2 ALFA LIGHTIN CABLE SYSTEM INSTALLATION TIPS The ALFA LIGHTING cable system is one of the most versatile lighting systems available today. It offers a unique degree of flexibility, not possible with other types of lighting systems. The cables can be installed in a variety of ways including; wall to wall, along a ceiling and even up a wall vertically. By having this flexibility you can place the lighting exactly where you need to, without compromise. The installation of your ALFA LIGHTING cable system, if done following these simple guidelines, will provide years of safe and effective illumination. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE BEGINNING INSTALLATION. PREPARATION 1. Unpack all parts and identify them. 2. Turn off power at the breaker panel or remove fuses from panel. 3. Before installing your system please note the following: A. Do not install any of the cable fixtures within four inches of any combustible materials. B. Do not install the cable system in a wet or damp location. C. Use only those bulbs and maximum wattage specified for each of the cable fixtures. TRANSFORMER INSTALLATION 1, Select one of the following methods in which to mount your transformer. A. It can be ceiling mounted to an existing lighting fixture junction box. B. It can be mounted with a power cord attached to allow for plugging into a wall outlet. C. It can be remote mounted within a well vented area. (Note: Be sure to route the wires carefully.) If the transformer is remote mounted the length of the secondary wire must be added to the total length of the cable. This combined length should not exceed 28 feet for no. 10 gauge cable, or exceed 20 feet for no. 12 gauge cable. 2, Using the following chart determine the maximum length of secondary wire from your transformer to your power feed, based on gauge of that secondary wire and anticipated maximum load. NOTE: Secondary cable must be: rated by an acceptable THHN type copper-based stranded wire, have a temperature rating of 105 degrees C and 600 volts rating. Max. Mount all of the hardware to the appropriate anchoring surfaces. Please note that the system depends on good anchoring to keep the cables tight and level. It is recommended to secure the cable hardware into a wood stud or to use appropriate mounting hardware based on your anchoring surface. During the rough-in stage of construction, if possible wood blocking should be placed either behind the wall or in the ceiling for anchoring purposes. Depending on the number and weight of the fixtures on the cable, unsupported runs up to 20 feet can be achieved. If a longer run is desired, we recommend using a cable support in the middle of the run Attach one end of the cable to the mounting hardware. (Note: If there is not a turnbuckle at both ends, mount first that end of the cable which is not held by a turnbuckle.) String the cable through any other pieces of hardware and pull it to the end turnbuckle.

With the cable at the final turnbuckle, trim the cable to the appropriate length, leaving yourself approximately 3-4" of excess by which you can hand tighten the cable. Run the cable into the turnbuckle and out the hole in the side of the shaft. Tighten all of the connections and trim off the remaining excess cable. 4. Finally rotate the turnbuckles, tightening the cables until they are level. Visually level is all that is required. If the run is too long and sagging, consider adding a center support. Note that all supports/cross connectors are required to be installed prior to stringing the cable. One must pass through these units on the way to the turnbuckles. BULB INSTALLATION 1. Insert the specified bulb into your fixture prior to installing the fixture on the cable system. 2. Use only those lamps specified for use in each individual fixture. For certain types of applications, it is recommended that a protective lens cover should be used. Alfa Lighting will not accept any "liability for injury or damage" caused by the incorrect use of the bulbs or failure to use the correct equipment. 3. Halogen bulbs are usually whiter, brighter, more efficient and longer lasting than conventional incandescent bulbs. To further extend their life, operate them at a slightly dimmed level when possible. However, be sure to occasionally bring the light up to full brightness to complete the halogen process. 4. Please note that a new halogen bulb may smoke when you first install it. This phenomenon is normal and is a result of the bulb's protective coating being vaporized. 5. When installing or replacing the bulbs, first be sure that the bulb has fully cooled down. Do not touch the quartz bulb or in MR11 and MR16 bulbs the inside mirrored reflector with your bare hands. If you happen to touch the bulb or reflector, be sure to clean them with a lint-free cloth moistened with methylated spirit. FIXTURE INSTALLATION 1. Refer to the appropriate section of the installation guide for individual fixture assemblies. 2. In general, each fixture requires an electrical connection with each of the cables. Each fixture typically has a cross bar which spans between each of the cables. Remove the screws from either end of the cross bar arms and feed the cable through the contact. Re-thread each of the screws into the contacts, pinching the cable and making the electrical connection. Make sure to hand tighten all connections as much as possible. NOTE: Always have the power to your system shut off when adding or removing fixtures from the cables. POWERING THE SYSTEM 1. Refer to the following pages for different powering configurations. Make sure that the point of connection to the system is installed properly. This particular connection is the most important in the system. Once all of the fixtures are installed and you have done a preliminary check on the system, replace the fuses in the panel or turn back on power at the breaker panel. 2. Recheck the system while it is operating. Verify that each of the connections is tight and is making a good electrical connection. Good electrical connections avoid any possible arcing or system overheating. TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Check to make sure the power is on. If using a plug in transformer, make sure the chord is plugged in to an outlet. 2. Check the breaker on the main panel. Reset if necessary. 3. Check for a loose connection inside either the transformer or the junction box or canopy cover. 4. Using a volt meter, make sure there is power within the connection. 5. Check the tightness of each of the connections, including at the fixture. 6. If the breaker at the main panel keeps shutting off, you may have a short on the 120 volt side of your transformer. 7. If the breaker is still tripping, check inside the transformer housing and make sure all connections are wired correctly. 8. Remove all fixtures and re-install one fixture at a time to check for a short associated with a particular fixture. 3

( Typical of most cable fixture ) MR 16 LAMP INSTALLATION 1. Remove and insert fitting onto cable, tighten thumb screw to secure. 2. Release small screw using only screwdriver which is small enough to fit. Oversize screw driver may cause crack to ceramic socket. 3. Insert MR-16 lamp to socket and tighten all screws to prevent overheating. CAUTION MAKE SURE ALL POWER CONNECTIONS ARE TIGHT To confirm connections are sufficiently tight: 1. Turn on power. 2. After twenty minutes, touch each connection. 3. Tighten any connections that are hot.

THREAD THE TURNBUCKLES INTO THE OPEN POSITION AND THEN ATTACH THE CABLE AT ONE END. RUN THE CABLE THROUGH ALL RE- ROUTING DEVICES AND THEN WHILE HAND TIGHTENING THE SYSTEM AT THE FAR END, TIGHTEN THE SET SCREW. REPEAT WITH THE SECOND CABLE. 6
