite and social interaction as communities were founded, developed and prospered and all parks so designated will be included in a state-wide initiative promoting Heritage Tourism. Oscar Rose Park is celebrating 99 years in 2013 and is Abilene s oldest park. It is currently home to the Rose Park Recreation Center, Tennis Center, Adaptive Recreation Services, Rose Park Senior Center, Skate Park, Bridge Center, Rose Park Activity Building, Abilene Community Theater, Safety City, Rose Park Swimming Pool, Baseball Fields, Armory Football Field, and a Playground Area. The Community Services Staff want to recognize Mayor Norm Archibald and the Abilene City Council, Jay Moore, Abilene Preservation League, City of Abilene Parks and Recreation Board, Texas State Historical Commission, Abilene Reporter News, and the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau for their assistance in composing this award.
