2 In an effort to better understand the concerns and attitudes of today s top fleet managers and executives, GreenRoad conducted a survey of North American fleet decision-makers. GreenRoad is the leader in driving performance and safety management, and companies across the world are using the service to transform driving culture and deliver the best drivers on the road. The survey was conducted in the fall of 2011 and included fleet decision-makers in industries ranging from private delivery to construction, company cars and more. Respondents were evenly distributed among all fleet sizes, from fleets with fewer than 100 to greater than 1,000 vehicles. Eighty-one percent of the respondents influence the purchase of or provide final budget approval for fleet technology or other major fleet purchases. A total of 380 respondents completed the survey. Saving Money, Improving Driver Performance & Safety Top Challenges The fleet managers and executives surveyed said the top challenge facing their fleets is saving money by reducing fuel consumption. In a rank ordering, fleet leaders indicated that their most important concern was saving money. The rank order average rating was 5.28, out of a highest possible score of 6. However, as important as fuel is to these decision-makers, very few have invested in or implemented a fuel savings program, which creates an opportunity for solutions that can improve fleet operations. More than half of the respondents said that beyond everything erything else, fuel cost is the single top issue facing their operation. Yet only 37% of this fleet leadership had implemented a new fuel-saving initiative in the past 12 months. Of those that did, there were mixed results: 25% didn t even set objectives for the program. And of those that did, nearly one-fifth said it did not meet their goals or objectives. GreenRoad White Paper 2

3 The second most important issue for these fleet leaders related to driver safety; the rank order average rating was 4.84 out of 6. Fleet leadership is investing in safety: A good number of these managers and executives -- 44% -- have implemented a safety program in the last 12 months, and generally they say they are satisfied with these programs. Of those who set goals for their programs, 87% said they were happy with the results. And yet the market is still searching for improvements. Forty-two percent of the respondents indicated that they would probably or definitely invest in some sort of driving performance and safety management technology in the next 3-4 months. Reducing crash rates is also a top-of-mind concern for fleet managers and executives today, with an average rank ordering score of 4.79 of 6. Less important challenges include cutting emissions to meet eco-relatehiring and retaining qualified drivers; and effectively training drivers. objectives; Forty-three percent of the survey respondents said their organizations had implemented a new safety program in the past 12 months, and 87% of those who had set concrete goals for the program said it had met or exceeded those goals. FLEET LEADERS THINK THERE S ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT About 94% of the managers and executives surveyed agreed that improving driving performance will have a major, beneficial impact on their fleet costs. Just 19% agreed that their drivers are true professionals and probably do not have much room for improvement. About 57% of the respondents said they agreed that their fleet management had been equipped with all of the necessary tools to be successful in their jobs, and 58% GreenRoad White Paper 3

4 agreed that they had the appropriate level of visibility into their fleet. CONCLUSIONS Despite incremental gains in fuel efficiency and safety afforded by programs implemented recently, fleet leaders across North America are still searching for solutions and technology to help them meet their cost savings and safety improvement goals. As important as fuel is, very few fleet leaders have invested in or enacted a fuel savings program. Of those that did, a quarter didn t even set objectives for the program, and of those that did, nearly onefifth said it did not meet their goals or objectives. As a result, companies with service offerings that can demonstrate fuel savings value have the opportunity to work with fleet leadership to create value. A close second in importance for these fleet decision-makers was driver safety. A good number of companies and organizations have already invested in safety programs, but an equal proportion is still open to new technology solutions. These top-of-mind concerns span across industries from private delivery to construction, company cars and more and fleet size, from fewer than 100 to greater than 1,000 vehicles. Among them, it s widely acknowledged that there is room for improvement and a need within the market for solutions and technology that can lessen or remove entirely these pain points.
