Mary is the first Australian saint, the patron of our Archdiocese and founder of the Sisters of St Joseph. Mary is a model of Chris an faith and tenacity in the face of opposi on and injus ce (o en stemming from the church she served). Mary always responded to injus ce and cruelty with quiet dignity, respect and prayer, seeking and receiving God s grace to always act with charity and kindness. Many of our young people joined together on Friday for Emergence Night a night of sharing faith and prayer. We thank Fr Sunil for his a endance and also thank Mrs Cathy Barre, Mr John Sla ery, Mr Mark Davidson, Mrs Rachel Whitaker, Mr Sefo Mikaele And Mr Wong Kee Ilalio for their me in providing this faith filled opportunity for our young people. On Friday the middle and senior years par cipated in the Athle cs carnival. It was a fun day punctuated with friendly compe on in the various events and between the houses. Thank you to Ms Emma Allam for her always superb organisa on of these events and well done to our students for their enthusiasm and comraderies on the day. Mr Mulhearn, Ms Andzue, Mrs Usher, Mr Davidson and the year 5 and 6 children are engaging in prac cal learning with the development of units of work on growing fresh produce and cooking healthy meals from this produce. It is great to see the hands on learning occurring and the wonderful gardens being set up in our College grounds. We invite our community to join us next Saturday 16 th August at 10am at our Indigenous Gardens (Top Oval) for a Welcoming Event for our community storytelling project Our Families Our Stories. Our local Aboriginal Elder and Tradi onal Owner, Aunty Kerry will conduct a Welcome to Country ceremony on the day. We will have ac vi es for the children and food and drink will be provided. We would love to see you there. We thank parents for their con nued pa ence in the car park. We can see small improvements each holidays and we are in the process of engaging builders to finalise the car park in the September holidays. Thank you to all who behave appropriately and model for our young people adherence to road rules, safety, pa ence and good manners at peak mes in the morning and a ernoons. We remind parents the drive way is not be used to drop off or collect students. This week incorrect use of the driveway resulted in an accident and damage to vehicles. This could easily have been injury to one of our children. For the safety of all our children please do the right thing. Book Week: The theme for this year's Book Week is Connect to Reading. One of the ac vi es being planned for the P 6 students to celebrate this week is a Crazy Hat Parade. The idea comes from one of the short listed books, The Swap. The children will be asked to create a hat to wear on the parade. The hat can be made of any suitable material and be any size, shape or colour it just has to be crazy. There are many YouTube clips with instruc ons on how to make paper hats and these can then be painted/ decorated as you like. Another op on could be to decorate an old hat that you have at home. The Crazy Hat Parade will be during Book Week which for us will be the week beginning 25 August. Library News Scrabble: There are now only eight students le in our Scrabble Challenge. Azaria, Kobi, Run, Malyka, Ebony, Kalani, Natasha and Sri have each made it to the finals and are now playing off in a Round Robin compe on. The players are fiercely compe ve but all rivalry is played out in a friendly and sportsman like manner. At the moment, any one of the finalists has a chance of winning the compe on. Middle Years Matters @ SFC 2014! Our year to be seen Welcome to Week 4! The term has certainly begun at a fast pace and doesn t look like slowing down at all over the coming weeks! We do have a long weekend ahead of us though, Monday 10 th August, as we celebrate EKKA week and the amazing gifts, talents and beauty that make up life in the country. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK LAUNCH: On the 30 th of July 2014 the Year 9 students of St Francis College were invited to attend the Catholic Education Week Launch celebration at St Laurence s College. This celebration was a time to reflect on all the things that Catholic schools offer. The Catholic Archbishop Mark Coleridge, Premier Campbell Newman and Education Minister John Paul Langbroek all attended this event to recognise the launch of Catholic Education Week. Throughout the ceremony we were able to watch many performances such as the singing of the multi-school choir and a ballet performance from students. To conclude the ceremony the Archbishop and Premier presented seven 2014 Spirit of Catholic Education Awards to highly regarded contributors to Catholic Education. As