3 Commonly known as Modernisme in Spain, Jugendstil in Germany, Secession in Austria and Slovenia, and Stile Liberty in Italy, Art Nouveau first developed in Barcelona and Brussels at the end of the 1880s through precursor architects such as Antoni Gaudí and Victor Horta. As modernity enthusiasts, artists of Art Nouveau were seeking to move away from immediate past styles whilst rediscovering the decorative arts of forgotten Middle-Ages or those more exotic forms from Japan and the Far East. Nature s forms, which are always linked to a specific function, quickly became a major reference for this art which was meant to be essential and close to the needs of modern man. Spānijā jūgendstilu pazīst kā modernismu (Modernism), Vācijā kā jūgendstilu (Jugendstil), Austrijā un Slovēnijā kā secesiju (Secession), savukārt Itālijā to dēvē par brīvības stilu (Stile Liberty). Jūgendstila pirmsākumi meklējami gadu beigās Barselonā un Briselē, kur tā aizsācēji bija arhitekti Antonio Gaudi un Viktors Ortā. Būdami modernā stila piekritēji, jūgendstila mākslinieki centās atteikties no nesenās pagātnes stiliem, tajā pašā laikā atdzīvinot piemirsto viduslaiku dekoratīvo mākslu un izmantojot Japānai un Tālajiem Austrumiem raksturīgos eksotiskos ornamentus. Dabas motīvi, kuri vienmēr tika saistīti ar konkrētu funkciju, kļuva par galveno šī mākslas stila iezīmi, kura pamatideja bija funkcionalitāte un modernā cilvēka vajadzību atspoguļošana. Begeistert von der Moderne, versuchten die Künstler des Jugendstils, sich von bisherigen Stilarten zu lösen, während sie gleichzeitig die vergessene dekorative Kunst des Mittelalters oder die exotischen Stilelemente aus Japan und dem fernen Osten wiederentdeckten. Die Formen der Natur, die immer mit einer bestimmten Funktion verbunden sind, wurden schnell zum Vorbild für diese Kunst, die sich als wesentlich und nahe an den Bedürfnissen des modernen Menschen verstand. 03

4 Thanks to the popularity of International Exhibitions and illustrated magazines, the Art Nouveau style quickly spread across Europe, expressed by handicraft (Arts and Crafts, Wiener Werkstätte etc) as well as machine-made goods (Ecole de Nancy, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy). Made famous by iconic artists such as Emile Gallé in Nancy (glassware art), Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland (furniture) and Hector Guimard in Paris (Paris Metropolitan stations), the movement mostly died out with the beginning of the First World War in A committed and professional network The Réseau Art Nouveau Network brings together more than twenty European institutions collaborating on projects supported by the European Commission s Culture Programme. Founded in 1999, the Network aims to study, promote and preserve Art Nouveau in Europe through many activities (exhibitions, publications, conferences and teaching materials) for the general public (including children and those with visual impairment), technical specialists and academics. Jūgendstila popularitāti veicināja tādi slaveni mākslinieki kā Emīls Galē Nansijā (stikla izstrādājumi), Čārlzs Renī Makintošs Skotijā (mēbeles) un Hektors Gimārs Parīzē (Parīzes metro stacijas), taču sākoties Pirmajam pasaules karam gadā, šī kustība apsīka. Sadarbības tīkls tika dibināts gadā, lai pētītu, popularizētu un saglabātu jūgendstilu Eiropā, organizējot dažādus pasākumus (izstādes, publikācijas, konferences un piedāvājot mācību materiālus) gan plašākai sabiedrībai (tai skaitā bērniem un cilvēkiem ar redzes traucējumiem), gan ekspertiem, zinātniekiem un augstskolu pasniedzējiem. Dank der Popularität internationaler Ausstellungen und illustrierter Zeitschriften verbreitete sich der Jugendstil rasch in ganz Europa, sowohl durch das Kunsthandwerk (Arts and Crafts, Wiener Werkstätte usw.) als auch durch industriell gefertigte Waren (Ecole de Nancy, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy). Berühmt geworden durch herausragende Künstler wie Emile Gallé in Nancy (Glaskunst), Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Schottland (Möbel) und Hector Guimard in Paris (Pariser U-Bahnstationen), endete die Bewegung