By deplying a Veeam prxy agent in each Hyper-V parent partitin, efficient backups taking advantage f Nutanix data lcality can take place. 2 Intrductin 2.1 Audience This best practices dcument is part f the Nutanix slutins library and is intended fr use by individuals respnsible fr the architecture, design, management, and supprt f Veeam Backup & Replicatin n Nutanix systems. Cnsumers f this dcument shuld be familiar with cncepts pertaining t Micrsft Hyper-V, Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8, and Nutanix. 2.2 Purpse This dcument cvers the high level best practices fr Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8 and Nutanix using SMB 3.0 shares fr Hyper-V 2012 R2. This best practices guide is fcused n an ptimized disk-t-disk backup architecture. A Best Practice Checklist is included t help ensure yu implement all f the applicable best practices. 2.3 Synergistic Technlgies The web-scale Nutanix slutin and its data lcality technlgy are strngly cmplimented by the distributed and scale-ut architecture f Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8. The cmbined slutins leverage the strengths f bth prducts t prvide netwrk-efficient backups t meet recvery pint bjective (RPO) and recvery time bjective (RTO) requirements. The architecture is flexible enugh t enable the use f either 100% virtualized Veeam cmpnents r a cmbinatin f virtual and physical cmpnents, depending n custmer requirements and available hardware. 4

3 Architecture Perfrming backups in a Micrsft Hyper-V envirnment requires the interactin f several cmpnents, including the extensive usage f the Micrsft Vlume Shadw Cpy Service (VSS). The Nutanix slutin can leverage the Veeam scale-ut prxy architecture by placing a lightweight Veeam prxy agent n each Nutanix Hyper-V parent partitin. This reduces the netwrk lad and leverages the data lcality feature f Nutanix. All f the cmpnents invlved in the backup prcess are described in the fllwing sectins. 3.1 Cmpnent Overview Tables 1 and 2 describe the different cmpnents and virtualizatin/guest OS related technlgies fr the jint slutin. Table 1: Backup Cmpnents Cmpnent Nutanix Cntrller VM Veeam Backup Server Veeam Prxy Agent Veeam Repsitry Recmmendatin The CVM is what runs the Nutanix Distributed File Server and serves all f the I/O peratins fr the hypervisr and all VMs running n that hst. The CVM pls and exprts strage t the hypervisr as an SMB 3.0 file share. The Veeam Backup Server is the cre f the slutin, respnsible fr jb management and scheduling, indexing tasks, and general rchestratin f the backup and replicatin envirnment. The Backup Server can be virtualized t leverage the full capabilities f the Hyper-V and Nutanix systems. A backup prxy is a lightweight Veeam architecture cmpnent that sits between the data surce and target and is used t prcess jbs and deliver backup traffic. In particular, the backup prxy tasks include retrieving VM data frm the prductin strage, cmpressing, deduplicating, and sending it t the backup repsitry. The use f mre than ne n-hst backup prxy (executed directly in the parent partitin f each Hyper-V hst) lets yu easily scale yur backup infrastructure based n the size f yur Nutanix system. Fr large envirnments, multiple physical prxy servers may be required. These systems prvide the memry, string backup archives fr future restres, and imprtant meta-data used during backup and replicatin. A repsitry may be a Windws r Linux server, r a third-party NAS device. Repsitries can be either virtual r physical, depending n requirements and available hardware. If the repsitry is 5

