he Milsoft Core E&O: An Overview Stanley E. McHann, Jr. stan.mchann@milsoft.com Your Mission Our Vision 1 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Introduction to Milsoft A History of Outstanding Software and Support Since Wayne Carr first began using computers for electric utility planning and analysis some 35 years ago, he has maintained a passionate vision of software that can enable utilities to best serve their customers with economy and reliability. So, from its very beginning Milsoft has been driven to provide the very best in engineering and operations software and support to electric utilities. And the company will always aggressively leverage the best technologies to achieve this mission. Milsoft s vision is to provide you with the very best software and support to help you accomplish your mission. We know that you want to use software to get your work done and not have to struggle with interoperability and data management. We developed the Milsoft Core E&O system for this purpose: to allow your team to focus on its real work and not on getting your software and data to work together.!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Introduction To Core E&0 Core E&O Overview Each electric utility has a mission: to provide its customers with economical and reliable electric energy service. To help carry out this mission, utility employees use a variety of software applications. This creates challenges, because not all software applications are integrated or even have the ability to be interoperable. As a result, additional effort and time are required to communicate data between and among the applications. Milsoft s Core E&O system makes it possible for your teams to share information among third party and Milsoft applications to assist your engineering and operations teams in providing the best possible service to your customers. Here is a list of Milsoft s Core E&O system capabilities: Single point of data entry Data defined by staking projects becomes the entry point for new construction Engineering can enter and maintain equipment settings Dispatchers can update database fuse location and tap phasing corrections as per crew input If mobile input is possible, crews can submit database corrections All applications sharing the same data instead of data conversion between applications Each application and each user able to use individually desired version of the data Integrations to CIS, AVL, AMR/AMI, SCADA and etc made once and available to all Circuit Model can be shared As planned (or what if) As designed As energized As built The most difficult challenge for Milsoft in developing the Core E&O system is designing a system that allows each application and each client terminal to see and use a version of data or the circuit model that they require. For example, outage is best served by the As Energized version of the database, while mapping requires the As Built version. Engineering needs multiple database views (versions) such as All Projects Staked and/or All Projects Planned. 3 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Milsoft makes this possible with Core E&O s Project Management system. Each change to the database at any level of planning, construction, and completion is defined as a project that can be applied or unapplied to any view and application. A project can be updated as required while it moves through the utility work flow. When it is energized, the project can automatically update all outage clients, and mapping is not required to make it a permanent update to the database until after the final project edits have been completed and verified. The Milsoft Core E&O system ensures that the performance of the applications and data management is limited only by the capacity of the server and network infrastructure installed to support the Core E&O System. Your team, from one end of your operation to the other, can use the same software system, the same network model, and the same data. Cross team collaboration becomes reality. How Does Core E&O Work? There are three major components of Milsoft s Core E&O system: Circuit Model Server, Project Management, and our Integration Server. These Core E&O components work together along with our applications to provide the information that each team in a utility needs to do their daily tasks. Within Core E&O, all of Milsoft s software applications (shown below) share the detailed, as-built, as-energized electric utility distribution system network model and data through a circuit model server. share the detailed, asbuilt, as-energized electric utility distribution system network model and data through a circuit model server. Circuit Model Server Milsoft s Core E&O system incorporates the utility s actual electric distribution network through a circuit model server. The system includes project management tools for convenient data management. Third party applications data is made available to all applications and users via an integration server. The Circuit Model Server in Milsoft s Core E&O system allows you to share your electric power grid model with GIS, OMS, and our mobile applications seamlessly. OMS, for example, receives updates from Circuit Model Server, which allows for the Circuit Model to be used by OMS without having to go through any data translation or editing. Circuit Model Server also allows for OMS to use the model as OMS needs to without having temporary operations affect the core circuit model. 5 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Project Management Milsoft s Core E&O system is an information-driven system that incorporates the utility s electric distribution network through a circuit model server. The system includes project management tools for convenient data management. Third party applications data is made available to all applications and your team via an integration server. Management (PM) tools enable all users throughout the utility to create and use their own versions of the network and associated data as necessary for their job responsibilities. Example: Project Management is a key component of Milsoft s Core E&O system. There are several operational teams inside your utility that need to work on projects concurrently. From Field Engineering to Dispatch, simultaneous access to data is mission critical. Keeping track of who is working on what in the system is vital to all operational teams. The Core E&O system s project management capability ties together key operational functions within your utility. Engineering additions / modifications for system planning additions / modifications for design and construction of new facilities Operations configuration changes for potential or actual sectionalizing configuration changes to for post storm / disaster circumstances 6 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Mapping as planned as constructed as energized historical configurations archive You can conveniently update the master electric distribution system network model to be subject to your utility s business rules and processes for review and approval. Updates then are automatically incorporated for every application and data base through Core E&O s Circuit Model Server. 7 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Integration Server Data from third party applications (e.g., CIS, AMR, SCADA, AVL) is integrated and made available through an integration server, which includes the capability for industrystandard data exchange formats like MultiSpeak Open Platform API. An applications programming interface enables third party applications to seamlessly integrate directly into the Core E&O system. Data Bus All of the data from Milsoft s internal applications and from external third party applications is available to all users and applications based on user and application credentials. This is represented for convenience in the diagram as a single data bus. Milsoft s Core E&O system will, continue to add functionality to the data bus. 8 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Communications (IVR) Server Milsoft Communications (formerly known as Milsoft IVR) operates on a separate server which is integrated into the Core E&O system. 9 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Benefits of Core E&O Milsoft s Core E&O system makes it possible for your teams to share information among third party and Milsoft applications, which will assist your engineering and operations teams in providing the best possible service to your customers. Milsoft s Core E&O system allows the many different components of your engineering, mapping, and outage management systems to work seamlessly together. Using the Circuit Model Server, the Integration Server, and Project Management, you can easily interface Milsoft software and third party applications and authoritatively control your company s workflow model. The Circuit Model Server allows you to share you electric power grid model with GIS, OMS, and our mobile applications seamlessly, enabling OMS to use the model as required without having temporary operations affect the core circuit model. The Integration Server provides Milsoft data interfaces to third party applications, such as MultiSpeak, enabling Milsoft to lead the way with our approach to no-holds-barred integration. 10 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper

Project Management is a powerful tool that gives the various operational teams in your company simultaneous access to model data and enables you to keep track of who is working on what in the system, a vital function for everyone involved. The Core E&O system s project management capability ties together key operational functions within your utility. The Milsoft Core E&O system ensures that the performance of the applications and data management is limited only by the capacity of the server and network infrastructure installed to support the Core E&O system. Your team, from one end of your operation to the other, can use the same software system, the same network model, and the same data. Cross team collaboration is the goal. A Foundation for the Future Milsoft s Core E&O system is just the beginning! Milsoft has created a foundation for continuous improvement in the Core E&O system through regular releases that will enable your utility to meet the needs of your customers now, and for years to come. 11 Milsoft Core E&O White Paper
