6 Registration Information SMH Hospital Employees: Please register for all courses via the MY NET LEARNING Website located on the hospital intranet page or via the link below. Your Login ID is your employee number. No password is required for use. For non SMH Employees: Please register via the hospital website under the education calendar or call if you have questions. The SMH Education Calendar is on our IF THERE IS NO SPACE IN THE CLASS OR THE CLASS IS CANCELLED, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN or A PHONE CALL TO NOTIFY YOU. A wait list may be formed if applicable. The Nursing Education Department reserves the right to cancel a course if minimum numbers are not met. If the class is cancelled, you will receive a phone call. NON-Sheridan Memorial Hospital (SMH) registrants: If you are a non-smh person registering for a course, you are not considered registered until your fee is received. Checks can be made payable to Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Registration fees will not be returned if you cancel after the registration deadline (2 weeks prior to course date) or you are a no-show to the course. Directions to the Hospital: Highway I 90 take Exit 23 (5 th street) toward Sheridan and continue on 5th for approx 3 miles until you see SMH on your right. PARKING: Access the back parking lot via Kentucky Street access (Welch Cancer Center).*You will receive a receipt for registration fees at the course. Conference Room Locations: Conference Room A, B: lower floor in the hospital cafeteria area. Walker Prairie (Board Room), Paint Rock, Cloud Peak and Med Staff Conference Room are on the 3 rd floor. Stop at the switchboard operator s desk for direction. IT Training Room: Located behind medical records, lower floor of the main hospital. 7 Manual Sign-Out For those courses requiring pre-reading, manuals have been purchased by SMH to decrease the cost to participants and encourage the sharing of resources. Manual sign outs are for hospital employees only. Please sign out the required manual from the Nursing s Administrative Assistant Call Complete the Payroll Deduction form available on the hospital s Intranet page under Links. It may take up to 48hr to get a manual so please plan accordingly. Link to payroll authorization Manual sign out sheet is below: Manuals should be returned within 7 days after the course date. Wyoming Simulation Center Located at 245 Broadway Street in Sheridan, this innovative clinical teaching environment features the latest technology in human patient simulators coupled with a realistic hospital environment. Our Mission: Excellence in patient care achieved through excellence in education. Our Vision: Improving Patient Safety Through the Use of Simulation Technology. The Center, an educational partnership between Sheridan Memorial Hospital and Sheridan College, greatly enhances the ability to teach and facilitate key concepts in the clinical environment. Our center features an 8 bed patient ward with nursing station, functioning med room, 2 high-fidelity rooms and a 24 seat classroom environment. Our high-fidelity rooms are video/audio wired for capturing events to assist in the debriefing process post scenario. Many of our courses will now be taught at the Wyoming Simulation Center, please look for the location of the course in each course description. Parking at the Center-Please park in the back of the building and enter the side entrance. Why Simulation? Simulation is a guided education technique that recreates a clinical environment and gives the learner exposure to high-risk scenarios without putting actual patients at risk. 8 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Course-Certification Purpose: ACLS certification provider course is a two-day program designed for health care professionals providing acute care to cardiac patients. Emphasis will be placed on pharmacological and electrical interventions utilized to stabilize the cardiac patient in the critical intervention period and immediately following. ACLS is valid for two-years Guidelines will be featured until the AHA 2015 guidelines are published mid-year Prerequisites: Must have a current BLS CPR card and Lead II interpretive skills (*recent completion of the Basic Cardiac Course is recommended for those not familiar with Lead II Interpretation). Pre-reading is required as well as a pre-test must be completed-instructions for accessing the pre-test will accompany the provider manual. Please bring your valid BLS card with you to the class. *Manuals can be signed out by hospital employees only. Please call to request a manual. 9 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Course- RENEWAL Purpose: This one-day course is offered for current ACLS card holders to update their ACLS. Pre requisites: Must have a current CPR-BLS for Health Care Professionals card, a current ACLS card and basic lead II interpretive skills (*recent completion of the Basic Cardiac Course is recommended for those not familiar with Lead II Interpretation). Please bring your current cards with you. It is recommended that you have taken the 2-day course twice before taking a renewal course. 10 Advanced Cardiac Life Support-Online Option Purpose: This option is for experienced providers needing to renew their ACLS card. The participant purchases and completes the online version of ACLS and brings the certificate of completion for Part I to an ACLS Instructor for in-person mega code test out. The participant will then receive an updated AHA card. 11 Advanced IV Course-Level II Certification/Recertification Courses Purpose: This SMH course is intended for those RNs who seek to become Level II certified or those needing to recertify their annual status in our facility for the care/maintenance of advanced vascular access devices such as PICC lines, central lines and ports. Once complete, the RN will be considered a go-to person on the nursing units for; assuring standards of care are maintained, trouble shooting of problems with catheters and as a resource person for other staff. They will also recertify this skill set on an annual basis in order to maintain this level. For further information about Level I, II and III nursing