virtual, it shuld nt be stred in the same Nutanix cluster as prductin data t prvide fault dmain islatin. Table 2: Backup Technlgies Micrsft VSS Technlgy Micrsft VSS Prvider Recmmendatin Micrsft Vlume Shadw cpy Service (VSS) is a built-in Micrsft framewrk fr applicatin-cnsistent backups. Built int Windws, VSS enables the creatin f a cnsistent snapsht f applicatin data, such as Micrsft Exchange, SQL, Active Directry, r the NTFS file system. Veeam and Nutanix can leverage VSS t ensure applicatincnsistent backups fr VSS-aware applicatins. Prviders manage data vlumes and create the shadw cpies f them n demand. There are three types f prviders: system, sftware, and hardware. All prviders must be able t d the fllwing: Intercept I/O requests between the file system and the underlying mass strage system. Capture and retrieve the status f a vlume at the time f shadw cpy, maintaining a "pint in time" view f the files n the disk with n partial I/O peratins reflected in its state. Use this "pint in time" view t expse a virtual vlume cntaining the shadw cpy data. Nutanix supplies a VSS prvider t enable applicatin-cnsistent snapshts. Micrsft VSS Requester Micrsft VSS Writer A requester is any applicatin that uses the VSS API t request the services f the Vlume Shadw Cpy Service t create and manage shadw cpies and shadw cpy sets f ne r mre vlumes. A backup applicatin, such as Veeam Backup & Recvery, is the primary requester type. Writers are applicatins r services that stre persistent infrmatin in files n disk and that prvide the names and lcatins f these files t requesters by using the shadw cpy interface. Examples f applicatins that have VSS writers are Micrsft Exchange and Active Directry. Yu can list VSS writers by using the vssadmin list writers cmmand. 6

3.2 Veeam Server Sizing Sizing Veeam Backup & Replicatin servers is dependent n the number f cncurrent jbs, ttal number f VMs, and the estimated size f the repsitry. The sizing guidelines in Table 3 belw are the minimum recmmended by Veeam at time f publicatin. The prxy servers can be deplyed int the Hyper-V parent partitin r n physical servers. Bth deplyment mdels are viable, and the chsen slutin is dependent n custmer requirements and available hardware. A general rule f thumb fr a physical prxy is 1 cre per 50 VMs. But this number is greatly dependent n the size f VMs and number f cncurrent backups. Prper testing fr yur envirnment is critical t ensure backup windws can be met. The Veeam Backup & Repsitry server may need t upsized fr envirnments with specific needs. Refer t Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8 dcumentatin fr additinal details n sizing. Table 3 Veeam Sizing Recmmendatins Veeam Technlgy Veeam Backup Prxy Recmmendatin Sizing shuld be tested in the custmer envirnment t verify the backup windw can be met. Hyper-V Parent Partitin: The lightweight agent runs in the parent partitin, s n specific resurce allcatin is required. Physical: 1 CPU cre fr every 50 VMs (recmmended minimum 4 cres) and 4GB RAM. Veeam Backup Server Veeam Repsitry 4GB f RAM plus 500MB f RAM fr each cncurrent jb. Disk space: 2GB fr prduct, plus 10GB per 100 VMs fr guest file system catalg, and at least 10GB fr VM recvery cache flder. Additinal sizing cnsideratins shuld be applied if the backend SQL server is deplyed n this server. See the Veeam dcumentatin fr additinal guidance. It can be c-lcated with the backup server rle fr small deplyments, r n a dedicated server (physical r virtual Windws/Linux server, NAS device, r dedicated backup appliance), and requires sufficient free space t stre all backup jb data. If virtualized n Nutanix, the repsitry shuld reside in a secndary Nutanix cluster fr fault dmain islatin. 3.2.1 Nutanix VSS Prvider Starting with Nutanix NOS 3.5.4, VSS integratin is available t custmers with Hyper-V deplyments. This is a majr advancement in Hyper-V supprt, which Veeam Backup & Replicatin can leverage. NOS 3.5.4 and later supprts VSS integratin and nly requires 7