weitgehend mit dem Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges 1914 Ein engagiertes und professionelles Netzwerk Das Réseau Art Nouveau Network verbindet über zwanzig europäische Institutionen. Diese arbeiten an Projekten zusammen, die vom Kulturprogramm der Europäischen Kommission unterstützt werden. Gegründet 1999, hat das Netzwerk das Ziel, das reiche Jugendstilerbe in Europa weiter zu erforschen, zu fördern und zu bewahren. Art Nouveau & Ecology In a time of sustainable development and environmental awareness, Nature, the main source of inspiration in Art Nouveau, remains a most concerning topic. The Réseau Art Nouveau Network s fourth European project, Art Nouveau & Ecology, seeks to explore the specific connection between Art Nouveau heritage and nature. Jugendstil & Natur In einer Zeit, die durch Nachhaltigkeit und Umweltbewusstsein geprägt ist, bleibt die Natur als bedeutendste Inspirationsquelle des Jugendstils ein wichtiges Thema. Das vierte europäische Projekt des Réseau Art Nouveau Netzwerks unter dem Thema Jugendstil & Natur will die besondere Verbindung zwischen dem Jugendstilerbe und der Natur erforschen. 07

11 Exhibition The Nature of Art Nouveau The exhibition encourages visitors from all over Europe to an interactive discovery of Art Nouveau and its relation with nature. It does so by detailing the various stages of production, from the raw or natural state (wood, glass, stone, etc.) to the detailed object, whilst using the sensory and tactile dimension. International symposium The Perception of Art Nouveau (Brussels, December 2010) This symposium offered an historical review of Art Nouveau since its boom between the 1880s and the 1920s, a movement that gathered both admirers and detractors. This fact is confirmed by texts and cartoons, by artists and modern intellectuals rediscovering it, and its current economic and touristic revaluation. Die verschiedenen Arbeitsstufen vom natürlichen Rohmaterial (Holz, Glas, Stein usw.) bis zum fertigen Kunstobjekt können hier mit allen Sinnen erlebt werden Internationales Symposium Die Aufnahme des Jugendstils (Brüssel, Dezember 2010) Dieses Symposium bot einen historischen Rückblick auf den Jugendstil von 1880 bis 1920, einer Bewegung, die sowohl auf Bewunderung als auch auf Ablehnung stieß, wie durch Texte und Karikaturen aus der Epoche belegt wurde. Im Mittelpunkt des Symposiums standen auch die Wiederentdeckung des Jugendstils durch heutige Künstler und Intellektuelle und seine gegenwärtige touristische und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung. 11

12 A series of five historical labs These conferences dealing with ecology and nature allow professionals and the general public to share their knowledge and experiences on Art Nouveau. They take place in Terrassa (June 2010), Barcelona (June 2011), Milan (November 2011), Aveiro (January 2013) and Rīga (September 2014). Multilateral and bilateral exchanges The co-organizers and professional colleagues from across Europe are able to share personal experiences and best practice on a number of key topics through a series of meetings and technical seminars. Educational books and online activities These educational tools reiterate the important role played by nature and the environment, and the use of raw materials in the development of European Art Nouveau. 13 Eine Reihe von fünf öffentlichen Fachkonferenzen Diese Konferenzen befassen sich mit Ökologie und Natur und erlauben es Fachleuten und der breiten Öffentlichkeit, ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrung über den Jugendstil zu teilen. 14 1 During a stormy night on 23 January 1904, the wooden Norwegian coastal town of Ålesund vanished in a devastating fire. During the next three years the town was rebuilt with the help of the best Norwegian architects, and more than 320 buildings were erected in a characteristic and local variety of Art Nouveau or Jugendstil, in a small and concentrated area. Während der nächsten drei Jahre wurde die Stadt mit Hilfe der besten norwegischen Architekten wieder aufgebaut. Über 320 Gebäude wurden konzentriert in einem kleinen Innenstadtbereich in einer charakteristischen und lokalen Variante des Jugendstils errichtet. 