2 Denver District Attorney Strategic Overview Mission: To professionally and completely prosecute crimes and investigate potential crimes on behalf of the people of the State of Colorado and in doing so, do justice, advocate victims' rights and advise and consult in the deterrence and prevention of crime; to ensure the open, evenhanded and humane administration of justice. Training law enforcement agencies that investigate or present cases in our jurisdiction regarding state law and the policies and procedures promulgated by our office regarding such laws and investigations. Continue to build upon the successful DNA-based projects by seeking ways to expand upon DNA technology in the investigation and prosecution of crimes. Work collaboratively with the Denver criminal bench, Denver Sheriff s Department, Denver County Court staff and others in the Denver County Justice Center to ensure dockets and trials run efficiently and to seek ways to further increase judicial efficiency while continuing to prosecute cases proficiently

7 2014 Budget Decisions for District Attorney Key Expansion Proposals Title: Witness Protection Investigator 1 FTE Description: Create and fund a permanent, full-time position from a previously grant-funded position, to provide protection to victims and witnesses of crimes. Position is responsible for performing threat assessments, safety planning, and emergency relocation assistance. Financial Impact: $93,586 Title: Program Coordinator 1 FTE Description: Create and fund a permanent, full-time position from a previously grant-funded position. The position provides highly skilled technical support for multiple areas including Witness Protection, Continuing Legal Education, and live online testimony. In addition, the position is responsible for creation of local, state, and national information presentations resulting in access to outside funding resources. Financial Impact: $74,

8 Accomplishments from 2013 Human Trafficking: Collaboration with the Innocence Lost Human Trafficking Taskforce acting as legal advisors and principal prosecutors of cases developed. Commitment to crime prevention education; Public service announcements, Courtrooms to Classrooms, and providing training to community groups about elder abuse (CASE) and about the dynamics of domestic violence. The Denver District Attorney s Office continues to assist other states with DNA familial searches in unsolved crimes to resolve, primarily, homicides and serial sexual assaults. This office is currently working with law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin, Utah and Australia
