Emergency and Trauma Outreach Symposium Various dates and locations Colorado (CME, CNE and EMS credit) This symposium, for physicians, nurses, pre-hospital providers and other healthcare team members, provides updates on pediatric emergency medicine, trauma, burn and pre-hospital care. Workshops integrating simulation and debriefing enhance learning at case-based skill stations. Good Grief at Noon February 11, May 13, August 12, November 11 (Noon-1 pm; No CE credit) These multidisciplinary sessions focus on various bereavementrelated topics and are open to all staff. Nursing Grand Rounds* (4th Wednesday, 11:30 am-12:30 pm) (CNE credit) Scholarly presentations highlight state-of-the-art care for children and families achieved through nursing research and evidence-based practice. * This program is videoconferenced to selected sites (two-way live interaction). 3 2014 CONTINUING EDUCATION CALENDAR CHILDREN S HOSPITAL COLORADO JANUARY 15th Eliza Fernie Pediatric Critical Care Symposium JANUARY AURORA, CO (CNE Credit) This two-day conference is designed to enhance the knowledge of nurses, respiratory therapists, pre-hospital providers and other health care providers regarding current trends and innovations in neonatal, cardiac and pediatric critical care. Emergency Medical Services Pediatric Conference JANUARY AURORA, CO (CNE and EMS credit) This conference is specifically for EMS providers of all levels (EMT, EMT-I, P, CCP, RT, RN). The two-day conference, with optional PALS and NRP skills renewal, provides attendees pediatric continuing education hours that satisfy national registry and state of Colorado recertification requirements. FEBRUARY 17th Annual Perioperative Services Workshop FEBRUARY 22 AURORA, CO (CNE credit) Clinical updates in the management of various pediatric surgical diagnoses will be reviewed with the aim of enhancing the knowledge and skills of perioperative nursing and sterile processing staff during pre-, intra- and post-operative phases of a surgical or other sedation procedure. MARCH Neonatal Resuscitation Program Hospital-Based Instructor Course MARCH 6 AURORA, CO (CME and CNE credit) The NRP Hospital-Based Instructor Course is an interactive, hands-on and team oriented course that incorporates scientific evidence and educational methodologies from the Neonatal Resuscitation Textbook, 6th edition. Instructor development, skills for effective teams and interactive learning with simulation and debriefing will be emphasized. The course is open to new instructor candidates and current NRP instructors who wish to update themselves on the revised NRP curriculum. Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and respiratory therapists who have experience in the hospital care of newborns in the delivery room, newborn nursery or neonatal ICU and, ideally, have ongoing delivery room experience and current educational or clinical responsibility within a hospital setting, are eligible to apply. Participants take the online examination, review the NRP Instructor DVD and complete the instructor manual self-assessment prior to the course. 3rd Annual Clinical Concepts and Conundrums in Pediatric Hospital Medicine MARCH 7 AURORA, CO (CME credit) This course is designed for all health care professionals who participate in the care and management of sick children and neonates. A case-based format will be used to review and discuss the clinical etiology, diagnosis, and management of critically ill infants and children. Neonatal Resuscitation Program Regional Trainer Video Conference MARCH 13 VIDEO CONFERENCE (No CE credit) The NRP Regional Trainer is responsible for facilitating system/regional NRP implementation, training hospital-based instructors, regional trainers and NRP providers as needed, and providing a crucial link between local programs and the NRP Steering Committee. Regional Trainer candidates who have successfully completed a 6th edition NRP Hospital-Based Instructor Course are eligible to apply. APRIL 4th Annual Pediatric Advanced Practice Conference APRIL 7-8 AURORA, CO (CME credit, CNE credit through CU College of Nursing, ACPE through CU School of Pharmacy) This annual conference is co-sponsored by Children s Hospital Colorado, the CU College of Nursing Office of Lifelong Learning, and the CU SKAGGS School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences CPE Office, with support from the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). Topics focus on pediatric clinical updates and sub-specialty content for the advanced practice nurse, physician assistant and pharmacist in primary, urgent and acute care settings. Interdisciplinary presenters provide a unique dialogue on managing challenging cases. 7th Annual Reach the Peak Asthma Educator-Certified (AE-C) Prep Course APRIL AURORA, CO (CNE credit) The AE-C Prep Course is facilitated by leading experts in their field. This two-day comprehensive course will prepare participants to improve asthma care in their practice while equipping them to successfully complete the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) AE-C exam. The course includes a combination of lecture, case scenarios, hands-on device technique and spirometry. Small group strategizing for pediatric and adult practice improvement will also be offered. Colorado Chapter, AAP Annual Conference APRIL 12 DENVER, CO (CME credit) This conference provides state-of-the-art reviews of selected topics in pediatrics for pediatricians, family practitioners and other health professionals who care for infants, children and youth. Children s Orthopedic Day APRIL 18 AURORA, CO (CME credit) The conference brings together distinguished visiting faculty within the orthopedic field. The day is designed with lectures and research case presentations of interest to surgeons, researchers and other allied health professionals whose practice includes orthopedic disorders. Annual Conference on Language and Learning APRIL 25 AURORA, CO (ASHA credit) This conference is designed for speech-language pathologists, learning specialists, special educators, psychologists and teachers. MAY The Rosenberry Conference MAY 2 AURORA, CO (CME credit) This annual behavioral health conference hosts prominent visiting faculty. Topics address a variety of pediatric and adolescent therapy practices. The day is designed with lectures of interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and family therapists. 