4 About Learning at WellStar About Organizational Learning (OL) Organizational Learning, a division of Human Resources, is responsible for the development and training of team members across WellStar. How Learning at WellStar Works At WellStar, our goal is to provide learning to help you achieve and maintain competence in your current position, advance in your career and, where possible, earn continuing education credit. While many of the courses offered remain the same, learning opportunities and courses are added throughout the year based on your needs and the strategic goals of WellStar. In addition, we provide consultative services for designing and implementing learning. Our Courses We provide formal and informal learning methods, which focus on adult learning principles. Courses are offered in a variety of formats including instructor-led, elearning, self-paced and blended learning. Whenever possible, hands-on learning techniques are utilized including preceptorships, patient simulation technology, simulated work environment and skills labs. Real-time course offerings can be located in SuccessFactors Learning (SFL). For more information on how to locate and register for courses, please refer to the Managing Your Learning section located on page 7 of this guide. Course Registration Pre-registration is required for all programs. Registering in advance ensures that we make appropriate accommodations based on the anticipated class size and also allows us to contact you if the course is changed or cancelled for any other reason. Courses are registered through SuccessFactors Learning (SFL). Please be sure to check SFL for specific details regarding course dates, time and locations. 5 About Learning at WellStar Summer 2014 Getting Credit for Your Learning by Documenting Your Participation To get credit for your learning, make sure to follow the course directions for sign in. If you re signing in by writing, write legibly and provide your team member I.D. number. No credit can be given without this information. Course Cancellation Policy In order to use our resources wisely, Organizational Learning reserves the right to cancel courses due to low registration, in the event of inclement weather or other emergencies. In the event a course is canceled due to low registration, participants will be notified. In the event of inclement weather or other emergencies, team members can receive up to date information by calling Organizational Learning at to verify that a course will be held. If a team member registers for a course and can no longer attend, it is their responsibility to ensure they cancel or withdraw their registration in SFL. Step by step instructions for canceling or withdrawing from a course can be found on page 10. Time and Location Information The time and location for each course can be found in SFL. At times, we are asked to change the time and/or location of a course to accommodate space needs at a WellStar facility. When changes are made, registered participants will be notified as early as possible. Registered participants should check their To Do list in SuccessFactors Learning or may call if they wish to verify the time and location of a course. If a team member is attending a course at the WellStar Development Center (WDC), they should check the digital signs located throughout the WDC for their specific room assignments. All scheduled events occurring at the WDC will be listed on these signs. 6 OUR FACILITIES WellStar Development Center The WellStar Development Center (WDC) has over 22,000 square feet of event space in support of WellStar s meeting and training needs. The WDC houses over 18 conference and classrooms, 13 technology training rooms, two auditoriums, a patient simulation center and a simulated work environment. All rooms at the WDC can be reserved through Outlook. Patient Simulation WellStar s Advanced Patient Simulation Center uses high-fidelity patient simulators placed in realistic hospital settings to produce a real-life environment for learning. This state-of-the-art center is comprised of patient simulation rooms, including a critical care room, a labor and delivery suite, two acute care rooms and an operating room skills lab. The rooms house WellStar s family of simulators that are used to replicate clinical scenarios in order to teach clinical as well as team skills, such as a myocardial ischemia/infarction, asthma exacerbation, a pneumothorax, diabetic ketoacidosis or a shoulder dystocia. The simulators include two adult males, one female (birthing), and one neonate. In addition, there are three debriefing rooms where students discuss the events of the clinical scenarios, which encourages collaboration and group communication. 