3 Ulster County Elder Abuse Conference Topics Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the BRC, Kingston NY A- Forensic Accounting Forensic accounting can be a key component to combating Elder Abuse, especially financial abuse. It is the specialty area of accountancy that analyzes lifestyles and reviews issues relating to criminal matters that typically arise in the aftermath of fraud. Sean Glander, MBA, is a forensic accountant from the accounting firm of Vanacore, DeBenedictus, DiGovanni & Weddell, LLP. He is experienced in litigation support, law enforcement assistance and investigative services. B- Tenant/Landlord Rights Tenant s Rights to Habitable and Safe Housing is the main focus of this presentation. It will cover the law and practice of evictions in the Town, Village and City Courts in Ulster County. t Federal programs for housing assistance and the Section 8 voucher programs and the NY State programs for Low Income Tax Credit Housing will also be covered. Peter M. Frank, Esq. is a senior staff attorney at the Kingston office Legal Services of the Hudson Valley since He graduated from Harvard Law School in His practice at Legal Services focuses on Housing and Homelessness Prevention, Foreclosure prevention and Consumer Law. Lauren W. Sheeley, Esq. Has been a Staff Attorney at Legal Services of the Hudson Valley since 2011, prior to which she worked at Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York. She is currently the Housing Attorney in the Kingston office where she provides eviction defense representation and will soon be transitioning into the position of Attorney in Charge of the Ulster County office. C- What Power do you Give Away when Appointing a Power of Attorney? This presentation will focus on the Power of Attorney: what it is, what it can do for you and how you can protect against abuse of power by your agent. Erica Halwick, Esq. is an attorney with the Law Office of Kathleen H. Dittus in Kingston focusing in the areas of Elder Law, Trusts and Estates, Medicaid Planning and Asset Protection. D- Everything you need to know about an Article 81 Guardianship. What is an Article 81 guardianship and when are such guardianships proceedings appropriate? This presentation will also look at alternatives to filing for guardianship. It will include legal standards used by the Courts in deciding to appoint a guardian and duties and responsibilities of a court appointed guardian. Wendy Ricks, Esq. has been a practicing attorney for 25 years in private practice as well as government service.. She has been the supervising attorney at the Ulster County Department of Social Services since 1/1/15 and previously was a staff attorney. Wendy also previously practiced as an Assistant District Attorney, an Assistant County Attorney and a Town Justice. Carol Pressman, Esq. Has worked as an attorney with New York State Mental Hygiene Legal Service for over 16 years. She has participated in over four hundred guardianships in various roles serving Ulster, Greene, Sullivan and Columbia Counties.

4 E- Identity Theft This presentation will deal with Scams, Identity Theft and Fraud. It will cover how to identify a scam, what is identity theft and what to do if you are a victim. It will also cover how to be proactive in protecting your assets. Leita C. King, MSW joined the Lifespan team in January 2013 as a Social Worker with the Elder Abuse Prevention Program and Scam Prevention Coordinator. Prior to joining Lifespan, Leita served as Social Worker with the Northern Adirondack Medical Home; Training Specialist with the Center for Development of Human Services and Child Protective Investigator with the Oswego County Department of Social Services F-Elder Abuse Screening Tools - A problem can't be solved until it is recognized as a problem. Screening tools allow professionals to determine if there is potential abuse in the lives of the seniors they serve. The new collaboration efforts of Institute for Family Health and UC Office for the Aging will be explored. Various alternative screening processes will be examined including screening tools available for use by home health care providers. Elizabeth Mitchell, Upstate Regional Director for Psychosocial Services for the Institute of Family Health is a licensed Master's level Social Worker. She has been with the Institute for Family Health for 8 years and is the lead in this OFA and IFH collaboration. Kelly McMullen, Director of Ulster County Office for the Aging has a Master s Degree in Psychology. She was with the Ulster County Mental Health Department for 11 years previously. She has a deep commitment to serving vulnerable County residents. G- Smart Seniors Latest Trends In Elder Fraud: how the scams work, the warning signs, and what to do if you suspect that an older adult is being victimized. The goal is to help seniors avoid becoming victims of fraud. Gary Brown, Statewide Elder Abuse Coordinator for New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. Mr. Brown is Chair of the Westchester Elder Abuse Coalition, serves on the county's Multidisciplinary Team on Elder Abuse, and is a member of the Elder Financial Exploitation Advisory Board of the National Adult Protective Services Association H- Preventing Financial Abuse This presentation will define financial abuse and review how to spot signs of potential problems. The presenter will outline very clear steps you can take to avoid problems for yourself and family members. Kathryn A. Ferrusi, Senior Community Relations Coordinator at Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (HVFCU). Ms Ferrusi presents financial workshops to a variety of community organizations throughout Ulster, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam counties. Annually she speaks to over 1,500 people about topics pertaining to good money management, identity theft awareness, and preventing financial abuse. K- The Appropriate use of Psychotropic Drugs vs. Chemical Restraint As people age they might exhibit alterations in mood, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and/or depression. Many of these conditions eventually get treated with medications. Three presenters from Archcare at Ferncliff Nursing Home will present different perspectives on the topic including considerations before using medications and how to assess proper medication use for older adults. Carl Kelly, is a Nursing Home Administrator and Executive Director for Archcare at Ferncliff, a 328 Bed Residential Health Care Facility. He has practiced Nursing Home Administration for the past 25 Years. Sandy Perrotta, is a Director of Nursing and Diane Fischer, is a licensed pharmacist and pharmacy consultant.