administratrs jin the Nutanix platfrm t the Windws dmain using the ncli cluster jindmain cmmand. See the Nutanix NOS upgrade guide fr additinal details. Nutanix platfrms leverage the Server Message Blck (SMB) Prtcl 3.0 t prvide shared access t files between the Nutanix CVM and Hyper-V. Fr deplyments leveraging Micrsft VSS n Hyper-V fr applicatin cnsistency, the Nutanix platfrm supprts up t 50 VMs per Nutanix cntainer, but requires a gflag tuning parameter fr supprt. Please engage Nutanix Supprt t ptimize the gflag parameter fr VSS ptimizatin. There is n limit t the number f VMs per cntainer fr deplyments nt leveraging VSS. 3.3 Deplyment Mdel As shwn in the figure belw, Veeam supprts the repsitry server using a variety f targets, including a secndary Nutanix system, existing physical servers, NAS, r dedicated backup appliances. The fllwing tw sectins prvide guidance fr tw f the scenaris: 1) 100% virtualized slutin n Nutanix; and 2) leveraging an existing physical backup/prxy server. A hybrid scenari is als viable where there is a physical Veeam repsitry server (when tape vaulting is required, fr example), but virtualized prxy VMs are used. This can be a gd apprach if physical hardware is limited, as perfrmance can be easily determined. The defined backup windw may be a big factr in determining hw much, if any, f the Veeam infrastructure t virtualize. Prductin*Servers Nutanix(Secndary(Cluster Existing(Physical(Servers/NAS Nutanix(Prductin(Cluster Dedicated(Backup(Appliance Figure 1: Veeam Backup & Replicatin Repsitry Optins 3.3.1 Virtualized Veeam n Nutanix The fllwing figure shws the recmmended scale-ut mdel fr Veeam Backup & Replicatin. In each Hyper-V parent partitin, a lightweight Veeam Prxy agent is deplyed alng with the Nutanix VSS prvider, which will prcess all f the VMs currently running n that nde. All VM data is read frm the lcal strage, then cmpressed and deduplicated data is sent ver the netwrk t the Veeam repsitry. Only a single Veeam Backup & Replicatin VM is required fr this cnfiguratin, as the Veeam n-hst prxy agent is installed directly n the hypervisr parent partitin. 8

Figure 2: Example f Virtualized Veeam Deplyment Mdel n Nutanix (partial view f the cluster) If a 100% virtualized slutin n Nutanix is deplyed, placing the Veeam repsitry server in a secndary Nutanix system is recmmended fr disaster recvery. This prvides maximum prtectin frm a cmplete prductin system failure and allws scaling ut the backup repsitry independent f the prductin VMs. If yur rganizatin has multiple remte lcatins which need t replicate t a centralized lcatin, a Nutanix system as a replicatin target is als an ideal slutin. Starting with Nutanix OS 4.0, custmers can leverage the Nutanix Prism Central functinality t manage multiple Nutanix systems acrss different lcatins. Multiple Veeam prxies will perfrm cncurrent backups, thus enabling NDFS-style linear scale-ut backup perfrmance. The Nutanix mdel preserves perfrmance ver time by evenly distributing the backup wrklad acrss all ndes. When Prxy servers cmplete ne disk, the next lcal disk is then prcessed until all lcal VMs are fully backed up. 3.4 Physical Veeam Server As an alternative t deplying a virtualized Veeam repsitry, the figure belw shws a ntinal tplgy fr a physical Veeam cnfiguratin. In this example, all Veeam rles (backup, prxy, and repsitry) are c-lcated n a single physical server. Situatins requiring backup t tape will require a physical dedicated "tape server" rle. As per best practice, each Nutanix nde shuld have the Hyper-V management interface cnfigured t use the tw 10GbE NICs. This enables ptimal backup perfrmance, versus using the 1Gb NICs. The physical Veeam server shuld als have dual 10Gb NICs, and be cnnected t the same layer-2 netwrk as the Hyper-V management netwrk. The physical server shuld meet the minimum Veeam sizing requirements, based n the number f VMs yu are backing up and cncurrent jbs. In larger envirnments, multiple Veeam prxies may be required t meet backup windw r strage capacity requirements. 9

