Director's preface The report covers activities of the Danish Research Unit on Industrial Dynamics (DRUID) for the period January - December 2006. The main emphasis of the report is on presenting outcomes in terms of publications, PhD activities or communication and interaction with users, but a few additional points regarding the run of the year are worth mentioning. First, I am happy to note that DRUIDs international visibility and recognition have improved even further through 2006. The submissions from doctoral students to DRUID's annual Winter Conference has improved in numbers, quality and geographical reach. The same apply to an even greater extent for the Summer Conference that is now generally acknowledged as being one of the significant events in innovation research at least in Europe but possible beyond. This growth has come at a cost as it has stretched the internal resources close to breaking point. The process of selecting one out of three submissions that could be included in the final summer conference program has become more and more taxing as submissions keep multiply. To maintain the growth of submissions without compromising the quality of the selection process DRUID's International Scientific Advisory Board helped in setting up a corps of more than sixty qualified external reviewers who assisted DRUIDs in the double blind review process. It is too early to say if and how it will be possible to match a growth of paper submissions with and increase in the stock of willing and qualified reviewers but much effort is placed on signing up additional reviewers to replace the ones leaving and to add further strength to the group. The policy of gradually reducing the requirement for sponsorships by more efficient managerial procedures and other cutting cost measures has been quite successful. In particular, the investment made in developing an integrated conference website through 2006 has significantly reduced the secretarial support needed for launching our conferences. I aim to reach break even during the next couple of years so that conference fees and additional income sources match the cost of planning and running conferences. DRUID has benefited in many different ways from being an active part of the network DIME - Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe. DIME is working on the economic and social consequences of increasing globalization and the rise of the knowledge economy and consists of more than 200 scholars working at more than fifty universities and business schools throughout the European Union. DIME is sponsored by the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union and was a co-organizer of both our conferences in 2006. DRUID continued the tradition of participating with doctoral students and senior scholars to CCC doctoral colloquium, which in 2006 for the first time was organized outside the US by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Previous Colloquia have taken place at Carnegie Mellon, Wharton, MIT, Michigan, Harvard, NYU, Northwestern, Duke, Boston University, the University of Toronto, Emory University, and the University of California (Berkeley). Many of the previous years student presenters now are faculty members at leading schools of management around the world and DRUID is pleased to have been invited into this prestigious group. 3

The year 2006 was also significant in a negative sense as we experienced our first case of outright plagiarism. Colleagues from Harvard Business School alerted me that a paper accepted for the Summer Conference was an excerpt from a paper coauthored with scholars from Wharton and Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Nederlands. The investigation that followed showed that besides changing the title and a few words here and there the submitted paper was indeed an almost wordto-word copy of parts of the original paper. The case was brought before the offender's HoD, who within a fortnight had completed the necessary consultations that resulted in the immediate dismissal and discontinuation of the employment contract. DRUID is very pleased with the prompt action against this violation of the basic principles of academic life. I am presently considering steps to help safeguard DRUID against future incidents of this kind. Finally, 2006 signaled a much appreciated intensification of the already strong ties with the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation as members of DRUID was engaged in various advisory or consultative activities with the Department as well as with the Ministry's Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation - in particular its RTI and Centre for Innovation, and with "Højteknologifonden". These mutual beneficial interactions are planned to be continued and deepened in the years to come. Further details of previous and subsequent activities within DRUID are available through our website: www.druid.dk. Peter Maskell Professor, MSc, Ph.D. Dr.Merc. Director of DRUID 4

Introduction: Coverage of the report defining DRUID participant The core of the report presents an overview of activities and outputs covering DRUID participants. They are divided into two groups: DRUID staff and DRUID PhD students. In order to define who belongs to each of these groups we have used the following criteria: Those who are included as staff fulfils all the four criteria: 1. They have confirmed that they still regard themselves as druid participants 2. They have agreed to submit at least one working paper to the DRUID Working Paper Series this year and at least on within the next two years. 3. They have participated in the DRUID conferences or have helped organizing these. 4. They have agreed to contribute to the realisation of the DRUID research programme. Those who are included as PhD students fulfil all the following five criteria: 1. They have/have had a tutor among those registered as DRUID staff. 2. They have confirmed that they still regard themselves as druid participants 3. They have confirmed that their PhD thesis can be found on the DRUID homepage either by a direct link or by a pdf-file. 4. They have participated in the DRUID winter conferences. 5. They have worked on issues that fall within the DRUID research programme Some participants in DRUID have moved from the category PhD students to becoming staff. They will appear in the staff category but they will also appear in the schematic presentation of PhD students in the section on PhD Activities. Visiting scholars belonging to the DRUID network and publishing some of their work in the DRUID Working Paper series have not been included among the DRUID participants. Their contributions to the programme will be reflected exclusively through the list of working papers in appendix 1. With these definitions there are 28 persons registered as staff, whose activities are reflected in the report, and 16 PhD students have in 2006 been connected to the research programme. Over the whole period 1995-2006 no less than 47 PhD students have been active in DRUID; of these 31 have successfully defended their theses so far. SECTION I: Publications Introduction In what follows the written output from DRUID is presented under the following headings: a. Articles in refereed journals b. Articles in refereed books c. Refereed books d. Papers, working papers and research reports An attempt has been made to make sure that the same article or book only appears once as a refereed contribution. This also means that all contributions with several authors have been listed under one author only. In table 1, the number of refereed contributions has been given for years 1997-2006. Table 1: Number of refereed publications from DRUID-participants 1997-2006 Articles in refereed journals Articles in referred books 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 12 15 29 14 20 43 38 35 27 22 17 14 26 22 24 13 30 36 6 29 Refereed books 1 4 0 4 7 6 13 9 7 4 The fall in quantity in recent years has taken place in parallel with a rise in quality of the journals selected. At the same time, some publications by DRUIDs have attracted an increasing number of readers and citations as shown in table 2. 8

