2 2011 Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami The Tohoku Earthquake occurred off the NorthEastern Coast of Japan in March 2011 and was the fourth largest in recorded history, reaching a magnitude of 9.0. Musicians Institute, College of Contemporary Music (MI) and non-profit humanitarian organization Relief International (RI) have partnered to provide music education grants to schools located in areas devastated by the tragic tsunami that occurred in March of The earthquake caused a devastating tsunami that killed over 15,000 people. In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and most difficult crisis for Japan. -Japanese Prime Minister, Naoto Kan Music has the capacity to heal. By sharing the gift of music, we hope to help the children that have witnessed this horrible disaster to recover from their trauma and begin to live again. -- Mr. Hisatake Shibuya, President of Musicians Institute. In memoriam of the disaster s one-year anniversary, the Jam for Japan Initiative will award grants of up to $5,000 USD to eligible elementary, middle and high schools with music programs located in the affected areas. Help us restore music to a region silenced by disaster.

3 Since 1977, Musicians Institute has been a world leader in contemporary music education. Located in the heart of Hollywood, MI s dynamic curriculum is current, comprehensive and compatible with the needs of students who not only desire to study music, but also build a career in the music industry with the knowledge they learn on campus. Musicians Institute has strong ties to Japan. MI hosts a large international community on campus consisting of many Japanese students, faculty and staff, and maintains a close relationship with the Japanese-American business community. In March of 2011, Musicians Institute donated financially to the Red Cross to assist in immediate relief during the disaster, but the community on campus wanted to do more. From that desire, the idea for Jam for Japan was launched.
