There is an increasing need for skilled graduates to quickly move into management positions and the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) prides itself on offering programs that match the needs of the industry. Ranked Number 1 in Australasia Blue Mountains has an outstanding reputation internationally for our Hotel and Event Management programs, which give our students the solid foundation they need for a successful career in hospitality. In a survey of international hotel hiring managers, Blue Mountains ranked number 1 among hospitality management schools in Australasia for an international career (TNS Survey, September 2010). Accreditation, Recognition and Quality Assurance BMIHMS holds full National and State higher education accreditation, from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (National level), and the New South Wales Higher Education Directorate (State level). BMIHMS is also accredited internationally by the Institute of Hospitality (UK), and The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism & Hospitality Education (THE-ICE). This means that our programs are fully recognised both nationally and internationally. Blue Mountains is part of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, which is the oldest university network in the world. There are over 100 members worldwide and the main aim of the organisation is to provide excellent higher education opportunities throughout the Commonwealth. The Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) is an independent, not-for-profit national agency that promotes, audits, and reports on quality assurance in Australian higher education. AUQA has commended Blue Mountains for its strong links with the hospitality industry, the strength of its alumni network and the support given to students past and present. Partnerships & Network BMIHMS is part of the Laureate Hospitality Education network, a leading provider of Swiss hospitality education, with schools in Switzerland, Spain, United States and China. Our undergraduate programs are also quality-endorsed by the University of Queensland (UQ), a member of the Group of Eight, an alliance of leading Australian research universities. Swiss Hospitality Education Students who complete the Bachelor of Business in International Hotel & Resort Management will also graduate with a Diploma in Hotel Operations under agreement with Les Roches International School of Hotel Management, a leading Swiss hospitality management school. Industry Our programs include compulsory periods of paid industry placement with employers in Australia or abroad. These placements reinforce and extend knowledge and skills learned on campus and prove to be a valuable networking opportunity with potential employers. opportunities include three, four and five-star hotels and resorts, boutique properties, and tourism developments. The Three Pillars of Success Our philosophy of teaching and learning is founded on the Three Pillar approach of: > Professional and Personal Development > Practical Skills > Theoretical Knowledge The result of this approach is that our programs combine university-level teaching and research with industry-standard practical training, which is further supported by mentorship and individual coaching. Two ideal study locations Leura and Undergraduate students live and study on campus in Leura in a simulated hotel environment during their first two years. This allows them to bond closely within the international student community while focusing on the demanding schedule of applied blocks of study, including late and early shifts. The Leura campus offers a range of facilities for students, including a professionally staffed library, a recreation room with a plasma TV, pool tables, tabletop soccer and table tennis, tennis/basketball court, swimming pool and outdoor barbeque area. There is also a choice of three dining venues for students to dine at. Postgraduate and undergraduate third year students focus on the business elements of the programs at the executive business centre located in the heart of city. The campus boasts state-of-the-art teaching facilities in a modern and corporate environment, and is in close proximity to many international hotel chains. Newly furnished accommodation located in the inner city is also available for students to rent (subject to availability). 2

3 Programs Bachelor of Business (International Hotel & Resort Management) 2.5 years This degree program gives students a broad business-focused education and training in all key aspects of hotel and resort management. The program prepares students for supervisory and management trainee positions on graduation in the hotel industry, particularly in resorts, as well as associated accommodation, hospitality and tourism sectors. It includes two blocks of practical skills development where students have the opportunity to learn in a simulated hotel environment. It also includes two industry placements of paid employment and training in industry with employers in Australia or abroad including major hotel chains and groups, boutique and stand-alone hotels, as well as serviced apartments. Switzerland is considered the home of hospitality and having a Swiss Diploma will open doors around the world. Les Roches is recognised as a leader in hotel management education and in a global survey of 5-star hotel hiring managers, Les Roches was ranked number 2 among all international hospitality management schools for an international career. Statistically, three institutes occupy this ranking position (TNS Global Survey, September 2010). Gain a double degree Once you have gained your Bachelor of Business in one specialisation you can also gain a second degree by taking another 8 units of study in another specialisation in just two terms. 