Kings Langley Soccer Football Club The official Newsletter of the Kings Langley Flying Fillies and Colts Edition 1 - April 2014 Welcome to the 2014 season! On behalf of the 2014 committee we offer you a warm welcome to Kings Langley Soccer Football Club Inc., the Home of the Flying Fillies and Colts since 1969. We thank you for registering with Kings Langley Soccer Football Club; it is great to see so many new and returned players! We are confident that you will enjoy your experience with us and we look forward to sharing our 44th season with you. Unfortunately our season got off to a wet start with all round 1 games being postponed, some teams were lucky enough to get a game in for round 2 and as I sit here typing this newsletter am hoping that the rains keeps away for round 3. New to 2014 is the introduction of the Youth Comp for males U17 23 s, also a first for KLSFC is the inaugural Super League Squad and Over 30 s Ladies team. Like all clubs we rely heavily on the assistance of volunteers to successfully run the club, be they committee members, team officials, club referees or those who assist in the canteen, on the BBQ or setting up the fields. As a member of the club we would ask that you also assist, as and when you can. Your help will be greatly appreciated and in turn your support allows the club to run smoothly without placing the onus on those few volunteers that are there each week. We look forward to the 2014 season and wish you an enjoyable experience. If you have any questions please don t hesitate to ask your friendly committee. Warm Regards, KLSFC Committee

In the beginning. The History of the Kings Langley Soccer Football Club Inc., In 1967 a young 8- year- old boy by the name of Geoff Kay tried out for the Seven Hills Soccer Clubs Under 9 boys team. Geoff s father Jim Kay was surprised to hear that they wouldn t accept young Geoff, as they only wanted players with experience! Not to be deterred Jim approached the Principle of Lynwood Park Public School and asked for permission for his son Geoff and a friend to distribute some flyers, (Jim was a printer), around the school to see if there was enough interest to get a team together for his son. Jim was surprised at the response and soon had enough players to field five teams and Lynwood Park Sports Club was born. Jim approached Blacktown Council and was given permission to use Lynwood Park as the home ground. A group of parents formed the first committee and they set to work to transform Lynwood Park into some semblance of a football field. The area was covered in tree stumps and rocks which had to be dug out and removed by hand and drainage trenches were dug, also by hand, supervised by a local plumber whose son was in one of the teams. A competition was run to select an identity and Keith Davidson won with his selection of the Pegasus horse, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Mobil logo of the day? The mothers of the players rallied together to form a Women s auxiliary and handmade the first shirts in royal blue with a red and white stripe. The club was named Lynwood Sports Club as the original plans submitted to council called for tennis courts in Venn Avenue where the scout hall stands today and a hockey field across the creek where the U8 field exists today. They couldn t get anyone interested in hockey so the focus remained with soccer. The original canteen was built on the site where currently the water tank stands, from donated Besser blocks that had to be cleaned first. When work began on the foundation of the canteen the volunteers arrived the next morning to find someone had knocked the blocks down and they had to start all over again. Initially Lynwood Sports Club played in the Granville competition with the 1974 U21 team going on to win Champion of Champions. Jim Kay coached the team and was disappointed when the then committee failed to recognize this outstanding achievement and he decided, along with a group of others, to leave the club and started a new club in the area and called it Parklea Soccer Club. Lynwood Sports Club changed its name to Kings Langley Soccer Club around this time and the club played in the newly formed Blacktown Association. In 2009 Kings Langley Soccer Football Club were honoured to have Jim Kay, his son Geoff and daughter Susan accept our invitation and visit Lynwood Park for what we thought was our fortieth year celebration only to find we were already forty two! Jim is in his 80 s and lives down the south coast with his wife and is enjoying a hard earned retirement, Jim recalled the foundation years of the club and his stories of line marking by hand, ditch digging, stump removal and a variety of other tasks made us all realize the tremendous effort that went into establishing the club in the early years. The 2013 committee decided to honour Keith Davidson for his involvement in our clubs formative years by naming the Senior Female Player of the Year perpetual trophy the Keith Davidson Cup. Keith also enjoys retirement down the south coast and we are indebted to him for his involvement in giving the club it s identity all those years ago and for his foresight in selecting a logo that would survive the test of time and remain synonymous with our great club. Interestingly the two remnants of our humble beginnings are the royal blue and red and white striped uniforms and the Pegasus logo. And the rest is history. 2

Congratulations to Lisa Thorn! It was a fitting tribute recently when our president Lisa Thorn was awarded Blacktown City Sports Administrator of the year award for 2013. Lisa has been an active member of our club and committee for the last seven years. Six years ago Lisa advised the then committee of her vision for a special needs football program she named "Open Goals." Five years ago Lisa started recruiting players and with the help of her husband Steve as a coach and a few volunteers she began our Open Goals football program which today numbers forty players who each Saturday during the soccer season come to Lynwood Park and experience the joy of being involved in a team sport whilst in a positive nurturing environment. The success of the program is largely due to the commitment, dedication and vision of Lisa. Lisa not only coaches and co- ordinates the program, she actively serves on the committee whilst also a member of the board of the Blacktown District Soccer Football Association. Well- done Lisa! Match Reports 6

Team: Under 11 Whales Date: 05/04/14 Versus: Quakers Tigers Score: win 6-1 Player of the match: Jordan After round 1 was washed out the boys were more than keen to start their official 2014 season, after successful trial game things were looking pretty good. The boys were ready to fire and that they did. There was lots of solid defence from our backs and goalies with great attack and support from our mid- fielders and strikers. It was Jordan s very first soccer game and he is proving quite the natural receiving a very well deserved man of the match for his outstanding defence. I'd like to welcome our new players to the team (Diljot Big D, Jordan, Raphael) return players from last year (Ethan, Jade, Brandon, Maclan, Kyle, Luke, Matty & Jeremy) and previous years (Aaron and Kody it s great to have you back). I think it s gonna be a Whale of a year for these boys! Team: Over 30 Women Date: 11/04/14 Versus: Glenwood Player of the match: Fale Free mud baths! This was the inaugural match for the newly introduced Over 30 s team for KLSFC. For several of us it was the first time playing soccer. Our opponent was a very well oiled and experienced Glenwood side, although the scoreboard was a bit lop sided in favour of Glenwood the girls still showed plenty of grit putting up a good fight in a game played mostly in the pouring rain and mud. Fale received player of the match for her excellence defensive efforts in goalie and all round great play well done. Be proud Ladies! Newsletters and Match Day Reports We would love to hear how your team went whether you win or lose match reports are always fun for players, family and friends to read.