16 1 Mainly designed between 1904 and 1920, the Aveiro new style buildings were often referred to in local newspapers as the Aveiro style. Art Nouveau was imported into the city at that time by a conservative bourgeoisie and rich emigrants from Brazil who, once back home in Portugal, worked on gaining social and economic power. The Art Nouveau elements left in Aveiro can be seen especially on buildings façades. They are decorated by locally-made tiles with Art Nouveau designs, whereas most of the remaining built structures and interiors obey to more traditional layouts and decorations. 18 1 Around 1900, thousands of visitors from all over the world came to the Bad Nauheim spa in Germany for thermal treatments. Between 1905 and 1911, creators from the Darmstadt artists colony created and presented the Sprudelhof spa complex as an Art Nouveau total work of art. Arcades surround the central fountain of Sprudelhof leading to six thermal baths, each of which have a decorated waiting hall and a charming courtyard surrounded by corridors and baths. Even today, visitors can enjoy the benefits of these thermal waters in this preserved Art Nouveau heritage embedded in a garden landscape. Als um 1900 eine wachsende Zahl von Gästen aus der ganzen Welt zur Badekur nach Bad Nauheim kam, entstand zwischen 1905 und 1911 die größte geschlossene Jugendstilbadeanlage Europas als einzigartiges Gesamtkunstwerk, an dem auch Mitglieder der Darmstädter Künstlerkolonie beteiligt waren. Arkaden säumen die eingefassten Heilquellen und führen zu sechs Badehäusern, alle ausgestattet mit einem kostbar dekorierten Warteraum und einem bezaubernden Schmuckhof mit Brunnen, um den die Korridore und Bade-zellen angeordnet sind. 20 1 Between the 1880s and the 1920s, Barcelona and Catalonia were the melting pot of new artistic trends which sought to push beyond the boundaries of Academicism. This, along with a new vogue for anything coming from abroad, provided good ground for the expansion of Art Nouveau, which in Catalonia became known as Modernisme. The main figures in this movement were Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch. 22 1 Victor Horta, Henry van de Velde, Paul Hankar, and Gustave Serrurier-Bovy were the key protagonists in the emergence of Art Nouveau, both in Brussels and across Europe. For architects, painters, and sculptors, private houses provided a place of experimentation, where they could harmoniously blend architecture and applied arts. A new generation of architects followed in their footsteps, designing hundreds of Art Nouveau façades in the newly developed areas of Brussels. Using old traditional craft-based techniques, these architects also used modern industrial materials: carved stones, wood and metalwork, stained glass, sgraffiti, and coloured ceramic. This type of Art Nouveau received international recognition through the work of artists such as Mackintosh, Margaret and Frances Macdonald, Herbert MacNair, Jessie M. King, Talwin Morris, George Walton and James Salmon, in both architecture and applied arts. This legacy can be seen today in Glasgow as it hosts Scotland s vibrant creative industries and contributes to an art and design culture that has enabled the city s post-industrial regeneration. The national awakening, the struggle for independence and economic growth provided ideal conditions for creativity. Artists and architects drew inspiration from international sources, but also from local vernacular building styles and traditions. The flora and fauna as well as natural materials played an important role during the period, adding a specific local touch to Finnish Art Nouveau which is still an important part of Helsinki s identity today. 