M+ Guardian Email Firewall 1. Introduction This information is designed to help you efficiently and effectively manage unsolicited e mail sent to your e mail account, otherwise known as spam. MCCC now has a server in place that will scan all incoming messages for spam and viruses arriving from off campus that are destined for your e mail address. If a message is flagged as being spam it is stopped and quarantined before it reaches your mailbox. This is also true for a message arriving that contains a virus. This document will help you understand what you need to do with your quarantined messages. Anti spam definition updates are sent to us from the manufacturer several times throughout the day. When a message arrives on campus the anti spam server scans the messages for spam and/or viruses; if it is harmful it is sent to your quarantine area, if not it will pass through to your mailbox. Figure 1 illustrates this process. Your account may be setup to receive quarantine reports. This report can be used to release messages from your quarantine area that you want in your mailbox. You may also sign in to the quarantine area anytime to review messages that are marked as spam or virus infected. From your report or quarantine area you can release messages to your mailbox. The spam messages remain in your quarantine area for 14 days then it will be automatically deleted. The nicest feature of the Anti Spam program is that spam messages can be left alone and you don t have to do anything with them. They are automatically detected, sent to a list for your review, and unless you release them they will be deleted automatically. Figure 1