15 Clinical Course Offerings Organizational Learning strives to provide learning opportunities for all clinical disciplines in order to ensure the competent and safe care of our patients. With support from clinicians and unit- and department-based educators across WellStar, Organizational Learning assesses learning needs, organizes and conducts learning and evaluates learning outcomes. Organizational Learning offers many courses intended to bring members of various clinical disciplines together to learn. Joint Commission and others have suggested that interprofessional learning learning that bridges across the clinical disciplines promotes patient safety and quality care by fostering an environment that encourages trust, teamwork and communication. Acute Deterioration This course provides an extensive overview of pathophysiology that causes patients to deteriorate. Early sign and symptoms, pre-emptive interventions, and co-morbidity leading to patient deterioration are examined and discussed. Target Audience: Nursing staff including acute care, intermediate case, intensive care, PACU, ED and procedural areas Duration: 7 hours Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) HeartCode ACLS HeartCode (Online) is an interactive self-directed learning program, which completes all cognitive requirements for the American Heart Association ACLS Course. ACLS HeartCode includes all of the exams required for successful completion of the ACLS curriculum. ACLS HeartCode includes: ten interactive patient scenarios, pre-course self-assessment, team dynamics lesson, and full texts of the ACLS Provider Manual, 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC, and ACLS Core Drugs. Target Audience: Healthcare Professionals who respond to emergency cardiovascular situations Duration: Self-Paced varies per participant (Manager Approval Required) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) First Timer Putting It All Together Course This course is a Supplement to the ACLS HeartCode Online Course for individuals who are interested in developing confidence and competence in ACLS with a focus on teamwork. This course incorporates interactive learning stations followed by interprofessional simulations designed to mimic real live code teams and responses. Prerequisites include: completing Heart- Code ACLS Part 1 Online (Must bring certificate to gain access into class); Being familiar with the ACLS Algorithms; Studying the ACLS manual; and Being able to identify Basic Heart Rhythms. Target Audience: Healthcare professionals taking ACLS for the first time Duration: 4 hours (Manager Approval Required) The ALSO Program (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an interprofessional course that helps physicians, midwives and labor and delivery nurses develop and maintain the knowledge and skills to manage perinatal urgencies and emergencies; with an emphasis on teamwork. 16 AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring This program provides a comprehensive and intensive review of fetal monitoring concepts and assessment of the knowledge and skills of experienced perinatal nurses. Participants will analyze case scenarios using key physiologic principles; recognize, analyze and respond to complex fetal heart rate patterns, uterine activity and understand their implications for fetal wellbeing; and use NICHD terminology for clear interpretation and charting. Each offers didactic demonstration, testing, and skills practice. Target Audience: Nurses with a minimum of 6 months clinical experience using fetal heart monitoring technology in an intrapartum setting and those who work in antepartum Duration: Two, 8 hour days AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring Building on the skills and knowledge gained in the Intermediate FHM, the Advanced FHM conveys the application of advanced fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills in intrapartum clinical practice. Using a case study approach to focus on the analysis of complicated FHM patterns/characteristics and related case information. Emphasis is placed on underlying maternal-fetal physiology, instrumentation interpretation intervention, verbal and written communication skills, and risk management principles. Target Audience: Clinicians who have successfully completed the Intermediate FHM course Basic 12 Lead This interactive course provides an overview of 12 lead EKG interpretations in the presence of ischemia and acute myocardial infarction (MI), recognition of basic dysrhythmias, clinical implications and review of related ACLS algorithms. Target Audience: Healthcare professionals who perform 12 lead EKGs Duration: 4 hours (Manager Approval Required) Basic Cardiac Pharmacology (MU-75) This course is guided by WellStar s Medication Usage Policy #75 (MU-75). It consists of class instruction, discussion, and testing addresses the fundamental administration principals of intravenous (IV) cardiovascular medications. Target Audience: Registered Nurses administering cardiac medications Duration: 3 hours (Manager Approval Required) Basic Dysrhythmia Interpretation (Cardiology 101) This interactive course provides a comprehensive overview with practice sessions of basic cardiac rhythms and electrocardiogram interpretation. A written exam posted to SuccessFactors will be completed at the participants own pace. Credit will be given once the exam is complete. Prior knowledge of cardiac physiology helpful. Target Audience: Licensed and unlicensed healthcare personnel. Appropriate for beginners and as an in-depth review for experienced personnel. (Manager