Partnering to increase student success and retention: THE REDIRECT MODEL A presentation by Karine Lacoste, Henry Decock and Alice Pitt 13 th Annual Conference of the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students Atlanta, Georgia, USA, February 4 th, 2015
Overview of presentation Relationship between Seneca College & York University The redirect model Definitions, goals and key ingredients How does the model work Implications Preliminary results What s next?
Seneca College One of the largest college in Canada 22,000 full time students 25,000 part time students 5 major campuses: Newhnam (Toronto) Seneca@York (Toronto) Markham (York Region) King City (York Region) Peterborough 5 Faculties 12 Baccalaureate degrees Seneca College sends the greatest number of students to university in the greater Toronto area and the #1 destination is York University
York University Canada's third largest comprehensive university 44,000 full time students 9,000 part time students 2 campuses Keele campus (Toronto) Glendon (Bi-lingual, Toronto) 11 Faculties York is one of the biggest receivers of transfer students in Ontario and the majority of transfer students come from Seneca
Student mobility within the partnership More than 20,000 students moving between the two institutions in the last 13 years. 12,000 students 8,000 students
Why we do business together? Complementary experience and expertise in education College applied knowledge, hands-on skills University theoretical knowledge, critical thinking skills Geographic proximity Student interest for both college and university credentials Job market needs for employers with more comprehensive sets of skills and knowledge Responding to government priorities for Post-Secondary attainment
Organization & spirit of the partnership
The redirect model
Aim of the redirect model Increase retention of students within the York Seneca universe Increase chances of academic success of students throughout their studies Provide students with a more accessible and successful pathway to degree completion
Basic ingredients / Favourable context Existing transfer pathway between two partners/programs Programs with different admission requirements Difficulty of students to meet admission requirements or to maintain academic progression requirements Partners willing to redirect students as an alternate solution
Definitions Redirect upon application: Offering university applicants not meeting admission requirements the opportunity to begin studies in a specific college program which articulates back into the university degree program the student had initially applied for. Redirect of students in academic difficulty: Offering university students who are facing academic difficulties the opportunity to pursue their studies in a specific college program which articulates back into the university degree program the student was required to leave.
1. Redirect upon application How does it work?
Existing pathway Bachelor of Arts degree program Yr 1 Yr 2 Yr 3 Yr 4 BA Honours Students having successfully completed the college diploma transfer with 48 transfer credits + 12 credits completed at YorkU Applicants to Seneca College Courses at Seneca Courses at Seneca and YorkU College Diploma Liberal Arts 2 yr diploma program
Redirect pathway Bachelor of Arts degree program Applicants to York University Yr 1 Yr 2 Yr 3 Yr 4 BA Honours Applicants in the 63-67% range receive a redirect offer Courses at Seneca Courses at Seneca and YorkU Students that had received a redirect offer and that meet the admission requirements are granted direct entry and have a seat in the program of the redirect offer College Diploma Liberal Arts 2 yr diploma program *Pilot project launched Spring 2014
2. Redirect of students in academic difficulty How does it work?
Existing pathway Accounting 2 yr diploma program Applicants to Seneca College Courses at Seneca Courses at Seneca College Diploma Summer Bridging Program Students having successfully completed the college diploma and the university summer bridging program are granted 60 credits upon admission Yr 1 Yr 2 Yr 3 Yr 4 BAS Honours Bachelor of Administrative Studies Specialized Honours degree program in Accounting
Redirect pathway Accelerated Accounting diploma program Courses at Seneca College Diploma Applicants required to withdraw receive a redirect offer and advanced standing for courses passed Applicants to York University Summer Bridging Program Students having successfully completed the college diploma and the university summer bridging program are granted 60 credits upon admission Yr 1 Yr 2 Yr 3 Yr 4 BAS Honours Bachelor of Administrative Studies Specialized Honours degree program in Accounting *Proposed pilot project expected to be launched this spring
Administrative implications For the University: Manual identification of redirect candidates Redirect offer / student advising For the College: Implementation of a direct application for redirect candidates Manual processing of redirect applications For both Partners: Alignment of information sent to student by both Partners Data-sharing: Exchange of student information between Partners
Some preliminary results for the «Redirect upon application» pilot 18% of students having received a redirect offer from YorkU applied to Seneca College (n=207) 71% of redirects having applied to Seneca College were still registered after day 10 of semester 1(n=38) 74% redirects are presently enrolled in semester 2 of the Liberal Arts diploma program and are getting ready to start courses at YorkU next summer (n=27) Difficulties encountered up to date. Expected timelines
Next steps Launch of Redirect of students in academic difficulty pilot project Address implementation issues of Redirect upon application pilot project in anticipation of second cohort of redirects Develop an electronic exchange platform to reduce manual processing and allow for greater volume Continue documenting pilot projects and academic progression of students to evaluate potential and implications of implementing at a larger scale
Take home message The redirect model allows College-University Partners to: 1) Offer non-admitted applicants and struggling students an alternate pathway that allows them to be in the academic environment most suited for them to succeed so that they can stay motivated, engaged and graduate with a post-secondary credential; 2) Maximize the potential to retain students in a well-articulated, bidirectional learning environment rather than losing them to other competing institutions.