28 1 28 Art Nouveau was imported to La Chaux-de-Fonds in the late 19 th century under the influence of watchmakers and their sales representatives. Stained glass, tiling, staircase ornamentation, stucco, woodwork and ironwork become more and more part of these new buildings. In 1905, Charles L Eplattenier established an important school. This young professor along with his students (one of whom was Le Corbusier) developed a new creative vocabulary language (known today as the Style sapin), based on style and design. The decoration of the local Crematorium ( ) is considered to be the masterpiece of this period. This new ornamentation was widely used in watch box design, in stained glass and wallpaper, and in architecture and sculpture too. 30 1 Between 1900 and 1920, Havana was enriched by beautiful examples of Art Nouveau residential buildings. Unlike the European total art, Havana s Art Nouveau was usually restricted to plated ornamentation on neoclassical or eclectic façades. Catalonian masters, who came from Spain between 1790 and 1840, brought their know-how in building techniques and handcrafts, thus encouraging the production of prefabricated decorative elements in specialized workshops (Baltazar Ustrell, Mario Rotllant) and developed a new aesthetic for furniture and carpentry, iron and wood work, stained glass and ceramics. 32 1 32 Art nouveau architecture of Ljubljana is mainly influenced by the Vienna Secession, where rational and geometric forms are subtly highlighted. The first real secessionist inspiredwork, the so-called Dragon Bridge was designed by the Dalmatian architect Jurij Zaninović, and built in Maks Fabiani and Jože Plečnik, two central figures of modern Slovene architecture, also took part in the modern art movement in Vienna. While Plečnik contributed to the Secessionist movement chiefly throughout his early Viennese works of art, Fabiani gave Ljubljana its Art Nouveau character by drafting the first regulation plan of the city and designing a series of secessionist and early modern buildings. Ļubļanas jūgendstila arhitektūru galvenokārt ir ietekmējusi Vīnes secesija ar savām atturīgi uzsvērtajām racionāli lietišķajām un ģeometriskajām formām. Drawing its inspiration from the world of plants and flowers, the Ecole de Nancy made forays into all creative areas. Glass, furniture, bookbinding, stained glass, as well as architecture and fine arts, all participated in the wave of innovatory fervour that nourished the idea of Rien sans art et art pour tous (Nothing without art, and art for all). 19. gs. beigās, pateicoties Emīlam Galē, Nansī kļuva par vienu no galvenajiem Francijas dekoratīvās mākslas atdzimšanas centriem. 36 1 36 Around 1900, Stile Liberty appeared in Lombardy expressed by large industrial projects such as the Taccani hydroelectric plant, the tramways and funiculars and buildings that changed the urban landscape. In Milan, beyond the outstanding buildings of the city centre such as the Palazzo Castiglioni, the Casa Campanini or the late Casa Berri Meregalli, large new areas developed with buildings named after their owners: Balzarini, Battaini, Galimberti, Guazzoni, etc. Some of them were designed in collaboration with Alessandro Mazzucotelli, a recognized wrought-iron craftsman. Near Como, some of their beautiful examples are Villa Bernasconi in Cernobbio, the holiday villas in Brunate and Cirla, and Poletti Villas in Lanzo d Intelvi. Offering a large variety of formal trends for this style, the most typical are National Romanticism and Perpendicular Art Nouveau. Created in 2009, the Rīga Art Nouveau Museum offers an insight into interior design and applied arts during the early part of the 20 th century. Sie präsentiert mit mehr als einem Drittel aller Bauwerke in der Innenstadt eine bemerkenswerte Dichte an Jugendstilarchitektur. 40 1 Modernisme in Terrassa initially developed in buildings used for the textile industry, where functionality took over all other standards. It grew very rapidly and lasted far longer than it had done in other regions. Its development and popularity were due to the work of the architect Lluís Muncunilli i Parellada, who marked the city with his concept of new architecture. Sākotnēji Terasā tā saucamajā modernisma stilā tika projektētas ēkas, kuras izmantoja tekstilrūpniecībā, jo svarīgākā to īpašība bija funkcionalitāte. Stila popularitāte strauji pieauga un šeit tas nezaudēja savas vadošās pozīcijas daudz ilgāk nekā citos reģionos.
