5 Aalborg University Aalborg University was founded in 1974 and has since then developed into a young, international network university with divisions in Aalborg, Esbjerg and Copenhagen and with special focus on problem-based learning, interdisciplinarity and research-based innovation. The university has four faculties: the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences, The Faculty of Engineering and Science and the Faculty of Medicine. Furthermore the university includes the Danish Building Research Institute (SBi). In 2012 the university had more than 18,000 students, 2,400 external research projects and a turnover of DKK 2.3 billion. The European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) Aalborg University is the only Danish university that is a member of the ECIU and, therefore, works hard to ensure an innovative university culture by: developing and implementing new learning and research methods. Experimenting with new management techniques. Fostering an internationally oriented staff. Offering quality education with a European perspective. The universities within the ECIU are characterised by a strong sense of entrepreneurship and have close contact with industry and regional institutions. Facts Aalborg University 5

7 Historical overview 1974 Aalborg University Centre (AUC) is launched. About 2,000 students enrol First international co-operative agreement is contracted with the University of Wisconsin, USA AUC obtains status as a research-based institution Inauguration of the NOVI Research Park Change of name to Aalborg University (AAU) Aalborg University opens a division in Esbjerg in connection with a merger with Esbjerg Engineering College Aalborg University is accepted into the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) Aalborg University opens a division in Copenhagen Merger with the Danish Building Research Institute (SBi) The undergraduate programme in Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine are established the university launches a new campus in Sydhavnen in Copenhagen located near the city centre. 8 Education The PBL Aalborg model The study programmes are characterised by problem-based group work centred on authentic projects, often solved in cooperation with the business world. This provides graduates with unique competences in teamwork and in working analytically and result-oriented competences highly valued by employers. International study environments The university gives priority to creating international study environments, for which reason English is the study language of a number of programmes. Many foreign students are also enrolled at the university, and many Danish students spend a semester abroad during their education. High completion rate Aalborg University stands out within the sector with a low dropout rate and a record low completion time of 5.0 years for students, who complete both a bachelor and a master s programme. 8 Facts Aalborg University

10 Research Aalborg University conducts research in the following areas: The Humanities Social sciences Science of engineering Natural science Medical science The university has 4 doctoral schools, one in each faculty. The goal of the doctoral schools is to provide PhD students with a high international academic level. Quality assessment of research The quality of the research conducted at Aalborg University is assessed via internationally renowned researchers with credit evaluations, peer review of research articles and contributions to international conferences. The university benchmarks its research production in the Danish universities shared research publication platform PURE as well as internationally with regard to specific research areas. 13 Research cooperation Aalborg University is the country s leading university with regard to knowledge transfer between the university and the business world. The university s cooperation with the surrounding world takes many forms, from expert advice, industrial PhDs, professional networks and laboratory access to more binding cooperation on research and development. Development in research projects Within the last 3 years the university has experienced a 36 % increase in earnings from the university s cooperation with external partners, corresponding to DKK 120 million. In 2012 these earnings amounted to 20 % of the university s total income. 14 International research The internationalisation of research Aalborg University is among the world s leading universities in research in health technology, wireless communication, energy, computer science, innovation economics and comparative welfare studies. Furthermore, the university has established centres in telecommunications at the Birla Institute of Technology in India, at the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia and at the University of Rome, and the university has established a research centre in health technology at the Xi an Jiaotong University in China. An international workplace Aalborg University is an internationally oriented workplace that attracts researchers from around the world. The university has a high percentage of foreign researchers and sees it as a goal to maintain an international research environment. 17 Achievements 2012 From Aalborg University experienced growth in most academic key figures while simultaneously realising a significant deficit: the intake of new students increased by 23 %, corresponding to more than 5,700 new students. Securing a record high intake for the 4th year in a row. For the first time ever the university enrolled more graduate students from outside the university than from within its own undergraduate programmes. While for the first time since 2008 more graduate students than undergraduate students earned their degree. the intake of Phd students increased by 15 % and the number of students awarded the PhD degree increased by 21 %. the university s growth is also reflected in an increase in external research funds, number of publications as well as BFI points. in 2012 Aalborg University had a turnover of almost DKK 2.3 billion and a deficit of DKK million related to campus investments in Aalborg and Copenhagen as well as an increase in level of activity within the areas of research and education.
