1 ALM in the Clud an Overview f Oracle Develper Clud Service Intrductin By Dana Singleterry In recent years the wrld f applicatin develpment has adpted new methdlgies that aim t imprve the quality and speed in which applicatins are being delivered. The intrductin f innvative develpment appraches such as test driven develpment and agile develpment gave rise t a set f new techniques and tls that enable thse methdlgies. Tls such as autmatic build utilities cmbined with cntinuus integratin platfrms, as well as enhanced cllabrative tls such as wikis and cde review utilities aim t simplify the adptin f these new methdlgies. Hwever fr many IT shps setting up these envirnments and maintaining them was difficult and cst prhibiting, resulting in many rganizatins sticking t the ld way f building applicatins. Nw Oracle is aiming t change this by intrducing a new simpler way t adpt mdern develpment methdlgy and tls with a clud based ffering. Oracle Develper Clud Service (ODCS) will transfrm the way yur applicatins, whether Web / Mbile / Clud- based / On- premise / r a cmbinatin, are built and deplyed. The new ODCS Platfrm as a Service (PaaS) is fcused n simplifying and accelerating the entire Java applicatin lifecycle (including Oracle s Applicatin Develpment Framewrk ADF), making it easier and faster than ever t build, run and manage yur applicatins. Develpment pains becme an issue f the past thanks t the autmatically prvisined, scalable develpment platfrm supprting the cmplete develpment lifecycle as prvided by ODCS. Within minutes, teams get immediate access t surce repsitries, issue tracking, builds, and mre. ODCS prmtes team develpment by enabling the develper t create, cllabrate n, and deply applicatins in a standards- based envirnment. During the develpment lifecycle, it s ften tugh t manage standalne cmpnents in a seamless way. Fr instance, yu need access t IDEs and cde repsitries, and capabilities fr Wikis. When yu d this individually, yu have t manually set up everything and manage them n an nging basis. ODCS is a central platfrm fr surce cntrl management, issue tracking, cntinuus integratin, and cllabratin all dne autmatically supprting ppular tls like Git, Hudsn, and Maven. In this article, the features prvided by ODCS will be clearly utlined prviding a transparent understanding f Oracle s PaaS slutin fr team develpment. First, let s get an understanding n the impact f PaaS n ttal cst f wnership (TCO). PaaS impact n TCO PaaS is seeing significant grwth as businesses are increasingly turning t these hsted services fr develpment, deplyment, and management f applicatins. One can easily surmise that this is sn t be a key asset fr develpers and lines- f- business in the mdern technlgy tlset by eliminating much f the peratinal csts and IT hassles nrmally encuntered such as infrastructure 1

2 installatin/cnfiguratin, develpment lifecycle sftware installatin/cnfiguratin and, nging management f these envirnments. PaaS develper services benefits the business in a variety f ways that impact the cst f applicatins develpment, test, maintenance, and peratins. Let s summarize this in its cnstituent pieces: Agility and time- t- market: Pssibly the mst bvius reasns that PaaS is being pursued by develpers and lines- f- business but it is still difficult t quantify. T be brief, with PaaS, this remves the expense f infrastructure, sftware, and nging maintenance. Operatinal simplificatin: PaaS alleviates develpment teams frm certain peratins such as installatin and upgrades. Many tl assisted/scripted peratins are replaced by PaaS develper services. ODCS takes n the peratinal burdens by making sure the develpment lifecycle sftware and prcesses yu rely n are up- t- date, secure and perfrming as designed. Expertise: PaaS is a peratinally cmplex infrastructure with equally cmplex prcesses with assciatins between them. Finding technically skilled expertise t install/cnfigure/manage such an envirnment is expensive and thus remving this layer frm develpment teams and allwing them t fcus n the applicatin at hand is a clear win fr the business tday, tmrrw and in the future. Building n standards prvides clear benefits, ne f the mst immediate being that yu can run yur applicatins in Oracle Clud mre transparently. This means yu can prt an applicatin t yur lcal envirnment withut having t alter any cde. Cnversely, if yu re running a standards- based applicatin n- premise and wuld like t mve it t the clud, yu will be much further alng in the prcess t make that change. The design principles fr Oracle Clud are t allw self- service. Yu can develp, deply and manage yur applicatins with minimal invlvement f yur IT staff. This als means a minimal need t engage with Oracle as yu chse. Anther unique and a distinct advantage fr Oracle Clud users is the cmplete islatin f data. There is n cmingling f yur data, despite it being a public clud as Oracle Clud is a multi- tenant envirnment. Hw des it all wrk? ODCS prvides functinality fr creating and cnfiguring prjects, adding and remving team members, and using the Dashbard t view prject metrics and build status. As an administratr, yu can perfrm the fllwing actins frm ODCS web interface: Create a prject Add and remve members, and assign administrative privileges t a member Access t Admin mdule Manage tasks Add and remve prducts Assign a team member t wn a prduct Manage tags Add custm fields Manage Hudsn plugins 3

