1 Position Statement for seat of Delegate to the AANA Education Committee Anyone that pays attention to the various social media sites, blogs, and vocal members knows that nurse anesthesia education is highly criticized and placed under a microscope. There are a lot of opinions as to what should be done concerning our programs and the requirements and standards that are placed upon them. Anyone involved in the education of students understands that this is a complicated issue. It is the committee s responsibility to continually analyze and critique our nurse anesthesia educational system. As a delegate to the AANA Education Committee, I would work tirelessly to represent the programs and the students, but more importantly, the profession. I think it is the job of this committee to further the AANA mission of patient safety, practice excellence, and the profession through the betterment of all of our training programs. The profession is only as strong as the graduates that our programs are producing. Faculty often have little if any training in education, yet are expected to train a high level provider in a very short amount of time. As a committee member, I would work hard to develop and provide excellent opportunities for growth and to support to our program s educators. The ongoing development of our educators only works to improve our profession by producing a stronger and more capable student. Our programs and profession need strong leadership and direction from this committee. If chosen, I will strive to be a relentless advocate for our profession through the betterment of our education process. I truly believe that this committee has a unique role that impacts the foundation of our profession and it would be an honor to serve if chosen.
2 Biographical Sketch I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve in both the didactic and clinical instruction of nurse anesthesia students since 2009 for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville s Nurse Anesthesia Concentration in Knoxville, Tennessee. I am a full-time practitioner as well as a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor with the nurse anesthesia concentration. After completing my undergraduate degree in nursing at Carson-Newman University in 2001, I obtained both a Master of Science in Nursing and Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2008 and 2012 respectively. From the time I was a student, I have had interest in nurse anesthesia education. As a student, attending two Assembly of School Faculty meetings was what sparked the desire to become an educator. My research focus thus far has been the use of various instruments for nurse anesthesia student evaluation and applicant selection. I have been a member of both the AANA and the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists since I was a student. I have had the privilege in serving TANA as a student representative, PR committee representative, and now the District 5 education representative. As a delegate to the AANA Education Committee, I would bring strong leadership, dedication, and advocacy for our students and the educators that work tirelessly to make our profession strong.
