APPEL Program: Praxis Exams and Cut Scores for 2014 CORE Exams Required for Entry into APPEL Program All APPEL applicants are required to take and pass all three of the CORE (5712, 5722, 5732) exams. The only exceptions are those who meet the qualifications to substitute another score in place of these exams (see below for details). If an applicant has taken the Praxis I: PPST prior to October 1, 2013 please see the NOTE below. Computer-based testing (CBT) registration is made by appointment at over 300 Prometric test sites throughout the United States. To schedule an appointment: Go online to http://www.ets.org/praxis/ar?wt.ac=praxishome_states_121126 and register for a computer delivered exam. NOTE: *On September 1, 2013, the Praxis I: PPST exams changed to the CORE exams listed above. If a candidate passed all three or any one of the previously required PPST (Reading 0710, Writing 0720 or Math 0730) BEFORE September 1, 2013 those scores will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. Candidates that passed only one or two parts of PPST prior to September 1, 2013 MUST take the new CORE exam for the exam(s) not passed prior to the test change. Alternatives to CORE Exams-Required upon Entry into APPEL Program The following exams may be substituted for CORE if all conditions are met. The substitute exam is acceptable only if the candidate holds a Master s Degree (or higher) and meets the listed Arkansas cut score(s) upon making application to the program. Documentation must be available in the form of an official score report, an official college/university transcript, or by submitting an official letter from the college/university graduate office verifying the scores. The following exams are also accepted in lieu of the CORE exams but only if the candidate holds a Master s degree (or higher) upon making application to the program. Documentation must be available in the form of an official score report, an official college/university transcript, or by submitting an official letter from the college/university graduate office verifying the score. Some (very few) are still offered paper-based only. Computer-based testing (CBT) registration is made by appointment at over 300 Prometric test sites throughout the United States. Applicants must pass the Praxis II content specific license area exam(s) for the particular grade level and/or subject area the candidate plans to teach prior to making application to the program. PAY ATTENTION sometimes there s more than one content specific area exam for the particular subject area. Applicants MUST take ALL content exams required as listed. Applicants are NOT required to take a Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam to enter APPEL. This PLT is the EXIT exam for the program. Applicants must test in a timely manner in order to receive a passing score report back before the May deadline for APPEL applications.

Middle Childhood: Grades 4 through 8 Math, Science, English and Social Studies NOTE: In September 2013, the exams required for Middle Childhood licensure changed. If a candidate has NOT already passed one of the two previous exams as noted below, then these new exams are required. There will be four separate exams, one for each individual content area. At least two of these exams must be taken and passed in order for a license to be issued. A candidate is eligible to license to teach in all areas for which the individual test has been passed. It is also required that Middle Childhood applicants complete 6 credit hours of Teaching Reading and 3 credit hours of Arkansas History. *On September 1, 2013, the Middle Childhood exams changed to four individual exams (see above). If a candidate started taking the previously required 5141 and passed any ONE of the 5141 subtests PRIOR to September 1, 2013, then they may continue to take the not passed parts of the 5141 or they have the option to take and pass the new, individual test(s) listed above. At least two subtests of 5141 must be passed for acceptance to APPEL in 2014.. On January 1, 2012, the Middle Childhood test was changed to 5141. If a candidate took and passed the previously required Praxis II 146 or 5146 exam (144 or better) BEFORE January 1, 2012, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. A candidate would be eligible to teach in all four, middle level core subject areas.

Secondary Subjects Grades 7-12 Math, English, Social Studies, Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, Marketing Technology, Family and Consumer Science, Industrial Technology, Speech, Drama On September 1, 2011, the English test was changed to 044. If a candidate passed tests 041 AND 042 BEFORE September 1, 2011, these scores will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. On September 1, 2011, the Social Studies test was changed to 086. If a candidate passed tests 081 and 082 BEFORE September 1, 2011, these scores will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. On September 1, 2011, the Industrial Technology test was changed to 051. If a candidate passed test 050 BEFORE September 1, 2011, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. On January 1, 2013, the Drama test was changed to 641. If a candidate passed test 640 BEFORE January 1, 2013, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. To be licensed in two license content areas, a Secondary participant must have successfully completed all content specific licensure assessments for both areas, and have a teaching assignment in both licensure areas. (A participant wishing to add social studies must also complete the required three college credit-hours of Arkansas History, in advance of licensure.) If a candidate passed test 092 BEFORE September 1, 2011, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program.

On September 1, 2011, the Art test was changed to 135. If a candidate passed tests 131, 132 AND 133 BEFORE September 1, 2011, these scores will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. On September 1, 2012, the Music test was changed to 114. If a candidate passed tests 111, 112 AND 113 BEFORE September 1, 2012, these scores will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. On January 1, 2013, the Latin test will change to 0161. If a candidate passed test 0600 BEFORE January 1, 2013, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. On January 1, 2013, the Drama test was changed to 641. If a candidate passed test 640 BEFORE January 1, 2013, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program ENDORSEMENT AREAS: All appropriate tests and requirements must be successfully completed PRIOR TO an endorsement area being added to the license. Coaching Endorsement - may be added as the second area of licensure to any license area upon employment in a coaching position and submission of the following documentation: Official transcript showing completion of a college/university program of study in coaching Official score report showing a passing score on the required Praxis II exam (see below) Application for a teaching license, signed by the college/university Licensure Officer, verifying the Coaching program of study and recommending the endorsement is to be added to the license On September 1, 2011, the Physical Education test was changed from 092 to 095. If a candidate passed test 092 BEFORE September 1, 2011, this score will be accepted for entry into the 2014 APPEL Program. OR A COACHING CERTIFICATION RECOGNIZED BY THE ARKANSAS ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (AAA) MAY BE EARNED BY COMPLETING AAA COACHES EDUCATION PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS. This certification does NOT add a coaching endorsement to the teaching license but does allow a full time licensed teacher in a member school to serve as a paid coach in that district. English as a Second Language (ESL) 4-8 Endorsement - may be added as the second area of licensure to a Middle Childhood (4-8) license upon submitting proof of a teaching assignment in ESL 4-8 and submission of the following documentation: Official transcript showing completion of a college/university program of study in ESL or the ESL Academy for college credit Official score report showing a passing score on the required Praxis II exam Application for a teaching license, signed by the college/university Licensure Officer, verifying the program of study and recommending the endorsement is to be added to the license English as a Second Language (ESL) 7-12 Endorsement may be added as the second area of licensure to any license area upon submitting proof of a teaching assignment in ESL 7-12 and submission of the following documentation: Official transcript showing completion of a college/university program of study in ESL or the ESL Academy for college credit Official score report showing a passing score on the required Praxis II exam Application for a teaching license, signed by the college/university Licensure Officer, verifying the program of study and recommending the endorsement is to be added to the license APPEL teachers must teach in a traditional classroom setting. An ESL endorsement is granted to allow the teacher to work with ELL students in the regular classroom environment. (This excludes the APPEL teacher from being assigned to a transitional or any other non-regular classroom setting.)