Approval Required) Basic Life Support (BLS) HeartCode BLS HeartCode HCP (Online) is an interactive self-directed learning program, which completes all cognitive requirements for the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers. BLS HeartCode HCP includes: BLS Lessons, two interactive patient scenarios, one adult and one infant case, and the full text of the AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers Manual. Target Audience: All team member that provide direct patient care Duration: Self-Paced varies per participant (Manager Approval Required) Care of Advanced Cardiac Patient (Cardiology 102) This course provides a comprehensive overview of cardiovascular diseases, cardiovascular pharmacology, diagnostic studies, 16 Your Opportunity to Learn and Grow

Target Audience: All Nurses Duration: 1.5 days (Manager Approval Required) Charge Nurse Immersion The purpose of this course is to introduce the new charge nurse to the concepts of delegation, scheduling, bed flow, effective communication, conflict resolution, decision-making, roles and responsibilities. Target Audience: Those new to the role of charge nurse Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) is an in-depth training in nonviolent physical interventions for staff that care for patients with potential or actual violent/self-destructive behavior. The philosophy of this program is to provide the best Care, Welfare, Safety and Security for patients and staff. Target Audience: Clinical team member in the ED, Behavioral Health, Security, and areas involving high risk violent or selfdestructive behavior Duration: Initial and non-contact courses are 6 hours. Refresher course is 4 hours. Critical Care Fellowship The Critical Care Fellowship is for new graduate and experienced RNs hired into a critical care setting. Content includes face-toface didactic instruction, high-fidelity patient simulation, and 69 hours of CNE online modules developed by AACN (Association of Critical Care Nurses). Target Audience: Critical Care nurses Duration: Six, 4 hour sessions taken over a six month period Registration Method: Registration available through Manager/Educator ED Fellowship This course is designed for nurses who are new to Emergency Nursing or newly graduated and practicing in the Emergency Department. This is a blended learning opportunity, which includes the ENA s on line emergency nursing curriculum, core skills, workshops, and advanced patient simulation. The goal of this course is to augment the orientation of nurses to the practice of Emergency Nursing. Target Audience: Emergency Department nurses Duration: Varies Registration Method: Registration available through Manager/Educator Educator Immersion The Educator Immersion Course is designed to help educators new to their role understand their role as a unit-based educator in facilitating adult learning through learning needs assessment, planning, and evaluation. Educators are encouraged to bring a learning activity/project to work on during the workshop as a means to experiment and practice assessment, diagnosis, and identification of educational outcomes, planning, implementation, and evaluation methodologies. Target Audience: New unit-based educators Duration: Five, 8 hour days (Manager Approval Required) Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) The Emergency Nurses Association developed the Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) to improve the care of the pediatric patient by increasing the competence and confidence of the nurse working in the emergency department. This course provides core-level pediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills needed to care for pediatric patients in the emergency care setting. Target Audience: Registered Nurses (RN s). Other health care providers may attend the course as observers. 18 Registration Method: Registration available through Manager/ Educator Heart Failure: A Baseline Education for Nurses This course is designed to provide nurses with a baseline education to effectively care for our patients with heart failure. Instructors utilize lecture as well as case study discussions, concept mapping and interactive computer-based learning to enhance participants knowledge of the pathophysiology and treatment of heart failure. Target Audience: Registered Nurses Registration Method: Success Factors Learning (Manager Approval Required) Introduction to Electronic Fetal Monitoring This online program prepares the learner to interpret FHM data, implement and evaluate interventions to support maternal and fetal well-being. The five sections cover overview of maternal-fetal physiology, uterine and fetal assessments, fetal monitoring modalities, and interpretation and clinical interventions and risk management strategies. Target Audience: Labor & Delivery nurses Duration: Self-Paced varies per participant Learn Rhythm Adult An online, self-directed course that introduces healthcare providers to normal cardiac rhythms and prepares them to recognize basic cardiac arrhythmias in clinical practice. Electrocardiogram (ECG) rhythm recognition is a key skill required to be successful in determining a patient s condition and knowing which treatment algorithm to apply. This course allows healthcare Providers to gain proficiency in ECG rhythm recognition in an effort to provide better treatment and improve patient outcomes. May be taken in lieu of Basic Dysrhythmia Interpretation for the experienced, independent learner. Target Audience: Licensed and unlicensed healthcare personnel. Appropriate for beginners and as an in-depth review for experienced personnel. 