Founded in 1856, Albright College celebrates more than a century and a half of a rich academic heritage in the liberal arts and professions and a dynamic, welcoming and collaborative campus community. On 118 tree-lined acres, Albright is a place that connects people in an open, down-to-earth, collaborative community. With 1,660 traditional undergraduate students, Albright s small size ensures a 12:1 student/faculty ratio, close student/faculty relationships and an emphasis on the whole individual. Collaboration both in and outside of the classroom means students have extraordinary opportunities to work with, communicate with, and learn -- not only from faculty but many others with different perspectives and experiences. At Albright, students have the ability to connect fields of study to create an individualized education. Today s complex world demands the special perspective gained from an education that crosses boundaries to link knowledge, ideas, people and possibilities. Flexible thinkers, open to new ideas and able to communicate, are in demand in the job market. Connecting your interests and fields of learning can lead to new career possibilities. At Albright, more than half of all students opt for combined or interdisciplinary majors -- and still graduate in four years. In fact, in any given year, students create more than 200 different combinations of majors. But whether you select a single major or combine fields of study, you will find that Albright faculty works closely with every student to create an individualized education that reflects individual talents, interests and career goals. Albright offers more than 50 areas of study, a broad range of interdisciplinary programs including digital media, information systems, optics, Latin American studies, psychobiology, biochemistry, and environmental studies, and combined concentrations such as music/business for those interested in careers in the music industry. Albright s long tradition of excellence in the natural sciences and pre-professional programs continues to prepare graduates for medical, dental and veterinary school. Explore Everything Albright Has to Offer About Albright Campus life at Albright is enriched by 23 varsity sports, including a new lacrosse program, and more than 80 student organizations. Albright sponsors 23 sports teams on the varsity level, 11 for men and 12 for women, with more than 30 percent participation of the student body in intercollegiate athletics. The College also supports varsity cheerleading, four established club teams (deck hockey, men s and women s rugby, badminton, and ultimate frisbee) and a wide variety of seasonal intramurals. Albright is a member of the 16-team Middle Atlantic Conference, one of the nation s strongest NCAA Division III conferences. Because of that, student-athletes at Albright have the rare opportunity to compete on a high level and enjoy the benefits of the small-college environment. In addition to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and MAC, Albright is affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Albright coaches ask for dedication both on the fields and in the classrooms. Despite the challenge, many Lion athletes earn grade-point averages of 3.0 and above in a variety of pre-professional disciplines and distinctive programs. Clearly, Albright is about academic excellence, first and foremost. In the summer of 2009 the Albright College Athletic department signed with Internet Consulting Services to redesign the athletic website. After just a few short weeks, ICS presented Albright with a top-notch website that truly shows what Lions athletics are all about. Gene L. Shirk Stadium Shirk Stadium, dedicated in 1925 and home to the Albright Lions for more than 80 years, underwent major renovations in 2005, turning it into one of the top Division III football stadiums in the nation. The original home grandstand, built nearly a century ago, was replaced with a new building that seats 3,000 spectators while providing locker rooms, training facilities, and a laundry room for the Lion football, men s and women s soccer, and field hockey teams. A state-of-the-art press box sits atop the home grandstand, giving both visiting media and VIP s a first-class place to watch the game. The natural-grass playing surface was replaced with A-turf, an artifical turf surface that allows multi-sport play in the new stadium. The stadium also features top-of-the-line lighting that allows for night games to be played throughout the year. A new grandstand on the visitors side seats 2,000 spectators, giving Shirk Stadium a total seating capacity of 5,000. Standing room for spectators is also available at either end zone. A new main entrance, concession stands, and restroom areas sit at the south end of the stadium. Sports Information Director Jimmy McCumber phone: jmccumber@alb.edu 3 4

4 Season Preview Coaching Staff The Albright College field hockey team enters the 2011 season looking to build off a 2010 campaign that equaled a school record with nine wins. However, the Lions know that isn t enough and that there is still room for improvement. Megan Monahan Head Coach 2nd Season We want to show recruits that we re a serious program that is taking things to the next level, said second-year head coach Meg Monahan. The team s strength starts in goal with returning starter Marguerite DeLucas. The sophomore led the league in saves last year as a freshman, and still has three years left in the Albright cage. The Lions will also rely on their captains, Madison Bailey and Beth Moran. Moran will line up in center midfield and Albright will be counting on her passing skills, field vision and leadership to orchestrate their attack. Beth Moran Megan Monahan will enter her second season as Albright s head field hockey coach in In her first season on the sidelines, Monahan engineered one of the most impressive turnarounds in program history. The Lions nine victories tied an Albright record for most wins in a single season. During her first season, Monahan helped netminder Marguerite DeLucas set the program record for most wins and shutouts in a single year with nine and six, respectively. She also helped senior Caitlin Feldman 10 earn second team all-conference honors. Monahan came to Reading after serving as the head field hockey coach at Rosemont College in During her time with the Ravens, Monahan was in charge of the program s day-to-day operations, from recruiting to team and player development. Bailey, a senior, is the key to the Lions defense. She always gives 100 percent, said Monahan. She has a great energy and the other players feed off that. Madison Bailey Albright lost its two leading scorers from 2010, opening up chances for players to step up on the offensive end. Junior Kaitlyn Pietrusewicz (one goal, four assists last year) moves up top, while freshman Allison Dombrowski should also contribute to the Lions attack. When not on the field, Monahan has spent the last three years working at the international marketing firm Accenture in Philadelphia. As one of the company s top marketing consultants, Monahan developed a $2.9 million strategic pharmaceutical marketing plan. She also interacted daily with client brand leaders and served as project SME for pharmaceutical brand planning on a global level. A 2003 graduate of Lafayette College where she earned a bachelor s degree in economics and business, Monahan was a standout member of the college s Division I field hockey program. campaign. Albright will be looking to navigate a difficult non-conference schedule as the Lions prepare for a Commonwealth slate that includes national powerhouses Messiah and Lebanon Valley. We re looking to improve our mental toughness this year, said Monahan, emphasizing the need to avoid second-half letdowns and late goals in order to be succesful. Despite a small roster, the Lions have an exciting group of newcomers looking to compete for roles, and the talent to continue building on a promising 2010 One of the program s most dominant forwards ever, Monahan still holds the single season records for goals scored and points. Her 65 career goals and 160 career points rank her second all-time, while her 32 career assists place her third all-time. In her senior season, Monahan not only led her team to their seventh Patriot League tournament title, but was also named an NFHCA Second Team All-American and led the nation in scoring with 33 goals. On top of her All-American honor, Monahan was also a two-time NFHCA All-Region selection, and was named the Patriot League s Offensive Player of the Year twice. After graduating from Lafayette, Monahan began her coaching career at West Chester University as an assistant coach. From there she traveled to upstate New York to serve as both an admissions counselor and assistant field hockey coach at Colgate University in Hamilton. On top of her coaching responsibilites, Monahan also serves as the department s first full-time director of athletic marketing. In June, Monahan was married in North Carolina. There s an energy on this team that was building throughout the spring, said Monahan. The players can t wait to get out there this fall. Monahan will be assisted by Sarah Brant, a former graduate assistant at Frostburg State and a 2006 Division III national champion with Ursinus College. 5 6