The search process was carried out in four steps: Step 1: the cited author was identified by surname and first initial. A search for all years was selected. Step 2: all potentially relevant journal titles were selected and obviously irrelevant ones (journals about early childhood education etcetera) were disregarded. Step 3: each article on the list found by the search was clicked on, as was the cited reference link for the article. The number of citations for the author in question could then be read. Step 4: the numbers of citations for each year were recorded while disregarding citations by the author himself/herself. Please note that the procedure does not catch citations of books or of papers in journals not in SSCI if the individual DRUID is not first author of co-authored papers. Searches for DAVIS L and JOHNSON B generate so many results that only the first 500 results are shown in the ISI database. As these first 500 results only cover articles written by authors whose names start with letters from the beginning of the alphabet, they do not give an accurate indication of the number of citations of Lee Davis and Bjørn Johnson s work. 9

SECTION II: PhD Actitivities DRUID was initially established without funds for PhDs. However, during the run of the DRUID program an increasing number of PhD students have participated in the activities and greatly benefited from close interaction with senior scholars from the international network. The DRUID network, which was accepted by the Social Science Research Council (SSF) in December 2000, had PhD training as an explicit task of high priority. The PhD activities were anchored in a permanent institution called the DRUID ACADEMY, rather than in a temporary network. The DRUID ACADEMY is a long-term co-operation agreement between the two major departments of DRUID Department of Business Studies at Aalborg University and Department of Industrial Economics and Strategy at CBS in co-operation also with Southern Danish University and Aarhus School of Business. The intention of the DRUID ACADEMY is to create synergy and critical mass for PhD students participating in the activities of DRUID. A domestic course program has now run for several years with increasing number of foreign students. The annual DRUID Winter conferences have focused at international PhD participation especially from January 2000 and now attract more than 100 submissions mainly from Europe but also from the Americas, the Far East, and the Antipodes. The DRUID ACADEMY is plugged into an international network, the European Doctoral School on Economic, Technological and Institutional Change EDS-ETIC, which can be dated back to 1993. Through two substantial 3 years EU grants (1996-98 and 1999-2001) from the EU Framework program Training and Mobility of Researchers (Action 4), DRUID has through the Aalborg section been part of the core group organizing PhD courses/seminars at the European level in Maastricht and Strasbourg. These activities (the ETIC PhD courses) have been scheduled as four weeks annually. Two of these weeks have been co-coordinated by DRUID members since their beginning (Esben Sloth Andersen and Bent Dalum, Aalborg University). In 2001 these institutions extended their network and ambition towards creating EDS-ETIC as a European doctoral school and the DRUID Academy is representing the Danish participation. EDS-ETIC was recognized as a Marie Curie Training site for doctoral students. EDS-ETIC is closely connected to the Summer School program in industrial economics, ESSID, organized as one week annually at Corsica. DRUID invited to send selected PhD students to participate in the annual activities of the CCC consortium of major US PhD programs in the field of the economics of technical change, headed by Prof. R. Nelson, Columbia, and D. Movery at Stanford. Intensified co-operation between the European and US networks, involving the DRUID ACADEMY as a central node, has materialized over the years. In 2006 4 PhD students who participated in the DRUID network have finalized their PhD studies by successfully defending their theses. At present there are close to 20 local and non-lokal PhD students connected to the network. An important element in the DRUID PhD training is the active participation of students in the annual DRUID Winter Conference where PhD students are expected to present work in progress and in the annual DRUID Summer Conference where they also are expected to present papers and 18

act as discussants on papers by international scholars. The PhD students related to DRUID have been active in all these respects.
