4 Qualifications/Experience 4.1 Mandatory Registered Nurse with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and / or Registered Midwife with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) 4.2 Desirable Currently competent in Basic Life Support. 5 Key Selection Criteria 5.1 Key competencies 5.1.1 Nurses registered to practice with AHPRA. With reference to the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (ANMC, 2006a), demonstrate: Professional Practice Critical Thinking and Analysis Provision and Coordination of Care Collaborative and Therapeutic Practice 5.1.2 Midwives registered to practice with AHPRAH. Adheres to LRH policies and protocols and relevant legislation for clinical practice eg Drug administration, Privacy Act, Consent, Infection Control 7.2 Conducts nursing / midwifery practice in a way that can be ethically justified. Practises in accordance with the profession's code of ethics Ensures confidentiality of all information and interactions during various modes of communication Encourages the implementation of the Public Hospital Charter 7.3 Protects the rights of individuals and groups in relation to health care. Involves the patient in all aspects of care, eg orientation, discharge planning and ongoing treatment Utilises resources in providing holistic care related to spirituality, cultural and gender differences/preferences Provides relevant LRH / generic pamphlets/information brochures for pre / post operative procedures or treatments 7.4 Accepts accountability and responsibility for own actions within nursing / midwifery practice. Recognises own knowledge base/scope of practice Consults with an experienced Registered Nurse / Midwife when nursing / midwifery care requires expertise beyond own scope of competence Refers to other health care professionals when individual/group needs fall outside the scope of nursing / midwifery practice Consults unit based resource manuals prior to procedures, eg Radiology. Demonstrates economical restraint with utilisation of hospital resources 7.5 Acts to enhance the professional development of self and others. Completes assessment requirements and attends compulsory study days of the graduate nurse / graduate midwifery program. Attends mandatory training annually or as specified by Nurse Unit Manager and in Development Plan, eg Basic life support, Epidural, No Lift Attends education relevant to clinical environment and professional interest Liaises with Graduate Nurse and Midwifery Program Coordinator and Preceptors to give and obtain feedback on progress Reflects on clinical practice and identifies areas for improvement. Responds appropriately to feedback provided re clinical practice 7.6 Values research in contributing to developments in nursing / midwifery and improved standards of care. Utilises LRH resources, eg intranet, Internet, library, to access information relevant/required for clinical care Participates in LRH research projects/quality activities
7.7 Carries out a comprehensive and accurate nursing / midwifery assessment of individuals and groups in a variety of settings. Completes admission assessment on every new patient within 24 hours and identifies persons at risk Carries out a patient assessment at the beginning of every shift and/or after any clinical change and prioritises care accordingly Involves other team members as clinically indicated 7.8 Formulates a plan of care in collaboration with individuals and groups. Individualises and documents nursing / midwifery care of patients to facilitate optimal health, pain relief, rehabilitation or a dignified death. 7.9 Implements planned nursing / midwifery care to achieve identified outcomes within scope of competency. Effectively manages all nursing / midwifery care of allocated patients in a timely manner All documentation to co-ordinate continuity of care is up to date and complete, eg, Care Tracks, Nursing Care Plan, Wound Chart, Preoperative Checklist Provides education regarding prevention of complications 7.10 Evaluates progress toward expected outcomes and reviews and revises plans in accordance with evaluation data. Reviews discharge plan daily and revises according to patients clinical progress Discharge planning and community services arranged are discussed with patients and carers prior to discharge Evaluates current Nursing Care Plan and modifies following individual patient assessments 7.11 Contributes to the maintenance of an environment, which promotes safety, security and personal integrity of individuals and groups. Provides for the comfort and safety needs of individuals and groups at all times Provides a therapeutic and effective relationship with other nursing / midwifery staff, individual patients, and their families Maintains the dignity and integrity of individuals and groups at all times 7.12 Communicates effectively with individuals and groups. Is able to provide a concise and accurate handover of all patient care Communicates directly with medical officers, allied health staff and Associate Unit Manager regarding patient care 7.13 Manages effectively the nursing / midwifery care of individuals and groups. Organises workload to complete planned nursing / midwifery care for individuals patients Responds effectively in unexpected or rapidly changing situations and utilises MET/codes appropriately
7.14 Collaborates with other members of the health care team. Develops collaborative relationships with all disciplines of the health care team Includes other members of the health care team and the patient in decision making regarding clinical care.
