FOREWORD This International Symposium is dedicated to commemorate the Fiftieth Death Anniversary of Prof. Jan Czochralski. It is being organized by the Polish Society for Crystal Growth, the Institute of Physics of Nicholas Copernicus University in Toruń and the City Council of Kcynia during 26 27 April 2003 in Toruń and Kcynia (26 April 2003, Saturday, in Toruń and 27 April 2003, Sunday, in Kcynia) in cooperation with the German Society for Crystal Growth. Kcynia is the birthplace of Prof. Czochralski. The scientific session in Toruń is organized at the University and includes all aspects of the Czochralski method used to grow semiconductors (silicon, III-V), oxides and fluorides single crystals. The results in the development of Czochralski method and properties of new crystals are being presented. In addition, the meeting is open to all aspects of growth and characterization of single crystals and thin films. Except for a limited number of invited lectures, most of the contributions are being presented as posters. The Symposium is widely open to everyone interested in the growth of crystalline materials. Professor Jan Czochralski is well known as a scientist, an investigator in materials science and the initiator of the commonly known Czochralski method used for the growth of materials important for application in opto- and micro-electronic devices. It is a great occasion to remember Czochralski as a scientist who spent his life in Germany and Poland. He was a professor at the Warsaw University of Technology. He expired on April 26, 1953 in Poznań and is buried in Kcynia. Professor Jan Czochralski is the patron of the Polish Society for Crystal Growth. We express our gratitude to all invited speakers and authors of contributed papers for their effort in the preparation and presentations lectures and posters. We are also grateful to all sponsors, who have invited and financed the stay of several young scientists and pupils from Kcynia school during the Symposium. We thank all members of the local Organizing Committee in Toruń and Kcynia, who spent much time and effort in the preparation of the Symposium.