35th Annual Perinatal Clinical Update MAY 8-9 AURORA, CO AND VIDEO CONFERENCE SITES (CNE credit) Assessment, stabilization and acute care of the high-risk pregnant woman, fetus and newborn infant are highlighted. Perinatal nurses, nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists working in maternal/fetal services, well-baby and critical care nurseries will find this two-day program invaluable. 38th Annual Conference District VIII Section on Perinatal Pediatrics MAY 29-JUNE 1 DENVER, CO (CME and CNE credit) The scope of this conference encompasses a broad range of topics including fetal evaluation and therapies, neonatal hypoglycemia, neonatal respiratory distress, ethical considerations for fetal therapies and medical improvement practices. All perinatal providers are encouraged to attend, including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, midwives, respiratory therapists, fellows, residents and students caring for mothers and fragile newborns. JUNE 30th Annual Community and School Health / Pediatric Telephone Triage Conference JUNE AURORA, CO AND VIDEO CONFERENCE SITES (CNE credit) Infants, children and youth with increasingly complex health needs continue to transition back to their communities. This year s conference emphasizes these needs and the value of family and community as an integral part of the healthcare team. Through lectures and case presentations, the knowledge and skills necessary for an integrated approach to care in community, healthcare and school settings is discussed. Pediatric community and school nurses and other healthcare providers, including hospital, ambulatory, community health and telephone triage nurses, care coordinators and case managers are encouraged to attend.

4 4th Annual Neonatal Advanced Practice Conference JUNE 19 AURORA, CO AND VIDEO CONFERENCE SITES (CME and CNE credit) This annual conference provides current clinical information for practice strategies related to the anticipation, recognition, assessment, stabilization, and acute and long-term care of the neonate. The education sessions are designed for neonatal nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, NICU nurses and other health care professionals caring for neonates and their families. JULY 32nd Annual Pediatric Infectious Diseases Conference JULY 27-AUGUST 1 VAIL, CO (CME and AAFP credit) This conference examines topics of interest to general pediatricians, family practice and infectious disease specialists. Speakers, selected for their specialty interest, reputation, communication skills and enthusiasm, cover up-to-date information on pediatric infectious diseases. SEPTEMBER 21st Annual Abby Stoddard Lectureship SEPTEMBER AURORA, CO (CME credit) Case discussions and presentations in pediatric neurology featuring recognized experts are incorporated in this two-day lectureship for all providers caring for the pediatric population with developmental delay and/or neurological conditions. Partners in Pediatric Surgical Care SEPTEMBER 19 AURORA, CO (CME credit) The annual Partners in Pediatric Surgical Care conference presents and discusses complex surgical issues that can have profound outpatient ramifications for primary care providers. This program is of interest to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other health professionals who work in the primary care setting. 10th Annual Cardiac Kids Parent Conference Growing Up with Congenital Heart Disease SEPTEMBER 27 AURORA, CO (No CE credit) Issues and challenges in caring for children with congenital heart disease as they grow up are explored at this conference by parents and the healthcare team. OCTOBER Pediatric Urology for the Primary Care Provider OCTOBER 3 AURORA, CO (CME and AAFP credit) Through lectures and clinical cases, this clinical update enhances the knowledge and skills necessary for primary care providers to care for patients with common pediatric urological problems. Updated information is provided on the initial management and when specialized pediatric urological care is needed. 37th Annual L. Joseph Butterfield Perinatal Conference OCTOBER 9 (EVENING)-10 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (CNE credit) This conference provides a forum for perinatal nurses and other maternal/ newborn health providers to address issues pertinent to maternal/fetal, neonatal and follow-up care. Held at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort, attendees have the opportunity to learn, contribute and network in a beautiful and relaxed environment. Preparation Course for the Pediatric Critical Care RN Certification Exam OCTOBER 16 AND 23 AURORA, CO (CNE credit) This two-day course is recommended for nurses desiring to take the Pediatric CCRN exam offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). The exam covers a broad area of practice and content is based on the Synergy Model. 6th Annual Nursing Research and Evidenced-Based Practice Poster Fair OCTOBER AURORA, CO (No CE credit) Held in conjunction with the annual O Neil Pediatric Clinical Update, this Poster Fair illustrates and celebrates Nursing s spirit of inquiry related to evidencedbased clinical practice, education and research. 