In the mysterious admissions process, students and their families are likely to make their college decision within the first several minutes of their arrival on campus. This first campus experience is aesthetic and is the primary step in answering the question do I feel at home? which is exactly what the college or university is promising to be for the next four years. If the answer is no, the enrollment conversation is over. The leaders of the most successful campuses understand that students educational experiences are at once intellectual, psychological, and spiritual. Alongside their daily interactions with faculty, staff, and friends discussing, studying, strolling, playing, driving, and meditating - there stands the ever present aesthetic canvas of place. A campus has the ability to inspire, to soothe, to heal and to educate. These are the campus qualities that attract and retain students. 5 Students at four-year private institutions in placed much higher importance on campus appearance (by 5.6 percent) than students in Noel-Levitz National Research Report: Why Did They Enroll?: The Factors Influencing College Choice The Campus Enhancement Plan is designed to provide the campus leadership with the scope and confidence to be visionary about their campus, while utilizing current and anticipated funds to their greatest purpose. By focusing on small projects which can often yield large returns in the areas of admissions and retention, the Campus Enhancement Plan is able to create excitement, sustained energy, and creative campus development and results are virtually immediate. In fact, many of the planning process proposed improvements are achievable in a relatively short period (1-5 year horizon) and have the added benefit of providing momentum between larger capital projects. An investment in campus facilities from the entrance, to the admissions tour route, to the forgotten spaces between buildings can provide a wow-factor that will leave a lasting positive impression on prospective students and their families. It will also enhance every aspect of the physical interactions that the student will have with the campus. Arrival at the final plan is a journey through a four-step process (Immersion, Creation, Reflection, and Presentation) that engages institutional stakeholders in the seeing, assessing, and shaping of their physical campus for the future. ADA Ramp This process allowed Malone to navigate between the campus short-term enhancement needs and opportunities to improve the prospective student visit and on-going student experience. The result is a very helpful and practical tool as we plan and prioritize for the future and is already proving very valuable as we engage Malone s friends and donors around a clarified vision for the future.