care for IV Therapy please see our Patient Care Administration policy # Target Audience: RNs (*LPNS may audit this program for their State Board of Nursing license requirements of 10hr/2 years of central line education) Dates/Times/Locations: **This class is now embedded into Clinical Orientation held on a monthly basis. If you need to attend a class please call X1021 or the nurse educators to find out the next date/time of the course. For those who require the Advanced Level II Certification Renewal-this occurs during your annual skill lab/competency date. Basic Cardiac Class Purpose: This 2 part SMH course is designed to teach/review how to interpret cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias in the Lead II view. It is a very helpful tutorial class for those taking the ACLS and or PALs programs. Target Group: RNs, RTs responsible for interpreting Lead II cardiac rhythms and dysrhythmias and/or those preparing for ACLS/PALS courses. Pre Requisite: Pre-reading is required. 12 Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider- RENEWAL (**BLS = CPR) Purpose: This renewal course reviews basic life support (BLS) principles for adult, child and infant CPR as well as interventions for the choking adult, child and infant. Bag-valve mask and AED use are also reviewed. **RENEWAL This card is valid for two years following your course completion date, to avoid a lapse in your provider status, you need to complete a renewal course PRIOR to the recommended renewal date listed on your card. Registration Information: Pre-reading is recommended. An open book exam is to be completed prior to skill session (pass 84%). *Participants: bring your current BLS card to class. (Current BLS card need to be brought to the course as proof you ve taken the full course at some time within the last 2 years). *Manuals can be signed out by calling Manuals are for SMH employees only. 13 BLS for Health Care Providers-Online Renewal Course Purpose: This option is for those needing to renew their basic life support CPR level and cannot make the scheduled renewal classes. Participants may go to the American Heart Association website and search for CPR courses and renew the course through this link. The participant then prints their certificate, contacts a certified AHA CPR instructor to be checked out of the skills portion (adult, child, infant skills for CPR and airway obstruction). An AHA certification card will be generated by SMH if material is turned into us completed. 14 Designated Requester Class (Organ Donation)-Recert & Certification Purpose: This in-service/update is provided to familiarize applicable nursing staff with the organ/tissue retrieval process and to provide guidance to nursing staff when speaking with families about donations. Target Group: Nurses who are currently designated requesters and those nurses who wish to perform this role. Facilitator: Wyoming Donor Alliance Date/Time/Location: Recert Classes Oct 7, P Paint Rock on 3 rd (SMH) Certification Class Oct 8, a Paint Rock on 3 rd (SMH) Electronic Medical Record~ EMR Basics Purpose: EMR training helps our new acute care RN staff member orient to the Electronic Medical Record s (EMR) Power Chart platform. Additional EMR education will be part of the on unit orientation with a designated Super User. This class can also be used as a refresher for those that have used the system but still want a more in-depth look at the EMRs functionality. 15 Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)-Provider Level Purpose: ENPC was developed by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) to educate registered nurses in caring for acutely ill and injured children. The course teaches participants to recognize the ill or injured child and identify significant, yet subtle changes, in the less acute child. Additionally, the course teaches all aspects of pediatric emergency nursing, including, but not limited to, pediatric trauma &/or resuscitation. Course Overview: ENPC is a 16-hour course designed to provide core-level pediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills needed to care for pediatric patients in the emergency setting. The course presents a systematic assessment model, integrates the associated anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and identifies appropriate interventions. Triage categorization and prevention strategies are included in the course content. ENPC is taught using a variety of formats including lectures and video as well as it includes skill stations that encourage participants to integrate their psychomotor abilities into a patient situation in a risk-free setting. 16 Fetal Heart Monitoring (A.W.H.O.N.N.)-Intermediate/Advanced Course These courses are designed for RNs with a minimum of six months clinical nursing experience using fetal heart monitoring technology in an intrapartum setting. Participants are expected to already possess basic knowledge and related skills in the following areas: Maternal physiologic changes of pregnancy Fetal growth and development Methods of fetal monitoring Preparation of patient for set-up and initiation of external or internal fetal monitoring Obtaining and maintaining tracings that document fetal heart rate and uterine contractions Interpretation of uterine contraction frequency, duration, and baseline resting tone Identification of the baseline fetal heart rate, variability and deviations Indicated clinical interventions Communication and documentation standards **Numbers of registrants will determine if the class is the intermediate or the advanced class. RENEWAL: To maintain competency, this course needs to be RENEWED every two years, within the calendar year that the course would expire (AWHONN standard). 17 In the Know Monthly In-service for CNAs Purpose: This monthly self-study module is available to all CNAs & other interested SMH staff. Complete the module by reading it and handing the post-test in to the drop box at the end of the hall near Pharmacy (1 st floor). 