Reducing Energy Consumption Lighting represents one of the largest operating costs in a refrigerated environment; second only to refrigeration. Advancements in lighting technology for colder environments provide a means to reduce energy consumption up to 5% providing a simple payback in as little as two years. Fluorescent technology offers more efficient lighting systems for ambient environments down to -2 F (-29 C). Fluorescent lighting system upgrades provide longer useful illumination, control capability, and better quality of light than traditional lighting systems for cold and refrigerated environments. 5 4 3 2 Energy Savings Comparison in F (-8 C) Environment 455 29 The Metalux Arctic Bay can reduce energy usage over 5% in freezer applications down to -2 F (-29 C). kwh $.6 $.8 $. $.2 (based on 4 hrs.) 4 Watt AB-454T5 $56.6 $74.88 $93.6 $2.32 Annual Energy Savings Thermal Performance Cooper Lighting thermally tested each configuration to determine the optimal luminaire operating temperature range. When specifying luminaires use the lowest temperature the luminaire will be exposed to during operating hours. However, facility temperatures fluctuate and luminaires exposed to temperatures less than stated are not recommended. Freezer Temperature Ranges To maximize energy efficiency, some facilities will operate chillers only during offpeak hours. in this case the facility will chill the space -4 F (-4 C) to maintain 4 ft. 35 ft. @ -4 F (-4 C) the targeted temperature during operating hours. Fluorescent luminaires exposed 3 ft. to -4 F (-4 C) temperatures are not recommended. Energy efficient HID sources may be a better alternative. 2 ft. 2 ft. @ -2 F (-29 C) ft. ft. @ - F (-23 C) Reduced Heat Contribution Lighting systems are a source of heat. Reducing the heat contribution of a lighting system will lower the cooling costs of the facilities refrigeration system. The ASHRAE Handbook provides allowance factors to calculate the heat gain from different light sources. HID source factors are more than 2% higher than linear fluorescent. However, actual savings are dependent on the lighting system and building configuration. Computer simulation tools are available (supplied by others) to assist in making an estimation. Cooper Lighting s 3 lamp T8 VT3 maintains 97% of light output in -5 F environments. The VT3 is an ideal solution for lower mounting height freezer applications. 3

Lower Maintenance Costs As a total system solution, T5 and T8 fluorescent systems provide more light output over their rated life up to twice as long as HID or outdated T2 fluorescent systems. Cooper Lighting s fluorescent systems feature multiple lamps, so if a lamp burns out, the others stay lit. Fluorescent lighting systems with extended rated lamp life and multiple lamp configurations offer a safe operating environment and an opportunity to dramatically reduce maintenance expenditures. Lamp Life & Lumen Maintenance LIGHT OUTPUT 4 Watt High Bay T5 HO 6-Lamp T8 HO Ballast 6-Lamp T5 HO 4-Lamp End of Lamp Life The Metalux F-Bay can reduce maintenance intervals by up to 5%. Initial 5 5 2 25 3 35 HOURS Controlling Energy Consumption Fluorescent systems offer instant on/off capabilities that, when utilized with occupancy controls, can help to reduce energy consumption. Colder ambient environments can affect warm up and restrike times. Refer to Cooper Lighting s control recommendations throughout the product selection guide to optimize fixture performance. The Micro-Bay can provide up to 75% energy savings over traditional HID systems when used with occupancy sensors. Quality of Visible Light Our eyes use both rods and cones to see light. The rods are more sensitive to blue light (scotopic vision) and cones to yellow light (photopic vision). A traditional light meter measures only photopic lumens, which are the stated lumens referenced in lamp catalogs. The S/P Ratio acts as an adjustment to the existing photopic measurement by multiplying the standard lumens of a source with the S/P ratio or a factor thereof to replicate how our eyes perceive brightness. As a result, an environment illuminated with warmer light sources, such as high pressure sodium, may appear darker than an environment illuminated with cooler light sources, like high CCT fluorescent lamps. LUMEN OUTPUT 5 25 S/P Comparison of Fluorescent vs. HID 77 F (25 C) Initial System Lumens S/P Adjusted Initial Lumens While an increasing number of lighting designers are endorsing the use of S/P ratios, this has not yet been endorsed by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). Cooper Lighting provides S/P adjusted lumen values throughout the product specification sections as reference information only and maintains no formal position on its application. Always test proposed products to validate results to your expectations. 6L 54W T5HO 4W 4

Environmentally Friendly Cooper Lighting fluorescent luminaires are environmentally friendly. Housings and reflector assemblies are manufactured of recyclable steel and aluminum substrates. Corrugated packaging is both recyclable and optimized in design to reduce waste on the job site. The use of low mercury fluorescent lamps also offers an attractive alternative to HID systems. Low mercury T5HO fluorescent lamps can contain as little as.4 Mg of mercury compared with up to 7 Mg for a 4 watt metal halide lamp. Energy efficient lighting upgrades can decrease facilities carbon footprint, since less fossil fuels are used to support savings achieved by the system upgrade. 5

Cold Storage Distribution Facility, California When a California cold storage facility wanted to reduce their energy consumption they turned to a local contractor for advice on a lighting system upgrade. With an installed lighting system of over () 4W high pressure sodium high bays, the contractor selected Cooper Lighting s T5HO Arctic bay. T5 is reliable in very cold conditions, still provides quality light and allows cold storage facilities to save valuable energy without compromising their ability to see, states the installing contractor. The 6 lamp T5HO Arctic Bay with occupancy sensors provided 45% energy savings. Since the occupancy sensors rotate between the 4 and 2 lamps, it helps maximize lamp life reducing maintenance costs. The fluorescent system also has higher 85 CRI compared to high pressure sodium s 22 CRI which provided the appearance of significantly more light although the footcandles are roughly the same, recounts the contractor. In addition to the energy savings, the facility was able to take advantage of the local utility s rebate program sweetening the overall payback less than one year months. Before: () 4W 464 Input Watts Per 42,398 kwh After: () 6L 54W T5HO Arctic Bay 35 Input Watts Per (234 4L, 7 2L) Rotating Occupancy Sensors 63,286 kwh The reaction has been very positive, workers love the light and ownership values the savings. Energy efficient lighting system upgrade reduces energy consumption 45% providing an month payback.
