1 Sometimes online learning feels like a very lonely place. With IHS Online you join a virtual community of fellow students who study with you assisted by a tutor. The International Hotel School Online Campus, IHS Online is an online platform for staff in the hospitality industry to improve and update their knowledge or for those interested in studying without the commitment of attending a course full time. >>Welcome to IHS Online As one of South Africa s leading hospitality schools, The International Hotel School offers a modern mix of relevant courses that equip individuals with the skills and knowledge they require to be successful hospitality industry professionals. These are now also available to the student through correspondence and Online Learning. Based on materials developed by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) the subjects offered cover the full range of hospitality management disciplines and operational areas. The material is identical to that utilised by over 1500 universities, colleges, vocational technical schools and government agencies in 54 countries worldwide enabling students to achieve certification to international standards. >>Bringing hospitality education to you Work and life commitments often make it difficult or impossible to be a full-time (or part-time) student. Online study is a suitable alternative that provides flexibility and convenience. Studying online means you become part of a community of like-minded professionals in pursuit of your career goals. The benefits of online study include: Access to a personal online tutor for subject related queries and assistance. Interactive discussions and opinion polls so that you can learn from and share with others. Tutor based assignments aimed at developing your ability to apply concepts to the real world of work. Automated assessments with instant results. Links to video clips, articles and case studies. reminders, notifications and regular deadlines keep you on track and focused on attaining your goals. IHS Online is the perfect way to round off your skill set while continuing to work in your current position.
2 >>Study material and examinations Each course module carries a final examination (paper-based) completed at an approved centre. Students receive a textbook (paper-based) for each course. All other materials including study guides, notes, quizzes, and self-assessment questions are distributed through the online learning site. Courier costs related to the delivery of textbooks shall be for the student s own account. >>Learning Pathways With our flexible Learning Pathways, students can tailor their studies to suit their needs. IHS Online has a wide range of single subjects which lead to various nationally and internationally-recognised courses ranging from Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management (NQF Level 5) and Higher Certificate in Food and Beverage Management (NQF Level 5) to AHLEI Specialisation Certificates and Diplomas. Students may choose to study courses individually or in subject groups. By following a structured learning pathway students can achieve certificates of departmental specialisation or South African registered NQF Level 5 Certificates and full AHLEI Industry Professional Diplomas. Subjects can be chosen such that they lead from one qualification to another. This gives you, the student, the flexibility to tailor your learning to suit you. Speak to a consultant to find a learning pathway that works for you. >>Course duration Each online learning module is offered over a ten week period. Examinations are ideally taken no later than six months after completion of each course. All online courses run annually, with the student being required to complete a final examination for each subject within 12 months of the registration year. Exams have to be written in one of the IHS exam centres in our campuses (Durban, Cape Town or Johannesburg). A flexible registration and entry point, together with a flexible subject selection policy, allows your staff and students to study what they want, when they want, where they want. >> How do I apply? Application is easy. Step 1: Select the appropriate courses or learning pathway you wish to follow (please make contact with us if you are unsure or require our assistance). Step 2: Complete the application form and submit to the campus nearest you. Step 3: We confirm your application and send you a study fees quotation which matches your learning pathway (registration for full qualifications receive discounts). 9 >>Frequently Asked Questions about Online Learning How does it work? When you are enrolled for a subject you will receive an with a user name and password together with the commencement date for the subject. It is your responsibility to check your s regularly. A subject will typically run over a number of weeks with due dates for submission every week. Every week will include tasks e.g. multiple choice questions, short questions and forum discussions. In addition you will have access to other resources recommended by your tutor e.g. web sites, video clips and Twitter feeds. What do I need? At minimum you require an entry level desktop, laptop or notebook computer with Windows, Microsoft Office and Internet connectivity. Ensure you have Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari set as your Internet browser. DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER as you will not be able to view all the content in a worksheet. In addition you will require an account e.g. Gmail or Yahoo. If you have a Hotmail account its preferable to open a Gmail account instead as s from our server are blocked by Hotmail from time to time. An anti-virus programme which is updated regularly is a necessity. All the network operators offer pre-paid or contract data at very competitive prices. What if I don t have my own computer? Having your own computer is preferable as this will allow for more flexibility and convenience. How much Internet will I use? Online learning worksheets and other tasks require little data usage. Most of the worksheets and tasks can be downloaded and completed off line. As soon as you have completed your work you will have to reconnect and then submit for tutoring. Additional research will of course increase your data usage. What if I ve never worked on a computer much? If you are able to send an or chat on Facebook you will be able to do online learning! During induction you will also be shown how to participate in online learning as well as being enrolled on an online induction programme. What if my computer crashes? As with any academic work the responsibility lies with you to ensure that your work is backed- up and submitted weekly within the deadlines. Ensure that you have an anti-virus programme installed which is updated regularly when you go online. How are my marks calculated? The composition of your course mark will be explained to you at the outset of each course. In most subjects online learning contributes 50%. The final exam contributes a further 50%. In other subjects your online activity will constitute you entire final mark. Your online learning mark will comprise of a number of different tasks which may include research, case study as well as multiple choice questions. Your participation in discussions and opinion polls will also contribute to your final mark.
10 Where do I complete the final exam? Final examinations take place on campus. Your campus administrator will advise you of the dates and times of the final exam for each subject. What if I miss a deadline? If you have not submitted your work by the deadline you will receive a yellow card which is a first warning with a one day extension. If you failed to submit after the extension a red card will be issued with a failedto- submit (FTS). This means that you have received a zero score for the week s work, which will negatively affect of your overall course mark. Unfortunately the system does not allow for extensions or resubmissions. If you have received an FTS you will have to ensure that you work extra hard in subsequent weeks to make up for this. Leaving work for the last minute is a dangerous practice. Circumstances beyond your control for example connectivity problems could prevent you from submitting your work which will result in a FTS. Can I my work to the tutor? Unfortunately you may not submit work using . The system allows your tutor to mark your work, keep a database of your marks as well keeping an electronic archive of all your submissions. For these reasons, all work is to be submitted through the system. How much time will I need? You will need at least 5-10 hours per week. Online study requires much more time and commitment than traditional contact classes. Remember to log on to the system at least 3-5 times per week so you can contribute to discussions. How are my marks calculated for discussion and opinion polls? You are required to post at least one comment to every discussion topic as well posting two responses to the posts of any of your class mates. At least one vote is required in every opinion poll with your reasoning. Your contribution in these forums will contribute to your final mark. What if I need help? If you experience any technical difficulties (or you have lost your username or password) contact the site administrator using the messaging function. For academic queries please feel free to contact your tutor through the site. Please remember that an addition to sending your tutor a message on the system they are always a phone or Skype call away. What is Work-Integrated Learning? In certain programmes you will be required to complete a period of Work-Integrated Learning. This means that you will have to undertake full-time employment within the hospitality industry so that you are able to apply concepts to the real world of work. The onus would be on you to secure a suitable placement, and must be approved by IHS in advance. During this time you will be required to spend time in various functional departments according to the criteria of the programme. Regular online assignments, employer evaluations and other tasks are completed online. Academic policies, procedures and guidelines Please take note that all policies, procedures and guidelines will apply in the online environment, including the disciplinary code and policy on plagiarism.
