M+ Guardian Email Firewall 1. Introduction This information is designed to help you efficiently and effectively manage unsolicited e mail sent to your e mail account, otherwise known as spam. MCCC now has a server in place that will scan all incoming messages for spam and viruses arriving from off campus that are destined for your e mail address. If a message is flagged as being spam it is stopped and quarantined before it reaches your mailbox. This is also true for a message arriving that contains a virus. This document will help you understand what you need to do with your quarantined messages. Anti spam definition updates are sent to us from the manufacturer several times throughout the day. When a message arrives on campus the anti spam server scans the messages for spam and/or viruses; if it is harmful it is sent to your quarantine area, if not it will pass through to your mailbox. Figure 1 illustrates this process. Your account may be setup to receive quarantine reports. This report can be used to release messages from your quarantine area that you want in your mailbox. You may also sign in to the quarantine area anytime to review messages that are marked as spam or virus infected. From your report or quarantine area you can release messages to your mailbox. The spam messages remain in your quarantine area for 14 days then it will be automatically deleted. The nicest feature of the Anti Spam program is that spam messages can be left alone and you don t have to do anything with them. They are automatically detected, sent to a list for your review, and unless you release them they will be deleted automatically. Figure 1

2. Logging into your Quarantine Area If you want to view messages that have been sent to your quarantine area, manage blocked or allowed senders, you need to login to your quarantine area. You can get to the quarantine area by opening your web browser to the following URL; http://aspam.monroeccc.edu/. After the page loads type in your e mail address, for example jsmith@monroeccc.edu, followed by your GroupWise password (Fig 2). Figure 2 3. Your Quarantine Area Once you re logged in you will see a listing of all the spam that was quarantined by the antispam server (Fig 3). If a message is in the list that you should have received then you can select the message and click release. Figure 3 4. Allow List

If by chance a message repeatedly gets marked as spam you can add that particular e mail address to your Allow List. Click Preferences in the upper right hand corner of the page. The next page that loads should be the preferences page, click on Allow List. The recommended action is to enter just one e mail address, for example bob@trusteddomain.com (Fig 4). If you want to allow messages from an entire domain (not recommended) you can select the Allowed Domains text box and type in the domain you want to trust. When you are finished with either of these actions click the add button. You will see your changes displayed if successful. To return back to the preferences page and save your changes click on the Save button. Figure 4 5. Block List If a message repeatedly is being sent to you that you don t want to receive anymore you can block a user in the same manner as trusting a user. Click Preferences in the upper right hand corner of the page. The next page that loads should be the preferences page, click on Block List. The recommended action is to enter just one e mail address, for example bob@blockeddomain.com (Fig 5). If you want to block messages from an entire domain (not recommended) you can select the Blocked Domains text box and type in the domain you want to block. You will see your

changes displayed if successful. To return back to the preferences page and save your changes click on the Save button. Figure 5 6. Quarantine Reports If you want to set your account up to receive daily quarantine reports that give a summary of spam that has accumulated during the previous day can you can do so by logging into your quarantine area (Section 2) and clicking on preferences in the upper right hand corner. After you ve done that you can choose to enable reports by pulling down the drop down box labeled Quarantine Report and setting it to Enabled. When you are finished click on the Save button to save all changes made. If and/or when your account is setup to receive an e mailed quarantine report it will contain a list of spam messages that are flagged as spam. When you open the message you will see a list of all spam messages that were quarantined (Fig 6).

If a message is here that shouldn t be in the quarantine area you can release it. Clicking Release will release the message from your quarantine area and allow it to enter your GroupWise inbox. Figure 6 Note: If you are receiving your quarantine report but it is blank, you will need to enable HTML viewing in GroupWise. Click Tools Options Double click Environment Make sure HTML is selected under Default Read View 7.
