1 Educator Licensure Testing Requirements (as of July 1, 2015) for cidates seeking initial licensure in a subject area. Initial Licensure tests qualifying scores listed in the following charts are subject to change by the These charts are not for currently licensed teachers retesting in content areas they instruct. Introduction The implementation of educator testing in Ohio is in response to stards adopted by the State Board of Education (see Ohio Administrative Code). The State Board of Education has adopted examinations for licensure that are provided by (1) Evaluation Systems group of Pearson (Pearson), (2) Educational Testing Service (ETS) (3) the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Successful completion of required tests is designed to ensure that cidates for licensure have acquired the minimal knowledge necessary for entry-level positions. Licensure tests provided by ACTFL/LTI are required of all modern world language cidates. These assessments ensure the spoken written language proficiency of cidates for licensure to teach modern world languages. The ODE requires only ONE test be successfully completed in an educator s career. However, new content or licensure areas require additional Pearson, ACTFL or Praxis II subject tests to establish minimum competency in that subject area. Any applicant interested in specific test requirements of an educator preparation program MUST contact the school, college, or department of education of an approved institution. Any person holding licensure in another state interested in obtaining Ohio licensure should contact the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), Center for the Teaching Profession, Office of Educator Licensure, 25 S. Front Street, MS 105, Columbus, Ohio , (614) or (Toll free) educator.licensure@education.ohio.gov What tests are required? Ohio s for Educators (OAE) provided by Evaluation Systems group of Pearson. These assessments include Professional s content tests. 1

2 Where specified, Praxis II subject assessments provided by Educational Testing Service are required. Tests in World Languages which are provided by ACTFL include two components: the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT). Refer to the chart for required languages assessments. What are the registration procedures? Evaluation Systems group of Pearson: Online registration for these computer-delivered tests is available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The option is available to register up to 24 hours before testing. Access the following website for information. Educational Testing Service: Praxis II content tests are required as indicated. These tests are provided in paper-delivered format. Computer-delivered tests are available where specified. Registration for paper-delivered Praxis II tests is available at Registration for computer-delivered tests is available at: Registration for ACTFL tests is available on the ACTFL website, Registrants have a choice of applying online or downloading the application submitting it via fax or ground mail. When where are the tests administered? All Pearson assessments are computer-delivered offered continuously on dem. In Ohio, testing is available at Pearson Professional Centers or Educator preparation program sites. Outof-state centers are also available. Follow the registration directions indicated at the website. ETS Praxis II computer-delivered tests are given year-round by appointment at designated sites. Follow the registration directions indicated at the website: ACTFL language tests are administered at a date agreed upon between the examinee ACTFL. The specifics are available on the ACTFL website: Where should test results be reported for out-of-state applicants? Evaluation Systems group of Pearson o Out-of-state applicants are responsible for accessing their account clicking on the link Request a Copy of Your Test Results. The individual uses this link to request an additional 2

3 score report which then accompanies his/her application for licensure. There is a fee associated with this request. ACTFL o Individuals who have previously completed the ACTFL OPI /or WPT in another state, or in Ohio prior to February 2009 would like that rating to apply to their licensure application, will need to arrange for test results to be electronically reported to the Ohio Department of Education. In order to do this, processing@languagetesting.com ask for a Request for an Official Certificate form, which can then be sent via , fax or mail. An additional fee is required to obtain a certified copy. Amount of the fee is available on the ACTFL website. Payment should be included when the form is submitted. ETS o Out-of-state applicants are responsible for authorizing ETS to release the test results to the Ohio Department of Education (recipient number 7945). (Search Keyword: Educator Licensure) What is the procedure for in-state applicants? In-state applicants are responsible for authorizing testing companies to release test results to the college or university where the applicant is enrolled. May a cidate retake failed tests? Yes, a cidate for licensure may retake any or all required tests. Access the Pearson, ETS ACTFL websites for details regarding the retest policies of each test provider. How may a cidate qualify for accommodations? All determinations for extra or special needs are determined by the test providers. For Pearson test accommodations see the Pearson website: For ACTFL test accommodations policy see the ACTFL website: For Praxis test accommodations see the ETS website: 3
