(2012), Brook/Cole, Cengage Learning Loose- leaf paper and composition notebook Pens, pencils, erasers Calculators (scientific or graphing is to your advantage) Graphing Paper and colored pencils Rulers COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the first of two courses designed to provide the mathematical tools needed by students enrolled in selected technical occupational programs. Topics included in this course are equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of linear equations and inequalities with matrices. Formerly MA121. Course Offering: As needed. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of MA 110A with a grade of C or better, MA 108 with a grade of B or better, or placement. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify and solve linear equations and inequalities. 2. Differentiate between polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and other functions and their graphs. 3. Solve systems of linear equations and linear inequalities with alternate methods. COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Your success in this course depends on the amount of effort you put into it. Participate. Come to class on time and prepared to learn. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get information or work that you missed. Class time is reserved for lectures, practice problems, and question-answer sessions.

Practice makes perfect: Homework is important for learning a lesson. It helps you understand the lesson and improve your mathematical skills. Make time to study outside of class at least 2-3 hours per lesson, do the assignments. Do your homework! There are no short cuts. Patience. Be patient with yourself if you don t understand the material. Please feel free to ask me for any assistance. Schedule an appointment with me if you are unable to see me during my office hours. I also encourage peer study groups. GRADING: Grades given for this course are letter grades: A, B, C, D, and F. Grades by Percentage A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: Below 60% ASSESSMENT: 10%: Homework Practice 10%: Daily quizzes 20%: Section quizzes 40%: Tests and Project 20%: Comprehensive Final Exam Quizzes: Daily 5-minute quiz will be given at the beginning of each class meeting except those days which a test or a section quiz has been scheduled. Absolutely NO make-up or retake these quizzes. Five of the lowest scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Section quizzes will be given after two or three sections completes and will be given at the start of the class day. Section quizzes: After 2 or three sections, a scheduled section test will be administered at the beginning of the class. Every section quiz has to complete within 30 minutes. Students may make up the section quiz only on the day that the quiz is administered. It is the student s sole responsibility to make arrangement with the instructor to make up the quiz. Tests will be completed in class under the supervision of the instructor. Make-up tests and quizzes will be given at the discretion of the instructor. It is the student s sole responsibility to make arrangement with the instructor to make up the missing test. IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION: The instructor reserves the right to make changes in the syllabus and the course outline.

Unapproved resources and electronic devices (i.e., online tutorials and websites) should not be used during the test. Using unapproved resources during a test is considered academic dishonesty. A student caught using unapproved resources will get an automatic F on the test and will be reported for academic dishonesty. Take-home tests should be done individually. Anyone caught cheating will get an automatic F on the test and will be reported for academic dishonesty. Please refrain from the following during class: texting, surfing the internet, making phone calls. Disruptive behavior in class will not be tolerated. Students who continue to disrupt the class will be asked to leave the class. The use of cellphones during tests will not be accepted. Please place your cellphones and all electronic devices on "silent" mode during class. If you must take a call during the test, please inform the instructor. LATE WORK & ABSENTISM Students are encouraged to follow the course calendar and to turn in work on time. All assignments are due on the last day of classes, Dec. 6, 2015. It is the student s responsibility to attain information while he or she is absent in the course. A failing grade, F will be automatically given, if a student is absent for more than 3 consecutive course days without advanced notice. ACCOMMODATIONS STATEMENT In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a student who wishes to receive instructional accommodations, because of a documented sensory and/or learning disability, should meet with the instructor to discuss these accommodations. If a class has to be postponed, that class session will be made up on another day, or class will be extended 15-30 minutes each session to make up for the missed time. You will be notified via email using the guamcc.edu account of class changes. learning and scholarship cannot thrive without this fundamental value. Therefore, academic dishonesty cannot be tolerated. Students who commit such acts expose themselves to sanctions as severe and expulsion from the College.