4 Programs Bachelor of Business (International Event Management) 2.5 years Event Management spans several large sectors including MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), community and cultural celebrations, sporting events and arts/entertainment festivals, and destination tourism branding. Event Management runs across all sectors of industry from corporate to public to government. This degree program gives students a broad business-focused education and training in all key aspects of Event Management. The program includes a practical block of skills-training and practice under professional supervision at the Leura campus, where students are involved with the planning, organisation and delivery of events and functions. It also includes two industry placements of paid employment in industry in Australia or abroad including hotels, convention centres and event venues. 5 Master of International Hotel Management 2 years The Masters program has been designed for graduates with a Bachelors degree in another field to prepare for, and enter, the hospitality industry. The main aim of the program is to educate those students from outside the hospitality industry with a deep understanding and knowledge of hotel management. If a student has a hospitality degree they may receive credit towards some units resulting in the Masters degree being completed in 1 year and 3 months, or five academic terms. The program is also open those students who may not have a formal qualification, but have held a supervisory role in any industry for at least five years. They can apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in International Hotel Management which then leads into the full Masters program. The program is undertaken at the executive business centre in and is completed full-time over two years. 6 Study Pathways Study pathways with partners Blue Mountains undergraduate students have a number of pathway options available to them while they are studying and after graduation. While completing the degree program students can complete a semester abroad at one of our Laureate Hospitality Institutions in Switzerland, Spain, China or the United States. Units completed during the semester abroad will be credited to the Blue Mountains program. It is also possible for students to complete a double degree at one of these institutions. In Australia students can continue their studies at the University of Queensland and gain a double degree. The School of Tourism at the University of Queensland One of our prestigious strategic partners is the University of Queensland (UQ). Renowned internationally for the quality of its academic staff and research, UQ is a founding member of the Group of Eight, an alliance of research-strong universities committed to ensuring that Australia has higher education institutions that are genuinely world class. The University of Queensland quality endorses the Bachelor of Business degrees delivered by the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School. The pathways between our institutions give all students a unique opportunity to continue their studies and earn a double degree. 6 International study pathways Laureate Hospitality Education, our International Partner BMIHMS has an academic, strategic partnership with the internationally renowned Laureate Hospitality Education schools located in Switzerland, Spain, China and the United States. All schools are highly regarded, accredited internationally and offer an English curriculum. Les Roches Bluche Switzerland Nestled in the majestic Swiss Alps, Les Roches Switzerland perches at 1,274 metres in Bluche, close to Crans-Montana, one of Switzerland s most famous sport and tourist resorts. On campus students enjoy comfortable residences, a fitness centre, volleyball and basketball courts, soccer field, outdoor swimming pool, and many other winter and summer sporting activities. Students also have great opportunities to explore Europe, including the surrounding cities of Geneva and Milan. Les Roches Marbella Spain Located in one of the largest centres of tourism in Europe, Les Roches Marbella replicates the lifestyle and activities of a modern hotel. Students complete a similar curriculum to that offered by Blue Mountains, will bilingual Spanish and English options available. Marbella is surrounded by golf courses and beaches, enjoys a wonderful climate all year round, and is ideally located for a wide variety of sporting activities. Les Roches Jin Jiang - China Les Roches Jin Jiang is located in the Shanghai Normal University (SNU) Feng Xian campus. At Feng Xian resort, students can enjoy their leisure time by the ocean, and for those who prefer to experience the city life, downtown Shanghai is only 45-minutes away with a multitude of opportunities for socialising. Students who live on campus have full access to the extensive sports and leisure facilities of the SNU, including football fields, basketball, dance rooms, tennis courts, and track fields. Kendall College - USA The Kendall College campus is located in the heart of Chicago one of America s great cities and a hub for sporting and cultural events. The Riverworks Campus was developed in 2005 and features modern facilities, professional-grade kitchens all alongside the Chicago River at Goose Island. Kendall offers a range of programs including Hospitality Management, Culinary Arts, Business and Education studies. Students enjoy an active social life with a range of clubs available to join as well as an active alumni association.
