4 Meet Your Distinguished Faculty Martha D. Burkett directs the Lawyers & Judges Assistance Program (LJAP), which helps lawyers, judges, law students and their family members who are experiencing problems related to chemical dependency, depression, anxiety, stress, or other life problems that bring about impairment. She holds a master s degree in public administration, as well as counseling education and counseling psychology. She is a licensed professional counselor and a nationally certified counselor. She completed graduate certification in holistic health and is a master addictions counselor, a certified auricular acudetox specialist, and an advanced-level board certified interventionist. She was previously a substance use disorder therapist at Longford Care Unit in Grand Rapids. Celeste Clarkson has over 15 years experience with the State of Michigan. She has worked in the Enforcement Section for the Bureau of Commercial Services, in what is now the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, and most recently with the Michigan Gaming Control Board as an investigator in its Supplier Licensing Section. She began working with the Department of Community Health in December Ms. Clarkson was previously a dispatcher, corrections officer, detective, and road patrol officer with the Ingham County Sheriff s Office and the Lansing Township Police Department. She also served as an Assistant Jail Administrator with the Ingham County Sheriff s Office. Brian Fenech is a criminal defense attorney who represents clients in misdemeanor and felony drug cases throughout the State. He has advised hundreds of medical marijuana patients and caregivers in Michigan since the Act has been enacted and has secured dismissals in matters of first impression in Michigan District Courts dealing with medical marijuana issues, including possession charges and probation violations. Mr. Fenech has also consulted for entrepreneurs seeking to start various medical marijuana related businesses in Michigan, and is a member of the NORML Legal Committee. Richard L. Hurford has focused his practice since 1980 on employment matters and the representation of corporate clients in litigation and claims in state and federal courts and administrative agencies. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Hurford had been the Director of Litigation for Masco Corporation, a Michigan based Fortune 200 Company that manufactures products for the home. Although an employment law specialist, Mr. Hurford managed and litigated all types of cases throughout the United States and Europe. Michael Komorn is an experienced litigator with nearly two decades in criminal law defense. He is a recognized expert in emerging areas of the law related to all aspects of the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act. He represents patients, caregivers, physicians, attorneys and business owners. His perspectives have appeared throughout the news, including: The Detroit News, WWJ Newsradio 950, WMYD-TV 20 and Michigan Lawyer s Weekly. He is a member of NORML s legal committee and is a lifetime member of the organization. He is on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Medical Marihuana Association and Green Trees of Detroit. Michelle Komorn is a criminal defense attorney specializing in the Michigan Medical Marihuana Law. She regularly consults with patients, caregivers, physicians, and business owners about the Medical Marihuana Law. Michelle also works very closely with Green Trees of Detroit as their staff attorney and speaks regularly at several compassion clubs. Michelle works with her brother Michael, who is a recognized expert in this field and who has taken on countless cases involving patients and caregivers. Greg Schmid has over 23 years of legal experience. He also holds a Michigan real estate broker s license, and has expertise in all aspects of real estate law. He has advised and represented thousands of criminal defendants in district court, circuit court, and federal court, defending cases in misdemeanor and felony cases ranging from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and possession, manufacture, and delivery of marijuana and other controlled substances. Mr. Schmid has drafted, prepared, and prosecuted dozens of citizen petitions for constitutional and statutory initiatives, and is a public policy expert on state and federal constitutional law. William W. Vertes has extensive, broad-based experience in medical malpractice litigation, birth trauma defense, and healthcare law. He also leads his firm s medical marijuana practice. Since joining his firm in 1983, Mr. Vertes has defended hospitals and physicians in multiple high profile and substantial damage trials. He has also represented physicians in employment disputes, handled corporate compliance matters, represented hospitals facing Medicaid Audits, and served as an arbitrator on several Alternative Dispute Resolution panels. He currently works with healthcare organizations, physician groups, state and local authorities, and diverse business practices to comply with and develop policies regarding the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act.