18 Moderate Sedation In-House Certification Course Purpose: This SMH in-house certification of completion course is designed to teach/review with nursing staff moderate sedation agents, monitoring principles and standards of care for patient safety. High fidelity patient simulation is used to enhance the learning experience. Our hospital s Moderate Sedation policy (PCA #780) forms the basis of the program. Completion of this course may require participants to complete a preceptored experience in the Endoscopy Department at SMH. Pre Requisite: Current BLS and ACLS or PALS certification. Target Group: RNs who administer and/or monitor patients who have had procedural sedation agents. 19 Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)-Provider Level Course/Renewal Purpose: To provide healthcare professionals the skills necessary to resuscitate a newborn infant. This is a 2-year course based on the American Heart Association standards. **RENEWAL This card is valid for two years following your course completion date, to avoid a lapse in your provider status, you need to complete a provider course PRIOR to the recommended renewal date listed on your card. Prerequisite: Pre-work is required and manuals can be signed out by calling Course components include: An exam, *taken on-line prior to the course and testing of 1 mega-code station at the conclusion of the course. Bring the PRINT OUT of the NRP test completion certificate to your class. *SMH staff-one PIN number to access the online exam will be provided to you by WHs team leader prior to your course. Any further PIN number(s) needed (eg. failure to complete/pass the test) will be charged to you ($25.00/PIN). 20 Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Course (NVCI)- Certification Purpose: This Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) program provides information on how to maintain the care, welfare, safety and security of those individuals involved in a potentially violent or violent situation. The course also includes a detailed description of SMH Restraint and Seclusion policies and the State of Wyoming s requirements for the Title 25 documentation process. Program Overview: This program teaches techniques to: Approach and reduce the tension of an agitated individual Focus on alternatives to deal with an out-of control, violent person Control your anxieties during interventions and maintain a professional attitude Maintain the safety of all involved in a crisis situation Target Group: SMH employees who work in high risk areas for encounters with aggressive or violent individuals. 21 Non-violent Crisis Intervention Course- Recertification Purpose: The NVCI recertification course is a 3-hour renewal of the information learned in the NVCI certification course. This course is for those needing to recertify their NVCI certificate (i.e. hold a valid NVCI certificate of 2 years or less). The course also includes a detailed description of SMH Restraint and Seclusion policies and the State of Wyoming s requirements for Title 25 documentation. 25 PALs-Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course-Certification Purpose: The PALs certification course is a 2 day program that focuses on the care of the acutely ill pediatric patient. PALs provider level is a 2-year course. Program Overview: Course content emphasizes the recognition and treatment of respiratory distress and cardiopulmonary failure in children. Advanced airway techniques, intravascular access techniques and pharmacology therapies are also taught in this course. Pre-Requisites: Must have a current BLS Health Care Provider level card. Prereading is required as well as completion of a pre-test via the internet. Cardiac rhythm recognition skills are necessary. 28 Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (P.E.A.R.S.) Course Overview: Taught by PALS instructors, the PEARS course is intended for healthcare providers and others who are not required to have a PALS card but who may encounter pediatric emergency situations in the course of their work. It is designed for those who infrequently see critically injured children to help them identify a pediatric victim at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress, intervene early to stabilize the child and contact the next level of care as soon as possible. Objectives: Recognize the signs of impending respiratory failure or shock Initiate the appropriate treatment Follow the recommended procedures for preventing disability and death in children Target Audience: CNAs, School Nurses, EMT-Basics, RNs who infrequently work with the pediatric patient and who are NOT required to hold a PALS or ENPC card. The workshop presents the characteristics of a good preceptor and the goals/objectives of the nurse residency program. Precepting and mentoring are a special skill set; it is different than buddying or orienting, rather it is a proactive, structured approach to guide practice and the transition of the new registered nurse to role of staff RN. 31 S.T.A.B.L.E. Course Purpose: The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program focuses exclusively on the postresuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick newborns. Course Overview: S.T.A.B.L.E. targets the post-resuscitation care of sick neonates and is, therefore, considered by many experts to be the follow-up, complementary program to the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). S.T.A.B.L.E. serves as a concise educational tool to organize the myriad of details necessary to stabilize and care for sick infants. 32 Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) - Provider Level Purpose: TNCC is a two-day course designed to provide core level trauma knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with the delivery of professional nursing care to the trauma patient. The course includes a written exam (80% pass) and testing of 3 skill stations. Upon successful course completion, participants will receive a TNCC certificate valid for 4 years. 33 Wound Care & Ostomy Care Workshop: Purpose: An overview of ostomies will be presented as well as our ostomy products and standards of care. The second part of the class, participants will learn to use national guidelines for the prevention and management of acute and chronic wounds. Pressure ulcer prevention and management will be discussed. SMH specifics, such as products used, will also be reviewed.
