Sault College VPN Access for MAC OS X Introduction This document will describe how to obtain, install and configure the Cisco VPN Client software for MAC OS X. The Cisco CVN Client software will enable your computer to connect to the Sault College network using a public Internet connection while off campus. While your computer is connected to the VPN, all the information you transfer between Sault College and your computer will be encrypted. Intended Audience Sault College students that wish to use the College network resources from a location off campus. If you only want to access your e-mail you do not need to install the VPN Client. Mail can be accessed from any web browser using the following URL https://mail.saultcollege.ca/student Downloading and Installing the Cisco VPN Client You will need to obtain and install the Cisco VPN client. It is available in the form of an OS X disk image file (dmg). There are two versions. The one you install depends on the version of OS X you are using. Downloading the VPN Client The Cisco VPN Client is available for download at: (this is being worked on) For OS X 10.4 and higher vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0030-universal-k9.dmg This universal Binary release for Mac OS X ONLY supports OS X 10.4 and above on both PPC and Intel processors. This version does NOT support Mac OS X 10.3.9 and lower. For OS X 10.3.9 or lower vpnclient-darwin-4.8.00.0490-gui-k9.dmg Use this client if your version of OS X is below 10.4 Copy the disk image to your desktop. installation process. Configuring the CISCO VPN Client Once the installation is complete, open the Cisco VPN Client. This program is located in the Applications menu (Shift-Command-A). You should see a window similar to the following: Click on New to create a new VPN connection entry. Enter the following information to set up the connection profile: Connection Entry: A name for this particular connection. ie. Sault College VPN Description: A brief description of the entry ie. Sault College Student VPN Host: The name of the VPN termination point, in this case access.saultcollege.ca or the IP address 192.197.90.20 On the Authentication Tab enter the Group VPN information. Ensure Group Authentication is selected. Name: The name of the group. You must use student in lower case letters Password: The password for the 'student' VPN group, use 'college' - all lowercase letters and no quotes. The completed entry form should look similar to the following: On the Transport tab ensure the following settings are enabled: Enable Transparent Tunneling Use IPSec over UDP (NAT/PAT) Leave Allow Local LAN Access unchecked, it wont work anyway because the College's VPN Concentrator doesn't allow you to use your home network at the same time as you are using the VPN. This is called split -tunneling and can cause some security problems if permitted. There is nothing needed in the Backup Servers Tab. You should now have an entry as follows in the VPN Client Connection Entries tab. Click the Connect icon to begin the connection to the Sault College VPN You will be prompted to enter your Sault College password. Enter your username (student number) and password when prompted. The VPN Client window should now show a status of Connected. To confirm that you are connected to the VPN choose the Statistics option from the Status pull down menu of the VPN Client. At this point you should be able to access all of the college resources that you normally would while on campus. You will not have direct access to the Internet from your home Internet Service Providor (ISP), Internet access will now be redirected through the Colege's ISP. When you are finished using the VPN, simply click the Disconnect icon on the VPN Client. The VPN Client will tear down the connection. Your remote/home Internet connection should be back to normal.
