2 MAC /82889 MAC College Algebra University of Central Florida-Rosen Campus, Fall of 2008 MW (noon-1:15 P.M.), room 105, CRN#82889:, 3 Cr. Hrs. ****************************************************************************** Instructor: Susan Sun Nunamaker Phone: (312) Web: Office: Suite 204-C susan.nunamaker@gmail.com Available: before or after class or by appointment ****************************************************************************** Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra or two years of high school algebra. Course Description: Inequalities, high degree polynomials, graphs, rational, logarithmic, and exponential functions will be studied. This course prepares students for higher level mathematics courses. The "NC" grading policy applies to this course. Course Objectives: This course is designed to familiarize the student with such fundamental mathematical concepts such as polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, and various methods for solving linear systems of equations. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to apply various problem-solving strategies to find solutions to a variety of real-life problems. Furthermore, the student will have acquired the necessary algebraic skills to continue pursuing higher levels of mathematics. Textbook: (Required) College Algebra, by Lial, Hornsby, and Schneider Third Custom Edition. Calculator(s): Students need his/her own calculator. Due to UCF policy for this course, you may only use a TI-30XA calculator on the tests and quizzes. Calculators will be checked on exam days. Use of any unauthorized calculator will result in a grade of zero and possible disciplinary action. Students may not share calculators during exams. Attendance: Past experience indicates that students who will succeed in the class are those who attend classes. Attendance will be taken every session. If a student is absent, he/she is responsible for all missed work and for obtaining any supplemental material given out during lecture. If a student wishes to withdraw from this class, it is student's responsibility to withdraw officially;the deadline for withdrawing from this class this semester is October 17, If a student is late on the day when a quiz or test is given, the student would only have the remaining allotted time to complete the quiz or test (as do those students who were on time.) Classroom Etiquette: Classroom behavior which disrupts the learning environment will not be tolerated. If a student is disruptive or does not participate in class, he/she would receive one warning and may be asked to leave. Please give yourself ample time to arrive in class and turn off your cell phones prior to lecture. Students should try to avoid leaving early or arriving late because it is a distraction to fellow classmates and to the instructor. Academic Integrity: The work submitted in this class is expected to be your own. Forms of cheating/academic dishonesty include (but are not limited to): communicating (either giving or receiving information) with another student during a test or quiz, sharing calculator during a test or quiz, and communicating contents of a test or quiz to another student. Academic dishonesty will result either in a grade of zero or course failure (grade of F), at the discretion of the instructor. In addition, further disciplinary action through the university will be taken. Please be aware that disciplinary action through the university could result in suspension or expulsion. For more 2
3 information on academic dishonesty, please see the Golden Rule contents available at Other Policy: All answers must be in "simplified form", unless otherwise specified. For example, all fractions must be reduced. Mutual Expectation: Your instructor, Susan Sun Nunamaker, will treat you with courtesy and respect, return your phone calls, s, and your papers/tests/quizzes within reasonable amount of time, be prepared for class and provide effective problem-solving techniques, model high standards of academic honesty and integrity. In return, you are expected to treat your instructor and fellow classmates with courtesy and respect, be prepared for class (having completed the appropriate assignments), participate in class, contact your instructor if you have any questions or if you don't understand something, and display high standards of academic honesty and integrity. Extra Help: In addition to the instructor and MyMathLab, the Math Lab, located in MAP 113 (Main Campus), is available free of charge to all enrolled students on the following days and times: Mon.- Thurs.(9:00A.M.-7:00P.M.);Fri.(9:00A.M.-3:00P.M.);Sun.(2:00P.M.-6:00P.M.). Please double check these time slots before arrival. There is also an online assistance program available via MyMathLab. Students with Disabilities: University of Central Florida is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for all persons with disabilities. This syllabus is available in alternate formats upon request. Students who need accommodations must be registered with Student Disability Services, Ferrell Commons, room 132, phone , M-F (8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.) before requesting accommodations from the instructor. No accomodations will be provided until the Student Disability Services office has notified the instructor concerning appropriate accommodations. Grading Contract: Grading Composition-Option A Grading Composition-Option B Test % Average of the highest two test scores % Test % In-class Quizzes average % Test % On-line Homework average % In-class Quizzes Ave % On-line Quizzes % On-line homeworks Ave.