14 September 2011 Trimble Handheld Computers: Connecting to the Internet Through a Bluetooth-enabled Mobile Phone This support note describes how to connect the following Trimble handheld computers to the Internet using a mobile phone as a modem: GeoExplorer 6000 series, GeoExplorer 3000 series, 2008 series, Trimble Nomad, and Trimble Recon handhelds, powered by the Microsoft Windows Mobile version 6.x operating system. Note: For technical assistance with your mobile phone, contact your mobile phone carrier. Requirements A Bluetooth enabled mobile phone with DUN (Dial-up Networking) capability A data-plan with your mobile carrier Depending on the model of your phone, and your carrier, you may also require: The Trimble Dial-String Editor application The custom dial string for your phone and carrier Some phones/carriers do not require a custom dial string to establish an Internet connection. Your mobile phone carrier will be able to provide you with the specific connection details for your model of phone, which may include: A username and password The carrier s access point name (APN) The Phone Number required to establish a connection Any additional required dial string Procedures 1. If your mobile phone carrier requires a custom dial string, install and set up the Trimble Dial String Editor. 2. Set up the connection to the Internet: a. b. Set up a new Internet connection. c. Connect to the Internet. Installing the Trimble Dial String Editor If your mobile phone carrier does not require a custom dial string, go directly to Setting up a Bluetooth connection to your mobile phone. 1. Download DialStringEditor.CAB: a. From an office computer, go to http://www.trimble.com/support. b. Click on the name of your device. c. Click Downloads. d. Click Dial String Editor (Windows Mobile 6, 6.1, 6.5) to download the file DialStringEditor.CAB. 2. Close any applications or files that are running on the handheld. 3. Copy the file DialStringEditor.CAB to the handheld. 4. On the handheld, tap the file to install the application: 5. Tap Yes. The handheld reboots. 6. Select / Settings / Connections / Dial String Editor: www.trimble.com Page 2

7. Enter the custom dial string for your combination of phone and carrier in the format: +cgdcont=1,"ip","apn" Where APN is the Access Point Name of your carrier: 8. Tap Apply to save your changes. 9. Tap OK to close the Dial String Editor. When you set up a New Internet Connection to an external modem, the custom dial string that you just saved is sent to the modem when you attempt to connect to the Internet. Setting up a Bluetooth connection to your mobile phone 1. Make sure that Bluetooth technology is enabled on your mobile phone and that it is discoverable. 2. On the handheld, select / Settings / Connections / Bluetooth. Note: For alternative connection methods, refer to the User Guide for your Trimble handheld. 3. Tap Add new device to search for your mobile phone: www.trimble.com Page 3

4. Once the handheld finishes searching for available Bluetooth devices to connect to, tap the name of your device to select it: 5. Tap Next. Enter a passcode to establish a secure connection between your Trimble device and the phone. You must enter the same passcode on the phone; the phone may prompt you to add the handheld to a list of paired/saved devices: 6. Confirm the passcode on your mobile phone and then tap Next: 7. Confirm that Dialup Networking is selected and then tap Finish to complete setting up the partnership. www.trimble.com Page 4

Setting up a new Internet connection 1. On the handheld, select / Settings / Connections / Connections. 2. Under the heading My ISP, tap Add a new modem connection: 3. Enter a name for the new Internet connection and then select Bluetooth from the Select a modem list. Tap Next: 4. From the list, choose the Bluetooth device that you set up earlier and then tap Next: 5. Enter the number to establish a data connection provided by your carrier (for example, *99#). Include any numbers you need to dial for an outside line, and the local area code. Tap Next: www.trimble.com Page 5

6. Enter the username and password for your Internet account. (If you do not enter the username or password in this step, you must enter it each time you connect to the Internet.) Note: Trimble recommends that you confirm that the phone can access the Internet directly. If necessary, contact the cellular phone provider and confirm whether you must enter a user name, password, and domain details when connecting an external device to the phone using Bluetooth dialup networking. Note: Unless you have been instructed otherwise by your phone carrier, do not change any Advanced settings 7. Tap Finish. Connecting to the Internet Do one of the following: To connect automatically using the default ISP connection, run an application that requires an Internet connection (for example, Pocket Internet Explorer). To connect manually: a. Tap the Connection icon in the navigation bar: b. Tap Settings. c. Tap the Connections icon. d. Under the heading My ISP, tap Manage existing connections. www.trimble.com Page 6

e. Tap and hold the connection that you want to use to connect to the Internet: f. From the pop-up menu, select Connect. Note: If you did not specify a username or password when you set up the connection, the Network Log On dialog appears. Unless the phone provider confirmed that you must enter user name, password, and domain settings to access the Internet, tap Finish on the right softkey without entering any information in this screen. Otherwise, enter the required information and then tap Finish. To confirm that the handheld is connected to the phone, or to check the status of the connection at any time, tap the Connectivity icon in the title bar. The notification shows the name of the current connection, and the time elapsed since the connection was made. To hide the notification, tap Hide. Note: If you have an active Wireless LAN connection, the connectivity icon appears as instead. To check the connection status at any time, tap or in the title bar. To end the connection at any time, tap or in the title bar and then tap Disconnect. www.trimble.com Page 7