4 Change the privacy f a prject Add hsted surce repsitry and external surce repsitry When yu create a prject in ODCS yu becme the administratr (r Owner) f the prject and can perfrm all the afrementined actins. Prject creatin immediately prvisins the Surce Cntrl Management (SCM) and Maven repsitries, Tasks mdule, Hudsn build server, and a wiki. Once a prject has been created, the prject tlbar reveals the fllwing tls that are available fr each f the feature mdules: Figure 2 ODCS Prject Tlbar The fllwing is a review f sme f these mdules. Using the Dashbard The Dashbard mdule prvides fur sets f infrmatin: Build status frm Hudsn, cmmit statistics f the user, an Activity graph, and a recent activity feed. Clicking a link in either the recent activity feed, r the build status, pens the details fr that item and if a build is brken fr example, assciatins make it easy t track back t what brke the build. Yu can als easily filter infrmatin n the dashbard page fr the Recent Activity feed items by Build, Wiki, and Tasks. In additin, when yu hver ver a task activity, a ppup windw prvides yu with the details f the task. Managing Users Yu can add and remve users frm the Team mdule f the Oracle Develper Clud Service. The Team mdule displays the current users f the prject and in rder t add users t a prject, the user must already exist in the Identity Dmain. As an administratr yu can easily update users and their rles. Administering Tasks: Tasks cme with a default set f categries that can be cnfigured t yur specific needs. There is the Admin tab in the prject tlbar, which lads the mdule and prvides the varius subsectins ne f which is Tasks. In the Tasks subsectin, yu can define multiple prduct categries, cmpnents, sub- cmpnents, custmize the versins, prvide custm tasks, and add custm fields. Creating a Prduct: Yu can create multiple prducts fr a prject and prduct details are required when tasks are created. Once yu ve created a prduct, yu can then add cmpnents (multiple cmpnents) t the prduct. This requires specifying the cmpnent name, descriptin, and wner in the cmpnents sectin. Yu als want t add a release (multiple releases) f the prduct, which simply means specifying the release numbers in the releases sectin. Creating Iteratins, Tags, and Custm Fields: Yu can add multiple iteratins, tags, and custm fields fr a prject. This detail is required when tasks are created. Managing Wiki: ODCS prvides a Wiki mdule fr dcument authring and cllabratin. The wiki is created when yu create a prject and there are tw types f wiki markup supprted: 4

5 Textile Cnfluence Any member f a prject can create a wiki page, but as an administratr yu can specify, and change the wiki markup type fr a prject. Managing Hudsn Builds: ODCS includes cntinuus integratin services thrugh Hudsn, the mst ppular cntinuus integratin server, which supprts agile develpment methdlgies. Specifically, fr ODCS, custmers need t understand the traceability that they get between tasks, cmmits t Git, and builds. This is an enhancement that is built int ODCS that allws the build results t reveal specific change lists and tasks assciated with a change list. When a build breaks, it s much easier t trace the brken build back t a specific task r bug fix. Each instance als includes a Hudsn cntinuus build server t build yur applicatin surce files. Hudsn builds are easily managed frm the Builds mdule f ODCS. Tw sample jbs are included with yur Hudsn instance: A sample Maven jb which plls frm the Git repsitry in regular intervals. An Ant jb which includes a sample cnfiguratin fr building ADF Applicatins with OJDeply. Yu can cpy and mdify these example jbs r create yur wn. Yu can review histry n a file t see what s changed, add cmments t mdificatins and apprve r reject said mdificatins and the verall cde review itself.