18 Duration: Self-Paced varies per participant Registration Method: Registration available through Manager/ Educator Legal Issues in Nursing What legal support is available to me as a WellStar nurse? What laws and legal principles relate to my practice as a nurse? A representative from WellStar risk management shares how the risk management department, including the incident reporting process and risk management response resources. During this class, legal myths are dispelled and the real facts regarding law related to nursing, governing boards, proactive charting, and the updated informed consent law are presented. Target Audience: Registered nurses within the WellStar Health System. Medical Terminology Bringing medical terminology to life, this online module provides students a fun, visual way to review medical vocabulary and apply it to the healthcare setting. Hundreds of interactive exercises make it easier to learn and memorize medical terms, and narrated animations and slide shows demonstrate concepts that are difficult to explain with just static print. After each section, a quiz lets students assess their progress. Target Audience: All team members Duration: Self-Paced varies per participant Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) NRP is designed for healthcare professionals caring for women and/or newborns. All participants perform independent skills stations followed by a team simulation and debriefing. All participants must pass the online NRP 6th edition examination within 30 days before attending the class. Please print a copy of your completed examination and bring it to with you. You will receive an detailing instructions for completion of the online exam 30 days prior to your scheduled date. 19 Clinical Course Offerings Summer 2014 Duration: 4 hours (Manager Approval Required) OB Fellowship This blended learning opportunity combines monthly didactic sessions, core skills workshops, and advanced patient simulation over their first year of experience. Key components of the AWHONN Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (PEOP) are used as the theoretical framework to accompany the guided clinical experience on the employee s unit. Target Audience: New RN graduates and RN s with no prior Labor & Delivery experience Duration: 1 year Registration Method: Registration available through Manager/ Educator Patient Care Orientation Patient Care Orientation (PCO) is a comprehensive and interactive orientation designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of Healthcare Professionals and clinical support personnel. This program covers key patient concepts, nursing standards and clinical documentation that include but are not limited to the following: National Patient Safety Goal Patient & Family Centered Care Hospital Acquired Conditions Laboratory Services & Basic Phlebotomy Rapid Response & Codes Core Measures Target Audience: Anyone who participates in the development and maintenance of patient plan of care. 20 Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) PEARS teach participants how to recognize respiratory distress, shock and cardiac arrest, and provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes of response until the child is transferred to an advanced life support provider. The goal of PEARS is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Target Audience: Healthcare providers such as emergency medical technicians (EMTs), medical and surgical nurses, school nurses and any other healthcare provider who infrequently sees critically ill infants and children. (Manager Approval Required) Preceptor Course This course is targeted for employees who orient newly hired team members and prepares the preceptor to create an effective work and learning environment for the new team member. The content includes; adult learning principles, communication skills, reality shock, delegation, critical thinking skills and an overview of documentation tools. Target Audience: Employees who are selected by their managers to orient new team members (Manager Approval Required) RN Residency Program The Registered Nurse (RN) Residency program is an investment in the future of nursing practice across the system that requires commitment and dedication from its newly graduated RN participants. RN Residents are required to complete all associated projects, prep work and modules as well as participate in all Residency and Fellowship sessions. New Graduate RNs are accepted into the program twice per year in May and October. The RN Residents also complete an evidence-based project with the ultimate goal of implementing changes in bedside care practices that lead to improved patient outcome.
