Our construction courses provide excellent opportunities to gain a qualification and skills within a challenging and rewarding industry. There are a number of career paths and many job prospects both locally and nationally. The industry is fast moving. Construction methods, techniques and technologies develop rapidly and legislation is always changing, this is reflected in our course delivery. Construction covers public and private housing, public buildings such as hospitals and schools, commercial and industrial buildings, and infrastructure such as roads, bridges and power plants. The industry repairs, maintains and refurbishes existing buildings and installs services such as power and ventilation in new and existing buildings. Construction is project based and good teamwork, forward planning and organisational skills are essential. Work involves collaboration with many specialists across the sector, together with clients and the general public. Most construction workers enjoy the variety the sector offers and the satisfaction of being able to see the finished product of their work. Our Honours Degrees are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). The CIOB accreditation officially recognises our BSc (Hons) Construction Management course as an educational programme that promotes excellence in the built environment. HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering) A broad-based course designed to develop the learners knowledge, understanding, skills and the awareness necessary, to provide them with the potential to progress to technical, supervisory and managerial positions in building services engineering. Who is this course for? This course is for existing plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical operatives who want to enhance their career opportunities within the building services engineering industry. Particularly for individuals that will become responsible for the design, installation, operation and monitoring of the mechanical, electrical and public health systems required for the safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly operation of modern buildings. description The programme will provide broad based core studies which will develop skills and knowledge to manage, design and install building services engineering systems. Optional modules will develop specialist pathways, particularly in Electrical Installation and Mechanical Services Engineering. This course is taught through a mixture of group and individual classroom activity, guided assignments, presentations, case studies and formal examinations. Building services engineers influence the architecture of a building and play a significant role in the sustainability and energy demand of a building. Within this area, new roles are emerging. For example, in the areas of renewable energy, sustainability, low carbon technologies and energy management. Applying for a place All applications for entry to Colchester Institute full-time higher education courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS code is shown next to the course details. Direct applications You may apply directly to Colchester Institute using one of our own application forms ONLY IF: (a) it is your intention to study part-time or (b) you are currently undertaking a full-time degree at Colchester Institute and wish to transfer internally to another degree or (c) you are applying for postgraduate study. UCAS will receive applications for entry in 2015 from 1st September 2014. You are advised to apply as soon as possible and preferably before the first UCAS deadline of 15th January 2015. Art and Design courses at Colchester Institute have a deadline of 24th March 2015. CAREER GUIDANCE WELFARE UCAS application fee The application fee for 2015 was not available CLASSROOM at the time of going to print. The fee for 2014 was 23 for a multiple LEARNING application and 12 for a SUPPORT single choice. Employed applicants If you are to be sponsored by your employer to study on a course with a UCAS code, you must apply through UCAS. Fees INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT PLANNING Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in 2012-2013 resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees. Universities and colleges that want to charge more than the basic fee (level not yet set for 2015-2016) must provide additional support to promote access to disadvantaged students. At the time of printing, Colchester Institute had not set course fees and support levels for 2015-2016. Once we have done so, we will update the fees pages on our website. We therefore recommend you consult our website for this information before you submit your UCAS application for entry to study in autumn 2015. These changes apply to UK and EU students wishing to study higher education in England. Student Loans and Grants FINANCE How much money will I need and how do I get it? Budgeting for student life is a tricky thing. The key is to be aware of the student loans and grants that are available to you, and to make sure you apply for them in good time.
