Download an FTP server program for Windows Mobile 5.0 software and install this onto the Trimble handheld device. The version that was used when writing this document is PE FTP server. You can download a trial version from When you have downloaded the software, you must do the following: Configure the Trimble Handheld Configure the Ricoh camera Configure the FTP Application on the device Take photos and transfer them to the handheld This document is for informational purposes only and is not a legally binding agreement or offer. 2 Configure the Trimble handheld To configure your Trimble handheld so that it can connect to the Ricoh camera, do the following: Step 1: Configure the handheld s network settings Step 2: Set up an ad-hoc wireless network Step 1: Configure the handheld s network settings To configure the Trimble handheld, set the Network adaptor so that it can use a private static IP address to connect to another device (in this case the Ricoh camera): 1. Select Start/Settings/Connections/Network Cards. 2. Select the Network Adaptors tab. 3. Select one of the following: If you are connecting to a Trimble GeoExplorer 2005 series handheld, select Wireless B Network Driver or GeoExplorer g Wireless If you are connecting to a Trimble Recon or Trimble Ranger handheld, select Marvell XXXXX Wireless Card 4. Select Use specific IP address. Warning: If you configure the Trimble handheld to connect using a static IP address, this may disrupt any previous connections. To make sure that you will connect correctly to an access point once you have finished connecting to the camera, change Use specific IP address to Use server-assigned IP address. 5. In the IP address field, enter Note: If preferred, you can use another private static IP address, for example 10.x.x.x or x.x (where x denotes a number). 6. Click the subnet mask and check that it is Click OK. Step 2: Set up an ad-hoc wireless network An ad-hoc (device-to-device) wireless network enables the Trimble handheld to transmit the appropriate signal for the camera: 1. In the Network Cards/Wireless tab select Add New. 2. Enter the network name (in the format ESS-ID, for example TrimbleRicoh) that you want to use as your ad-hoc network. The network name identifies which network the camera will connect to in order to transfer photos. This identifier will be broadcast out to all devices within range, so it is recommended that no confidential information (for example, phone numbers, addresses, or names) is included as part of the name. Page 2
3 3. Check that the This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection check-box is selected and then tap Next. 4. Configure any authentication or encryption settings. Do one of the following: If you do not want to set encryption settings for the camera, ensure that you change the Data Encryption field on the handheld to Disabled. If you want to use encryption, use the following settings: Authentication: Open Data Encryption: WEP Key Index: 1 Specify a valid network key Note: You must enter a network key in either hexadecimal (using only characters 0-9 and A-F) or ASCII format (any character). If you use hexadecimal format, the key can be 10 or 26 characters in length. If you use ASCII format, the key can be 5 or 13 characters in length. 5. Make a note of the settings, as you will use them again when you configure the camera. 6. Click Next and then click Finish. 7. If Connecting does not appear next to the network name, tap and hold on the Network name and select Connect from the pop-up menu. Page 3
4 Configure the Ricoh camera To configure the Ricoh camera to connect to the Trimble handheld, do the following: Step 1: Setting up your computer to connect to the Ricoh camera Step 2: Configuring the camera s connection settings Step 1: Setting up your computer to connect to the Ricoh camera To install the latest camera drivers on a computer running the Microsoft Windows XP operating system: 1. Download the Ricoh driver update from navigate to the Support / Download area for your field device. Extract the files contained in the.zip file to a temporary location on the computer. 2. The Detailed Setups for selection dialog appears: 3. To add a new connection, click Add. 4. Enter the name of the new connection. Enter the IP address of the Trimble handheld device in the Server Name field, for example, Enter an appropriate user name and password in the relevant fields. Make a note of them as you need them when you configure the FTP server. 6. Click Apply and then click OK. 7. In the Caplio Setting screen, click Transfer to camera. The camera can now connect to the Trimble handheld over a wireless LAN connection. Configuring settings directly on the camera If you need to modify any configuration settings after they have been sent to the camera, you can make the changes directly on the camera. 1. Remove the USB cable from the camera. 2. Turn on the camera and then press Menu. 3. Use the arrow keys to select the Exp Set tab. 4. Scroll down to Change COM. Press the right arrow key and ensure that W-LAN is configured. Page 11
12 5. Scroll to Send to. Press the right arrow key and select the name of the camera network that has been created. The settings can be edited from this screen. 6. Press OK, and then press Menu to finish. Configure the FTP application on the device When you have set up the camera and the handheld, you need an appropriate File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server application so that the handheld can receive the images that are sent wirelessly from the camera: 1. Open the FTP server application on your Trimble handheld. Trimble recommends Vieka PEFtpd as it is very easy to use. 2. To configure the server application, from the User tab, click Add 3. Check that all the settings match the settings that you have entered when setting up the handhed and the camera (for example, the user name and password). 4. Enter an appropriate folder to store the images (for example, \My Documents\My Pictures). 5. Make sure that any directories are setup with read/write access settings. For more information about configuring the FTP server application, refer to the server help. Page 12
13 Take photos and transfer them to the handheld 1. Turn on the Ricoh 500SE-W camera and take a photo. 2. Press the Play button on the back of the camera, select the photo that you want to transfer and then press the Menu button. 3. In the PLBK STGS tab, scroll to the File Send option. 4. Press the right arrow key and then select the network that you created with the Caplio software setting application. 5. Press the Menu/Ok button. 6. To send the current image, select Send One. The camera will attempt to connect to the Trimble handheld. Once connected the file will transfer automatically to the folder configured in the FTP server software.