students of St Francis we were honoured to have this opportunity to represent our College at such a major event. We learnt about how Catholic schools really make a difference in students education. Kasey Seawright (Year 9) Sr. Lee TRINDER PARK VISIT: This week Mr. Bruggemann s Year 8 PC group spent time engaging with residents from Trinder Park Aged Care facility. This was a valuable real life learning experience for the students as they interacted with the elderly residents finding out about their life stories, sharing their own school experiences, playing games with them and learning the skills of face to face communication. We thank the residents for coming to St. Francis College and sharing their time and stories with us. Celebrating National Science Week Food for our Future Science Feeding the A number of competitions will begin next week in preparation for the celebration of National Science Week at St. Francis College. Keep your eyes open for these and have a go at them. This year we were successful in receiving a small grant to help organize and provide resources for our Science Day activities. We look forward to an exciting and fun filled day of science learning on Wednesday August 20 th. Sustainability Group: This week our Sustainability group will begin preparations for carrying out an initial energy audit on some areas of the school. This will involve use of an Infra-red thermometer (to measure the temperature of areas), Power Usage Meter (to measure the amount of energy used by appliances) and a Lux Meter (to measure light intensity). By gathering data and examining practices in relation to energy conservation and use, we hope to be able to set a plan to achieve our aim of reducing our energy consumption by 10%. GROWTH MINDSET Remember intelligence is not fixed: Effort and persistence when facing challenges are important characteris cs of a successful student. Tell your child, smart is not what you are; smart is what you work to become. Having a growth mindset has many benefits. Here are two reasons to have a growth mindset today: 1. Improve Your Sense of Self-Worth: Having a growth mindset encourages you to not look at a deficit as a deficit in ability but one of learning and that is one which can easily be fulfilled. This naturally has an impact on your sense of self-worth. 2. Disregard Stereotypes: People with growth mindsets don t let labeling and stereotypes hold them back from their goals and dreams. FAMILY GROUP ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Last Friday the 7 12 students had their Family Group Athle cs Carnival. It was a great day for Athle cs and all students were dressed in their family group colours ready to support their family group. All students did their best and competed in as many events as possible. A special men on to Hiki Latu, Lisa Makaohi and D Artagnan Koeun. Hiki broke a record for Open Girls shot put. She threw 10.38m. She also managed to break the Discus record and threw 29.39m. Great work Hiki! Lisa also broke two records. The shot put record with a throw of 9.64m and the Discus record with a throw of 24.12m. Awesome work Lisa! D Artagnan broke the 14 years 400 metre record running it in 1:00.45. A fantas c day of broken records! Well done! This year we con nued the Tug of War Compe on at the end of the carnival and Yaraay were the ul mate family group winner. Congratula ons to YARAAY who have once again taken the clean sweep for Sport this year and just got up over Kurrawa in the final events for the day. 3lements Mul sport Club Athletes from Calamvale and the surrounding districts are invited to a end a public mee ng to discuss the establishment of an exci ng new community mul sport club. Focusing on the Triathlon disciplines of Swimming, Cycling and Running, the club will operate coached squad based training opportuni es for athletes of all ages. The clubs namesake is based on the training elements of Triathlon; through Water (the swim), Wind (the cycle), and Earth (the run), the 3lements Club s vision is to create the Fire within the athlete through specifically tailored squad based training, u lising training environments around the Calamvale and local suburbs. Community News What a busy me it is in our College and our Community Centre! There are so many opportuni es for our families to get involved in interes ng and fun ac vi es. Some families had a fun me with our College chef this week, cooking a yummy and nutri ous family meal. The ladies were all very happy a er the class with their dinners packed to take home. Tammie our Hub Program Leader has been organising some great ac vi es in the Community Centre. Also, Lena our storyteller has been connec ng with different people and storytelling.
