1 Lake-Sumter Community College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number: STA 2023 Course Title: Elementary Statistics I CRN: (T TH) (M W) Credit: 3 Term: Fall 2011 Course Catalog Description: This course introduces the student to topics including measures of central tendency and spread, probability, random variables, binomial and normal probability distributions, confidence interval estimation, small sample inferences, and hypothesis testing. Other topics include correlation, simple linear regression, and an introduction to nonparametric statistics. You will need an access code to register which may be purchased from the book store on campus or directly on the site. The My Math Lab course ID for this course is brown Textbook and Other Course Materials: Use your Laker Mail address when registering for the course. If you have not activated your Laker Mail account, go to the LSCC homepage and follow the instructions. The print version of the text is optional (there is an ebook available in My Math Lab): Elementary Statistics, Triola, Addison Wesley, 2010, 11 th edition Technology and Online Computer Access Requirements: All students are required to use Laker Mail for official college communications. A calculator is required. If you do not have a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator then the TI-30 XS Multi View is recommended. 1
2 Course Objectives: (what the course will do) Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: (what the students take with them beyond this course) Academic Integrity: Important Information for Students with Disabilities: Privacy Policy (FERPA): Attendance/Withdrawal Policies: Withdrawal Deadline: Development of fundamental statistical methods including applications to business, social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering sciences. 1. The student will understand the basic principles of designing a study. 2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of descriptive statistics through performing and interpreting calculations, organizing raw data, and creating graphs and tables to display information, with and without the use of appropriate technology. 3. The student will be able to make sound inferences about a population based on procedures performed on sample data. 4. The student will use appropriate formulas and/or tables to determine the probability of events occurring using basic probability rules, the binomial probability distribution, and the normal probability distribution. The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. In the academic community, there is an ongoing assumption of academic integrity at all levels. There is the expectation that work will be independently thoughtful and responsible as to its sources of information and inspiration. Honesty is an appropriate consideration in other ways as well, including but not limited to the responsible use of library resources, responsible conduct in examinations, and the responsible use of the Internet. The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) is located on the Leesburg Campus, but arrangements can be made to meet with a student on any campus. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student s education records. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Regular attendance is essential to learn the material and succeed in this course. If you must miss class, you should contact a fellow student to find out what was covered, copy notes, etc. because you are responsible for what was covered. If you wish to withdraw from the course, it is your responsibility to go to the Admissions Office and do so officially, or you will receive your calculated course grade. The deadline for withdrawing from this course this semester is Monday, October 31,
3 Your grade is based on four components: tests, quizzes, online homework, and a cumulative final exam. Make-up tests will be given at the discretion of the instructor. You must have my permission to take a make-up test BEFORE the test is given to your class. Call or me prior to the test date and GET A RESPONSE from me before you make plans to take a make-up test. I may ask you to supply supporting documentation (such as a doctor s note) to justify the accommodation. Methods of Evaluation: NO make-up quizzes, online homework, or project will be allowed. Most quizzes will be administered through My Math Lab and must be completed by the due date & time. The lowest quiz score will be dropped and your remaining quizzes will be averaged for your quiz grade. ONLINE homework: A portion of your grade will be earned through the completion of online homework. This homework is assigned in My Math Lab and must be completed by the due date. Turn off all cell phone ringers and other non-required electronic devices (i.e. laptop, ipod, mp3, blackberry, etc) before class. Students using unauthorized electronic devices during class will be asked to leave and counted as absent. If you are late and I am giving a test, then you have only the remaining class time to complete the test, as do the students who were on time. If you are caught cheating, you will either fail the assignment/test/quiz or fail the course, at the discretion of the instructor. No warning will be given. 3
