Introduction This is a guide to adjusting the settings on Windows XP with Service pack 2 so that TOPAZ will be able to function correctly. Follow these instructions and your software should not have any further issues with Windows XP sp2 There is also information describing how to contact technical support if you have questions. To use this document effectively, you should meet the following minimum qualifications: a basic knowledge of installing software on a Windows XP computer a basic knowledge of Internet Explorer 6. Read these instructions entirely before making the adjustments. Overview Many users prefer to operate TOPAZ on a computer which is using the Window XP operating system. The software is designed to accommodate this preference. When Microsoft introduced Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, they introduced several improvements to the security of the operating system. Unfortunately, these improvements interfere with the functions of TOPAZ. A few simple modifications in Windows XP will solve this problem. This document will provide you with the information needed to make these modifications. Recommended Steps to follow 1. If this is a new installation of TOPAZ, install Microsoft Virtual Machine. See page 4. 2. Adjust the settings on the Windows XP Firewall. See page 6. 3. Load software onto the computer following the instructions in the TOPAZ Software User Guide. NOTE: If you have already loaded TOPAZ and are following these steps to solve the issue with Windows XP sp2, you do NOT need to uninstall TOPAZ or install the Virtual Machine. Make the adjustments to the firewall and the issue should be solved. January 15, 2005 3
TOPAZ Using Windows XP with service pack 2 Installing Virtual Machine The installer for virtual machine is located on the TOPAZ software CD. 1. Insert the CD and when the Install window opens, select Browse CD. 2. When the folders window displays, click on the folder named IE6 to open it. 3. Locate the msjavx86.exe file and double click on the file name. The following install window will display. 4. Click Yes. You do want to install the Virtual Machine. 5. Read the agreement and click Yes to begin the installation of the files. A progress bar will show the process of the installation. 4 Revision A

TOPAZ Using Windows XP with service pack 2 Setting XP sp2 Firewall 1. To open the Control Panel click Start>Settings>Control Panel 2. Double click on the Windows Firewall icon. Click this icon to open the Firewall controls 3. When Windows Firewall opens, click the Exceptions tab. 6 Revision A
Installing Virtual Machine 4. Click on Add Program to add two components of TOPAZ to the list of programs that may pass through the Firewall. 5. Using the Browse button, locate mp.exe. It will be located in the folder where TOPAZ was installed. The default location is C:\Program Files\\Topaz folder as shown below. 6. Highlight mp.exe in the list and click Open to add it to the Add a Program window. Highlight mp.exe in the Add a Program window and click OK. January 15, 2005 7
TOPAZ Using Windows XP with service pack 2 7. Repeat steps 4. through 6. but this time add mpuprun.exe. 8. The program will now appear in the Programs and Services section of the Exceptions tab. Make certain that the check box beside it contains a checkmark. Click OK to close the Firewall properties. You can now load TOPAZ following the instructions in the TOPAZ Software User Manual. 8 Revision A