--5% Final Exam % On-line quizzes Ave % Total % Final Exam % Total % Option B will be used if a student misses a test. If all three tests are taken, the option resulting in the highest grade will be used. If a grade of 0% is given on any test due to an academic integrity violation, then Option A will be used to calculate the course grade. Grading Scale: % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 0-69% F or NC NC ** : The intent of NC grade is to encourage struggling students to remain in class and work hard, rather than withdrawing midway through the semester. By completing the course, the student's exposure to all the class material should allow them to perform better when repeating the class. No course credit is given for an "NC" grade, nor will it satisfy any requirements or subsequent courses' prerequisites. However, the student's UCF grade point average will not be affected by the "NC". 3
4 To earn the "NC" the instructor must feel the student is working very hard to succeed in the class. Therefore, the "No-credit" (NC) grade will be awarded in place of an F when the following crietera are met: Student misses no more than two in-class quizzes. Student misses no more than two on-line homeworks. Student misses no more than one test. Student completes the on-line homeworks and quizzes covering sections Student takes the final exam as scheduled. *Tests are closed book/closed notes. Calculator is used. Calculators may not be shared by students during tests. The date of each test will be announced one week in advance. There will be no make-up tests given, unless under dire circumstances (with supporting documentation). Even then, make-up test can be allowed if and only if the student had contacted the instructor and obtained permission for make-up test before the time of the test. In the event a make up test is given, it will cover the same material of the class assessment but it will not be the same test for the class. *Short, unannounced in-class quizzes will be given frequently. Quizzes cannot be made up. If a quiz is missed, a grade/score of zero will be assigned. The lowest quiz grade/score will be dropped and the remaining quizzes will be averaged for the quiz grade/score at the end of the term. *Though not part of the grading composition, there will be class works that are good preparations for tests and quizzes. *There will be graded on-line homeworks and quizzes, which utilize the MyMathLab software packaged with your textbook(course ID: ucfmath93172, school zip code:32816, please refer to attached registration material and Occasionally, you may not be able to access MyMathLab via then please use the following back door: (with the same log in name and password) to get to MyMathLab. If you need any technical support with MyMathLab, please keep in mind that Pearson Publishing MML Technical Support Hotline (for students) is: (M-F, 8:00A.M-8:00P.M., Sun, 5:00P.M.-Midnight, EST). Since these assignments must be completed online, students will be expected to have access to a computer. These are required (and graded) on-line homework assignments corresponding to exercise problems in the textbook. On-line homework assignments can be repeated infinite number of times within the time period specified. All assignments will be due no later than 11:59P.M. on the due date. Due dates of on-line homeworks and on-line quizzes had been assigned by the course coordinator and modified by the course instructor and will be available to students via MyMathLab. Students are responsible for keeping track/record of his/her own on-line homeworks and on-line quizzes score/grade by printing out a hard copy of his/her gradebook record upon completion of each assignment. Students will also turn in a copy of his/her accumulated on-line assignment grades to the instructor on these dates:(sep. 3, Oct.1, Oct. 29, Nov. 26, and Dec. 3) In the unlikely event that the glitch in the system (for whatever reason) will prevent students from obtaining his/her correct on-line assignment grades at the end of the term, the 10% on-line assignment grade will take on the same score/grade as that of the in-class quiz average. In this case, two of the requirements under NC criteria with regard to on-line assignments will be disregarded. For each of the online homework assignments, there is an associated online quiz that needs to be completed in order to continue the progression into next section. On-line quiz questions come directly from the pool of assigned on-line homework problems. 4
5 *Final exam will be comprehensive and will cover the entire course material. This term, the final exam for this class will be on December 10, 2008, 10:00A.M.-12:50 P.M. There will be no make-up on the final exam. *Positive class participation, in the form of constructive or creative questions, answers, working on problems, or being punctual and courteous, is always strongly encouraged. Extra credit: Optional extra credit opportunities such as reading list, jeopardy, and various research topics (pertaining to mathematics or applications of mathematics ) will be given throughout the term. Any student may acquire a total of no more than 3 extra credit points per semester/term.
