(Porter 1998a, p. 226) Center for Strategisk Byforskning er etableret som et tværfagligt center under Realdania Forskning. Formålet med centret er at forbedre grundlaget for helhedsorienterede beslutninger om byers udvikling. 8 Architectural clustering KNOWLEDGE clustering Aarhus School of Architecture The school works as the centrifugal center of the cluster. Both geographically as seen on the earlier map and mentally. Earlier students have spread out but their professional network is still build around the network from the school. The school supports a network called: Kandidatkontakten

Møller - architect and principal Johan Richter - architect and professor Arne Karlsen - architect and assistant professor Sven Hansen - architect and assistant professor Short historical presentation: The photo shows the first teachers at the school bask in already in the 1920 s the danish architect Kay Fisker spoke of a architectschool in Jutland in relation to the new university. - In the 1950 s the growing welth of several provincecities in Jutland brought about the same wish. - In 1962 A group was formed in order to convince the danish government to found an architectschool in Jutland. Actually at first it was an artschool...the architect C. F. Møller was highly active in this group and became the first principal of the school. - In 1965 the school opened in Aarhus on its current adress, Nørreport 20. At its opening the school had 52 students - today it has 900.

11 Architect offices in Århus Arkitema annual turnover: mio dkr. 162 number of employees: 255 INFO: Arkitema was founded in 1970 (then Arkitektgruppen i Århus) by the architects Helge Tindahl, Lars Due, Ole Nielsson Michael Harrebek and Erling Stadager. All educated from Aarhus School of architecture. Today all are still partners in Arkitema, but in addition 6 more partners has entered the company. The company has offices in Aarhus, Copenhagen and Beijing. The company is among many projects known for: - HK and KL administration (Copenhagen 2002) - Danish Crown (Horsens 2004) - Sluseholmen (Copenhagen 2004)

12 Architect offices in Århus C. F. Møller annual turnover: mio dkr. 190 number of employees: 240 INFO: C. F. Møller was founded in 1924 by the architect C F Møller. Educated from The Royal Academi of Fine Arts, Copenhagen. Today Møllers son, Mads Møller i active in the company but in addition 7 new partners have entered the company. The company has offices in Aarhus, Copenhagen, Vejle, Aalborg, Oslo, London and Stockholm. The company is among many projects known for: - The University of Aarhus (Aarhus 1931) - Sandbakken (Aarhus 1990) - Darwin Centre Phase Two (London 2001)

13 Architect offices in Århus Schmidt, Hammer & Lassen annual turnover: mio dkr. 75 number of employees: 126 INFO: SHL was founded in 1986 by the architects Morten Schmidt, Bjarne Hammer and John Lassen. All educated from Aarhus School of architecture. Today all are still partners in SHL, but in addition three more partners has entered the company. The company has offices in Aarhus, Copenhagen, Oslo and London. The company is among many projects known for: - The Royal Liberary in Copenhagen (1999) - Aros - Aarhus artmuseum (Århus 2001) - Halmstad Library (Halmstad 2004)

14 Architect offices in Århus 3xN annual turnover: mio dkr. 97 number of employees: 98 INFO: 3xN was founded in 1986 by the architects Hans Peter Svendler Nielsen, Kim Herforth Nielsen and Lars Frank Nielsen. All educated from Aarhus School of architecture. Today Kim Herforth Nielsen is the only one of the original partners left. Two new partners have joined the company - Kim Christiansen and Bo Boje Larsen. The company has offices in Aarhus and Copenhagen The company is among many projects known for: - Museum of Liverpool (Liverpool ) - Music Building by the IJ (Amsterdam 2005) - Light*house (Århus )

All educated from Aarhus School of architecture. Today Lars Bendrup is the sole owner of the company. Have worked for CF Møller. Aesthetic / ethical approaches Scandinavian modernism / global pragmatism All of the young architects are educated from Aarhus School of Architecture Almost all of them have prior to starting their own company worked for one of the old companies.
