Kristi Henderson, DNP, NP-BC, FAEN PROFESSIONAL BRIEF Kristi Henderson, DNP, NP-BC, FAEN is the Chief Advanced Practice Officer and Director of Telehealth for University of Mississippi Health Center based in Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Henderson focus is on improving and coordinating the healthcare delivery system with specific attention to advanced practice providers and telehealth. The role of advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, physician assistants) is critical in improving health outcomes at a lower cost. Her role as Director of Telehealth supports this aim. Her goal of fully implementing the TelEmergency Program will bring healthcare and education to patients. Nationally recognized for their innovative TelEmergency program, UMHC provides distance emergency care to rural communities via telemedicine at a reduced cost. Dr. Henderson and the Telehealth team are regularly consulted by other state healthcare leaders, physicians, nurses, journalists and members of the academic community to assist in replication and implementation of the UMHC program. Dr. Henderson has focused her research on disparities in health care quality, access to care and the impact of telemedicine on these issues. Additionally, she has research interests in misuse of the emergency department, utilization of advanced practice providers and HIV. She has published several papers and made multiple presentations on these topics at the local, state and national level. Dr. Henderson serves as an associate professor at the University of Mississippi School of Nursing where she coordinates a master s level nursing course and lectures on leadership in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program. She is active in state and national nursing organizations and she is a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing. She serves on the National Quality Forum steering committee on Regionalized Emergency Care which allows her the opportunity to contribute her expertise in utilization of telemedicine and advanced practice providers to improve access to emergency health care at a lower cost. Additionally, she serves on the Mississippi Blue Cross & Blue Shield Advisory Committee. Dr. Henderson builds her policy, research and leadership initiatives on a foundation of sixteen years in nursing, largely spent in the emergency department setting where she worked as a nurse and a dually certified family and acute care nurse practitioners. During her tenure as a bedside care provider, her work and volunteer efforts led to a number of local, state and national leadership positions within professional associations. She has been recognized for her contributions at the state and national level. Today much of her volunteer time is spent locally member of the Junior League of Jackson with a focus on health and educational disparities in Mississippi particularly with children. She also volunteers her clinical expertise at Mission First, a health clinic for low income families. She received her doctoral degree (DNP, the Doctor of Nursing Practice) with a focus on health leadership from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2010, her master s degree in nursing (MSN) from the Mississippi University for Women in 1997 and her bachelor s in nursing from Mississippi College in 1995. She maintains national certification for the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a family and acute care nurse practitioner.