23rd Annual O Neil Pediatric Clinical Update OCTOBER AURORA, CO AND VIDEO CONFERENCE SITES (CNE credit) Held in conjunction with the Nursing Research and Evidenced-Based Practice Poster Fair, this conference focuses on common pediatric conditions and current child health issues. Nurses, EMS providers, respiratory therapists and other interested healthcare providers in the community, ambulatory and inpatient settings are challenged to consider evidence-based practice changes. Rocky Mountain Society of Adolescent Health Medicine Hot Topics in Adolescent Medicine 2014 OCTOBER 24 AURORA, CO (CME credit) This conference addresses current hot topics in the care of the adolescent and is targeted towards multi-disciplinary professionals caring for teens, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists and other allied health professionals. 6th Annual Conference on Pediatric Acute Illness and Injury OCTOBER 30 AURORA, CO (CME and CNE credit) Education regarding state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of acute medical and surgical conditions commonly encountered in the pediatric urgent care setting is provided. This program is of interest to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other health professionals who manage acute illness and injury. NOVEMBER 2nd Annual William K. Frankenburg Lectureship NOVEMBER 7 AURORA, CO (CME credit) Recognized experts in the field of community focused developmental and behavioral pediatric problems will lead this interactive workshop, which includes presentations and case discussions. Pediatric Infectious Diseases in Colorado: Update 2014 NOVEMBER 12 AURORA, CO (CME and AAFP credit) This conference provides updates on pediatric infectious disease issues that have direct relevance to physicians, child health associates, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Pediatric Orthopedics for the Primary Care Provider NOVEMBER 14 AURORA, CO (CME and AAFP credit) Focusing on the acute management of pediatric orthopedic conditions, this conference addresses current clinical issues that face the primary care provider daily. Through lectures and workshops, clinical updates enhance the knowledge and skills necessary for the primary care provider and allied health professional to care for patients with orthopedic disorders. Colorado Pediatric Trauma Conference 2014 NOVEMBER AURORA, CO (CME, CNE and EMS credit) Providing education regarding state-of-the-art care of the pediatric trauma patient, this conference is ideal for nurses, physicians, EMS providers and respiratory therapists. LIFE SUPPORT STANDARDIZED COURSES Life Support Courses website: childrenscolorado.org/lst Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Course (AAFP credit) ACLS emphasizes the integration of effective basic life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation with advanced cardiovascular life support, and recognition and initial treatment of the stroke victim. This is done through lecture, videos and hands-on participation. Evaluation is completed by clinical scenario management and written test. Students must bring a copy of the pre-course assessment and current ACLS Provider manual to the course for reference. January 15-16, February 5-6, March 11-12, April 2-3, May 28-29, July 16-17, September 17-18, November Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Traditional Renewal Course (No CE credit) The ACLS traditional renewal course format is a single day lecture, video and hands-on skills/evaluation course. Participants must hold a current ACLS Provider card and bring a copy of their pre-course assessment, current card and current ACLS provider manual to be admitted to the course. 5 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) HeartCode Renewal Skills Testing Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) HeartCode Provider Course (CME, CNE and EMS credit through AHA) (CME, CNE and EMS credit through AHA) The ACLS HeartCode Skills Testing is the second step to the completion of the ACLS HeartCode online course. Participants demonstrate hands-on skills with a certified ACLS instructor. Completion of Part 1 is mandatory prior to attending. Participants must bring a copy of their current ACLS provider card to participate in the skills testing. Using the PALS HeartCode online course along with skill stations and the team concept, participants focus on a systematic approach to resuscitation of an infant or child during the PALS Provider Course. Evaluation is completed by clinical scenario management. Basic Life Support is recommended, but not required. January 7, March 6, May 8, July 8, September 9, November 6 January 14, February 18, April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15, August 19, September 16, October 21, November 18 Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) (CNE credit from ENA) Knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency care for children are emphasized in this provider course developed by the Emergency Nurses Association. March 4-5, June 5-6, September Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider Course (CME, CNE, CRCE and EMS credit through AAP for online exam) The NRP Provider Course, a program of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, is an interactive course focusing on knowledge acquisition, skill demonstration, skill integration, low-fidelity simulation and debriefing. The NRP Provider Course is designed for health care professionals involved in any aspect of neonatal resuscitation, including pre-hospital emergency personnel, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, advanced practice nurses, nurse midwives, licensed midwives, respiratory care practitioners and other health care professionals who provide direct care during neonatal resuscitation. Learners self-study the cognitive portions and pass the entire online examination within 30 days prior to the course. Cards for successful completion are provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
