1 How to Restore a Backup to Director V4.7x or greater Restoring a Backup of the Director Database V4.7x or greater and then restoring it to a new PC See How to Backup Director V4.4x or greater.doc for details on how to create a Backup. 1. Install Director Version 4.7x on the new computer making sure that the computer requirements are met or exceeded as outlined in the chart below. If you are restoring newer versions of Director see the Director Help Index under Computer Requirements. Computer Requirements for Installation of Director V4.72 PC and RAM (P4 Class) Windows Version Director XP Pro / 2003 Server (Std.) Windows Vista ** Installation with the latest service pack. Director Client only 2 GHz 2 GHz 1 GB Single PC System 2 GHz 2 GB 2 GHz Busy Director Server Hard Drive Video / Monitor Peripherals 1.5 GB 3 GHz 2 GB 160 GB 1024 x 768 or higher DVD / CD ROM drive USB port 3 GB 3 GHz 4 GB ** Microsoft Vista: The 'Home' and 'Server' versions of Microsoft Vista are NOT supported. (You can also refer to the Director CD and packaging--which may provide additional details.) Tip: You may need your Windows CD when setting up a panel connection. Director Server PC: For optimal performance, we recommend running the Director (server) software on a dedicated PC. Windows XP Home: VEREX Director is NOT intended for use under the "Home" version of Windows XP. Windows NT, Millennium (ME), and Windows 2000 and older: NOT supported. Service Packs: It is always best to stay current on the 'service packs' available for your version of MS Windows, and install them as new ones are released. MS SQL Server Applications: Beginning with V4.7, the VEREX Director software uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, and requires dedicated access to this component. You may not be able to run other software applications (on the same PC) that also use this component. Exception: If you select SQL Server support during the installation, the database will be managed through an MS SQL Server (2000 or 2005) PC, and you will be prompted to provide passwords that allow the Director software to connect with its database. 2 2. Copy the Customer Name Director Backups folder from the CD/DVD/USB Key onto the C:\ of the new PC with Director V4.72 installed. On the new computer make sure the Director USB HASP Key is plugged in but exit out of Director and stop all Director Services. To stop the Director Services click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scroll to near the bottom of the list, rightclick on VEREX Director Communications and select Stop. Right-click on VEREX Director Server and select Stop. 3. Click Start > All Programs > VEREX Director V4 > VEREX Director-Repair. On the following screen click the Backup/Restore Tab and then click File and browse to the C:\Customer Name Director Backups folder and double-click on your Backup file i.e. Backup_ _ bak Then click Restore Database as seen below. This restore process may take several minutes. 4. If you restored a V4.7x or greater database, you can Start the Director Services (see Step 8. below) and login to Director you are done. If you are restoring an older version of Director, see next step. Page 2 of 6

3 5. Click Start > My Computer. Double-click: C:\Program Files\VEREX\Verex Director V4. 6. If you are restoring a database that is V4.4x or 4.5x, double-click the icon named VEREX Director DB Convert46.exe. Click on Convert Database. This process will take several minutes. This process will convert the database to Version If you are converting from a 4.6x database or later, skip to Step 7 below. 7. If you are restoring a database that is 4.6x or greater or have just converted the database to 4.6 in last step, double-click the icon named VEREX Director DB Convert.exe. Click on Convert Database. This process will take several minutes. This process will convert the database to the Latest. 8. Start the Director Services. To Start the Director Services click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scroll to near the bottom of the list, right-click on VEREX Director Communications and select Start. Right-click on VEREX Director Server and select Start. 9. Login to Director V4.7x using the same user Name and Password that were used when the backup was created. Page 3 of 6

Return to Step 1 and create a new backup of your 4.7x Database to the C:\Customer Name Director Backups folder and burn that backup folder onto 2 CDs or 2 DVDs and save in two separate locations (i.e. one CD with a backup of the database at the customer s site, and a second CD stored at the service company s site properly named and dated.) How often a backup is required depends on how much data you are willing to risk losing. To backup to a network folder please see Technical Bulletin: ISM-066_Network_Backups_For_4.7x_and_up.pdf for details. 11. You can select the Number Of Backups to Keep: as seen below. The default is 7. The minimum is 1. The maximum is 52. If you select 7 for example, the 8 th backup will result in the deletion of the 1 st backup (oldest in that folder). The Director backup program looks at the filename time and date that is part or the default naming convention prefix (i.e. Backup_ _ ) and deletes the oldest one. If the Director backup program cannot determine the date because the name has been changed, the backup file will not be deleted. To avoid loss of data when trying to restore the database and/or making backups do not modify the filename in any way other than what is suggested in How to Backup Director V4.4x or greater.pdf. 5 12. About enabling automatic backups of the Director Database. THE PC THAT IS HOSTING THE DIRECTOR SOFTWARE MUST BE POWERED ON WITH THE DIRECTOR SERVICE RUNNING IN ORDER FOR THE BACKUP TO WORK. Everything including the Events gets backed up since the last time Director communicated with the Main Panel(s). In the Communications area of Director, If you choose to Stay Connected and the Director server is communicating with the panel when the backup occurs, you will have the most up to date Events and Director will maintain that communications after the backup has completed. To enable automatic backups: Click the box beside Enable Automatic Backup to add a checkmark. Enter the Frequency [days]: between 1 and 999. Enter 0 to run a one time backup at a time later that same day. 7 is the default. Enter a Start time: and set the Next Start Date: to todays date. Click Save. As seen below. Page 5 of 6

6 Note that the first time you enable automated backups, if you set the Next Start Date to today s date, after you click Save as seen above, the Next Start Date: will jump forward the number of days you selected beside Frequency [days]:. As seen below: If you have set everything correctly, you should see a backup file in the backup folder you specified. 13. You are done. Page 6 of 6
