Allpaddlers,irrespectiveofage,areencouragedtoengageintakingresponsibilityfortheirownprolongedgood healthandlongevityascompetitiveorsocialpaddlers.regularmedicalcheckbups,bloodpressure,bloodtests, stresstestsandmuscularskeletalrecoveryandmaintenanceareallhighlyrecommended. TheonuswillbeonallpaddlerstodeclarethattheyhavehadengagedinregularmedicalcheckBupsoverthe past12monthsandtodisclosethattheyhavenoknownprebexistingailmentsthatcouldendangerthemor otherswhilepaddling.thisshouldbeviewedasavitalinvestmentinone shealth. This change has resulted after receiving feedback on disparity in the way requested medical clearance were treatedbydoctors.somedoctorsrefusedpointblanktowriteclearancesduetolitigationconcerns,whilesome wroteclearanceswithoutperformingorprescribinganyformoftests.fortunatelytherewasagreatdepthof soundpracticeinthemiddleground. While the situation was not ideal, AusDBF is aware of at least two instances whereby paddlers who sought clearances were found to have serious medical issues. These issues precluded them from participating at AusChamps and required them to undergo cardiac surgery. We are happy to report positive outcomes, the promptsmadecouldwellhaveresultedinpreventingprematuredisabilitiesordeath. PADDLERFEEDBACKGENERATESPOSITIVECHANGEIN2015 Every year AusDBF conducts a survey of participants to see what they thought about their AusChamps experienceandwhatgoodideastheyhavetoimprovethenextone. WiththeAusChampsnowholdingSmallBoat(10s)racingforthelastfourseasons,paddlershaveindicatedvery strongviewsabouttheformat.whileanoverwhelmingnumberofpeoplefeltthe10sshouldberetained,the majorityfeltsomeclubswere gaming thecategoryandneglectingthetraditional20sracing. Withthisinmindwehaveremovedrestrictionsaroundthe10sand20screwsseeninpastyears.For2015,all paddlerswillbeabletocontestboth10sand20sinthesamecategoryanddivision.thatmeans,forexample, youcannowpaddleinthepremieropen10sandpremieropen20s. Therationalebehindthisisthatthewinnerofthe10scanclaimtohavebeatenallclubsandracedagainstthe bestonoffer.previously,largerandstrongerclubsfocussedonthe 20s.Itisalsohopedclubswillnolonger choosebetweenthesmallandstandardboats,andthe20scompetitionwillbestronger.ausdbfisawaresome clubshad20bplusmenorwomenavailable,butchosetoenterthesmallboatclassastheyfeltitenhancedtheir opportunities for medalling, as they did not have the depth across the board. Now, clubs can put their best effortsintobothclassesandseeexactlywheretheystand. We have also expanded the representative racing program, with distances of 500m and 200m in Small and Standard Classes on offer. The Oceania Championships will now be a standalone day, giving all paddlers the opportunitytoenjoytheirresults,withouthavingtoswapjerseysandslipintotheirclubcrewsintheafternoon. Theintroductionof10sand20sisalsodesignedtostrengthenthecompetition.Manysmallerstatesdon thave thedepthtocontest20sinanumberofagecategories.thismeantfieldswereoftensmall,andsomestate crewspreparedallseason,onlytobetoldatthelastminutetheyhadnoonetorace.underthenewformat, moststatesshouldbeabletoentermoreagecategories,givingthemtheopportunitytoraceforthefirsttime. The Award is presented each year at the AusChamps to a remarkable volunteer,inmemoryandcelebrationofthelifejontaylor.theawardisin recognition of the outstanding contribution that Jon Taylor made to the development and growth of the Sport in Australia since he first became involvedinthesportinthelate1980 s. JonTaylorwasafoundingmemberofAustralianDragonBoatFederation andavisionary.heheldpositionsontheboardasadministrationdirector, andthenpresidentfrom2003untilhisretirementinapril2008. Jon was one of those truly amazing people, who was willing to give everything to the growth and development of this sport. Jon was passionate about the sport of Dragon Boat Racing and was very determined to see AusDBF reach its potential of having all States in Australian as members. This was finally achieved at his final meeting in April2008whenTasmaniabecameafullmember.Hewasalsoadriverof thedevelopmentofoceania,whichhasnowbeenestablished.
