4 LIFE SUPPORT TRAINING CENTER (LSTC) The LSTC at the American Hospital Dubai is proud to be the first private hospital in the UAE to be an American Heart Association (AHA) International Training Center (ITC). The LSTC offers courses in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Airway Management, Electrocardiogram, Pharmacology, Heartsaver programs and Family and Friends Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Courses are offered at the Life Support Training Center at the American Hospital Dubai. Registration for our courses are limited. 6 Basic Life Support (BLS) Description The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP) Course is a video-based, Instructor-led course that teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support. The course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, provide early use of an AED and the treatment of foreign body airway obstruction. Course Covers Key changes in basic life support reflecting the new science from the American Heart Association Critical concepts of high-quality CPR 1- and 2- rescuer CPR and AED for adult, children and infant Adult, Child and Infant Bag-mask techniques and rescue breathing Relief of choking for adult, child and infant CPR with advanced airway 3
7 Target Audience For healthcare providers such as emergency medical personnel (EMS), physicians, dentists, nurses, respiratory therapists and x-ray technologists who must have a BLS Provider card documenting successful completion of a CPR course. 8 Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Description The American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course is totally redesigned to incorporate new scientific evidence from the latest Guidelines. Through the ACLS course, healthcare providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support to patient survival, the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions, and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. Course Covers Key changes in advanced cardiac life support reflecting the new science from the American Heart Association Basic life support skills Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia Airway management Related Pharmacology Management of acute coronary syndromes and stroke Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team 5
9 Target Audience For emergency, intensive care and critical care healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may need to respond to cardiovascular or cardiopulmonary emergencies. 10 Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Description The completely redesigned American Heart Association s Pediatric Advanced Life Support course is based on new scientific evidence from the latest AHA Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) and a new teaching methodology. The goal of the PALS course is to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Objectives Key changes in pediatric advanced life support, reflecting the new science from the American Heart Association 1- and 2-rescuer child CPR and AED use 1- and 2-rescuer infant CPR Management of respiratory emergencies Rhythm disturbances and electrical therapy Vascular access Resuscitation team concept Cardiac, respiratory and shock case discussions and simulations Systematic Approach to Pediatric Assessment 7
11 Target Audience For pediatricians, emergency physicians, family practice physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies. 12 Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Description The new, extensively updated Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is based on the latest American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) /American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care: Neonatal Resuscitation Guidelines. All program components reflect the AAP/AHA guidelines with increased emphasis on evidence-based treatment recommendations, as well as the new International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) evidence-based consensus on science. Objectives Successful participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to perform or assist in the resuscitation of a neonate based upon the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) / AHA guidelines. 9
13 Target Audience For neonatologists, pediatricians, emergency physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in neonatal emergencies. 14 ECG and Pharmacology Description Specifically designed to address a key knowledge gap in Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Pharmacology, the American Heart Association s Adult ECG and Pharmacology Course is a program focused on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge. This is a pre-course option for ACLS students and other healthcare providers, and is also for ACLS students who need to improve after the ACLS precourse self-assessment test. The course is divided into two modules one for ECG and one for Pharmacology which can be taught together or separately, depending on the need. Skills taught in the ECG module include heart anatomy, basic electrophysiology, normal ECG measurements and basic arrhythmias. The Pharmacology module covers basic ACLS drugs and usage; drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies; and integrating basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms. Target Audience For a variety of healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, paramedics, residents, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical pharmacists and ECG technicians. Card Type ECG Completion Certificate, Pharmacology Completion Certificate or ECG and Pharmacology Completion Certificates Written Exam/Skills Test Multiple Choice Written Exam Instructors LSTC AHA certified instructors Length 4.5 hours for the ECG module, 2.75 hours for the Pharmacology module, and 6.25 hours for both modules 11
15 Airway Management Description The American Heart Association Airway Management Course is a unique program specifically designed to give students the opportunity to learn, practice & demonstrate many airway skills used in resuscitation. Healthcare providers whose occupation or volunteer activities require airway management skills, in addition to professionals in the field of resuscitation and airway management such as scientists, educators, researchers, and manufacturers of medical devices, may find the course beneficial. Objectives The learning model for this course includes video-guided instruction, skills practice, and testing. Airway Management includes five modules one required module and four optional - for facilitators to combine based on student need and scope of practice. The five modules are: Bag-Mask Ventilation and Airway Adjuncts (required) Laryngeal Mask Airway Esophageal-Tracheal Combitube Endotracheal Tube Impedance Threshold Device This course does not provide certification, but instead is designed solely to enhance students airway management skills. Target Audience For currently active healthcare providers whose daily occupation or volunteer activities require the knowledge and skills of airway management. Card Type This course does not provide certification Written/Skills Test Pass both the skills and written test for each module taught Instructors LSTC AHA certified instructors Length Approximately 5 hours if all five modules are taught 12
16 Heartsaver CPR and AED Description The HeartSaver AED Course teaches CPR, AED use, relief of choking in adults and children, and infant CPR and relief of choking, and use of barrier devices for all ages. Modules Available Adult CPR and AED use Optional: Child CPR, AED use and choking Infant CPR & Chocking Target Audience For those who have a duty to respond (First Responders, Teachers, Nursery School Teachers, Teachers Aids, Security Guards) to a cardiac emergency because of work related responsibilities or regulatory requirements. 13

18 HeartCode BLS Part 1 Description HeartCode is a Web-based, self-paced instructional program that uses esimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare setting. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning. After completing the cognitive portion of the course, students practice and test their skills with an AHA instructor. Course Covers Key changes in basic life support, reflecting the latest American Heart Association guidelines Five BLS patient cases, presented through esimulation technology Critical concepts in high-quality CPR Chain of Survival One-rescuer CPR and AED for adults, children and infants Two-rescuer CPR and AED for adults, children and infants Bag-mask techniques for adults, children and infants Rescue breathing for adults, children ad infants Relief of choking for adults, children and infants CPR with advanced airway 15

20 HeartCode ACLS Part 1 Description HeartCode is a Web-based, self-paced instructional program that uses esimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision making and skills development. Upon successful completion of the cognitive and skills tests, students receive a course completion card. Course Covers Key changes reflecting the latest American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Ten adult patient cases with up to four healthcare providers, presented through esimulation technology: One BLS case Seven cases representing cardiovascular, respiratory and stroke emergencies Two Megacodes Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest Recognition and early management of periarrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia Airway management Related pharmacology Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team 17
21 Target Audience HeartCode ACLS Part 1 is for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies, specifically those seeking an alternative (nonclassroom) method for completing an initial or update ACLS Course. To be successful in any ACLS course, students should be able to identify ECG rhythms and should know pharmacology specific to cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies before beginning the course. It is strongly recommended that students review the ACLS course materials contained within the program and complete the Precourse Self-Assessment prior to attempting the patient cases. 22 Family and Friends CPR Description The Family & Friends CPR program teaches how to perform CPR in adults, children, or infants and how to help an adult, child, or infant who is choking. Modules Available Adult/Child CPR and Choking Optional: Child CPR and chocking Infant CPR and Choking Target Audience Family members, friends, nannies and members of the general community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. This program also can be a non-credentialed option for middle and high-school students.
