Corrado, PhD Commissioner, NYC Department for the Aging Michael Markowitz, MA Director of the Institute for Retired Professionals, The New School 9:45 11:00 AM KEYNOTE ADDRESS Finding Your Resilience When Dealing with Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma Flora Colao, LCSW Introduction by Risa Breckman, LCSW-R, Executive Director, NYC Elder Abuse Center The keynote presentation will explore the impact and management of burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma on practitioners in the field of elder abuse. Strategies to recognize and address symptoms as well as enhance capacity to meet clients needs will be addressed. Flora Colao, LCSW, is a nationally renowned and internationally recognized social worker and therapist, specializing in the treatment of abuse, trauma and vicarious traumatization. Her pioneering work in the treatment of victims includes founding the first Manhattan hospital based rape victim program at St. Vincent s Catholic Medical Center and developing the first program to use self-defense training as a therapeutic intervention for juvenile crime victims. She is a highly respected author and advocate, who has served as an expert witness and consultant for federal, state and local agencies serving crime victims. Ms. Colao has also appeared in several television specials and documentaries.

MORNING WORKSHOPS 11:15 AM 12:45 PM 1. Using Breath and Meditation for Stress Relief An experiential learning experience with facilitated breath and meditation practices. Participants will learn how to use simple breath and meditation techniques to alleviate stress in all areas of life. Roadmap to Change: Strategic Planning for Elder Justice The groundbreaking 2014 Elder Justice Roadmap Project and Report provides recommendations at the practice, organizational and policy levels. Opportunities for collaboration and new multidisciplinary partnerships among elder abuse professionals will be identified. Reaching Vulnerable Populations CLE Vulnerability to abuse and exploitation may be exacerbated by social marginalization. Cultural and legal obstacles that hinder identification, engagement and resolution of the problem, particularly for undocumented individuals, will be explored. Healing through Spirituality Spirituality facets include awareness, gratitude, compassion and loving kindness towards yourself and others. Working with Law Enforcement This panel will focus on outreach, training and coordination between law enforcement agencies and community based providers to address elder abuse cases. Evicting the Abuser CLE Resolution of abuse may be more complicated when the abuser and victim live together. This workshop will examine the legal issues which arise when an elder abuse victim seeks to remove an abuser from a house or apartment. AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS 2:00 3:30 PM 7. Worker Safety Home visits are an invaluable, yet potentially risk-laden strategy for informing elder abuse work. Participants will learn safety basics, how to assess danger, and ways to de-escalate potentially explosive situations. Resources at the Office of Victim Services The Office of Victim Services provides a wide range of services and support for eligible crime victims, essential to helping elderly victims of abuse as they strive for independence and safety. An overview of these resources will be presented. Working with Cognitively Impaired and their Families Cognitive impairment may increase vulnerability to abuse and exploitation. Individual and family interventions to improve outcomes will be presented. Guardianship Benefits and Limitations CLE Guardianship may be an option for resolving exploitation. Participants will review client eligibility, the application process, and other alternatives to assist elderly victims. Prosecuting Fraud and Neglect Cases CLE Financial fraud and active neglect present particular challenges faced by prosecutors and civil attorneys in responding to difficult types of abuse. The presentation will cover approaches used by criminal law enforcement and legal advocates to pursue remedies and resolve the abuse.