Nutanix(Prductin(Ndes Management%Netwrk 10Gb 10Gb 3.5 Veeam Restre Optins Figure 3: Physical Veeam Tplgy Veeam%Physical%Prxy/ Repsitry Veeam features fast recvery activities n Hyper-V, leveraging the access t the parent partitin f any Hyper-V hst. First, Veeam Backup & Replicatin reads the VM cnfiguratin frm the backup file in the repsitry and creates a dummy VM with the same settings and empty disks n the destinatin hst. Then, it initiates the creatin f a prtective snapsht fr the dummy VM and the VM is started. If the Instant VM Recvery prcess fails fr sme reasn, the prtective snapsht guarantees that n data is lst. On the backup repsitry and n the destinatin hst, Veeam Backup & Replicatin deplys a pair f Veeam transprt services that are used t munt the VM disks frm the backup file t the dummy VM. Finally, n the destinatin hst, Veeam Backup & Replicatin starts a prprietary Veeam driver. The driver redirects requests t the file system f the recvered VM (fr example, when a user accesses sme applicatin) and reads necessary data frm the backup file n the backup repsitry via the pair f Veeam transprt services which maintain the disk munt. This prcess is fully supprted n the Nutanix platfrm. Figure 4: Veeam Restre Prcess 10

This technlgy is used t perfrm the fllwing tasks: Recvery Verificatin (SureBackup, SureReplica) Instant VM Recvery Universal Applicatin-Item Recvery (U-AIR) Nutanix and Veeam Backup & Replicatin enables yu t perfrm bth image-level and filelevel restres f backups and replicas. Yu can restre a virtual machine as a whle t start it n the target Hyper-V server, recver nly VM hard disks, VM files, r VM guest OS files and flders, and save them n yur lcal machine. VMs r files can be restred at any f the available restre pints. All restres are perfrmed via the netwrk, and n special prcedures are required t restre yur data n the Nutanix platfrm. 11

4 Cnfiguratin Details This sectin prvides specific instructins n hw t cnfigure Veeam Backup & Replicatin t fllw best practices fr a deplyment n the Nutanix Virtual Cmputing Platfrm. A basic familiarity with Veeam and Hyper-V is assumed. When deplying the Veeam servers, use the latest apprved Windws perating system fr yur envirnment. Nutanix and Veeam recmmend using Windws Server 2012 R2, but this is nt required. 4.1 Veeam Cnfiguratin Optimizatin 1. Install Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8 patch 1 (r later) n the backup server, versin 8.0.0.971. (See Veeam KB1982 fr mre details.) 4.2 Veeam Backup Prxy Cnfiguratin 1. If yu want t use On-Hst prxies, there is n dedicated installatin fr this prxy type. Each Hyper-V hst yu add and cnfigure t Veeam Backup & Replicatin autmatically becmes als a Veeam On-Hst prxy. 2. If yu want t use a physical prxy, launch Veeam Backup & Recvery and navigate t the Backup Infrastructure windw. Right click n Backup Prxies and select Add Hyper-V Offhst Backup Prxy. Figure 5 Offhst Backup Prxy 3. Click n Add New and enter the DNS name f the physical prxy. If nt already cnfigured, add a Managed Accunt that has lcal administratr rights n the physical prxy. 4. If a firewall is running n the prxy, verify that 137/UDP, 138/UDP and 139/TCP are pen. If yu are using the Windws firewall, enable the fllwing three rules shwn in green: 12

Accept the defaults fr the remainder f the wizard and wait fr the prxy t install. 4.3 Veeam Backup Methds Veeam and Nutanix recmmend using the new frever frward incremental backup methd. This is the new default methd fr newly created jbs in Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8, and can be selected als fr existing jbs if upgrading frm previus versins. In this scenari, a full backup is perfrmed n day ne, then incremental backups are perfrmed fr all subsequent days. The day-ne backup may have lwer thrughput, due t reading all f the VM data that may be in the strage tier, versus the perfrmance SSD r RAM tiers. 13

Figure 8 Frever Frward Incremental Backup This backup methd ffers the ability t execute frever incremental backups n the prductin strage, thus minimizing the lad n the Nutanix cluster. At the same time, it ffers the best space utilizatin n the backup repsitry, since nly ne full backup file is stred at any time. When reaching the desired retentin perid, the ldest incremental file is injected int the full backup file. This additinal disk activity is created int the backup repsitry itself, while any vsphere snapsht has already been remved. In this way, n additinal lad is created n the prductin Nutanix cluster. Refers t Veeam dcumentatin fr further design cnsideratins. 4.4 Veeam Jb Cnfiguratin During the backup jb cnfiguratin, ensure that the default f using n-hst backup prxy is selected. Refer t the Veeam dcumentatin fr mre detailed firewall requirements. Figure 11 Enabling Applicatin-Cnsistent Snapshts When cnfiguring yur backup jbs, exclude the Nutanix CVMs and the Veeam Backup and Replicatin server (when virtualized) frm the schedule. These VMs d nt need t be backed up; yu nly need t save the Veeam Backup Cnfiguratin using a specific cnfiguratin ptin inside Veeam Backup Server, which is enabled by default. Cnfigure yur jbs t back up multiple VMs depending n yur envirnment and infrastructure, s that parallel prcessing can be enabled fr faster backups. Als, Veeam native deduplicatin can be higher with an increased number f VMs inside the same jb. There is n need t manually cnfigure which prxy is used fr VM backup peratins, Veeam Backup Server will autmatically distribute the VMs t be prcessed t all available prxies. Once all f the jbs are cnfigured, mnitr the jbs t ensure that each prxy is nly backing up the VMs n its hst. This can be easily validated by pening the Veeam jb cnsle, lcating the VM name, and reviewing the jb lg in the GUI. Lk fr the text Using backup prxy. 4.5 Nutanix Cnfiguratin Upgrading the cluster(s) t 3.5.4 (r later) is required t enable VSS functinality. Yu must als jin the Nutanix system t the Windws dmain fr the VSS integratin. See the Nutanix upgrade dcumentatin fr details. Fr deplyments leveraging Micrsft VSS n Hyper-V fr applicatin cnsistency, the Nutanix platfrm supprts up t 50 VMs per Nutanix cntainer but requires a gflag tuning parameter fr supprt. Please engage Nutanix Supprt t ptimize the gflag parameter fr VSS ptimizatin. There is n limit t the number f VMs per cntainer fr deplyments nt leveraging VSS. 16

5 Best Practice Checklist The Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8 n Nutanix best practices can be summarized int the fllwing items: General When deplying the Veeam Backup & Replicatin server, use the latest apprved Windws perating system fr yur envirnment. Yu must use Hyper-V n Windws Server 2012 R2 t leverage the Nutanix VSS prvider. Windws Server 2008/2008 R2/2012 Hyper-V hsts d nt supprt the required SMB 3.0 VSS features. The server(s) hsting the Veeam repsitry can be running lder perating systems such as Windws Server 2012, r 2008 R2. Yu shuld verify cmpatibility with the Veeam dcumentatin. In any case, Veeam suggests a 64 bit Windws perating system. Start with a Prf f Cncept, test, ptimize, iterate, and scale. Validate guest VM firewall rules if yu want Veeam t leverage in-guest VSS capabilities. Veeam Cmpnents Use Veeam Backup & Replicatin v8 patch 1 (build 8.0.0.971) r later. Use frever frward incremental backups. Avid active full backups. Deply the lightweight Veeam Prxy agent int each Hyper-V parent partitin. D nt backup the Nutanix CVMs r any Hyper-V parent partitins. Verify the default f n-hst backup is selected fr all backup jbs. Cnfigure the Veeam jbs t back up mre than ne VM t enable parallel prcessing and enhanced deduplicatin ratis. Verify backup jbs are using the n-hst prxy backup methd. T verify this, review the backup jb histry, select a VM in the left pane, and in the middle Actin pane lk fr using surce prxy and verify n-hst is used. Cnfigure the jbs t enable applicatin-aware image prcessing if yu want VSSenabled backups. Un-check the changed blck tracking ptin fr all jbs using Nutanix SMB shares. 17
